@Jade - That's Jaer's fic  A Soldier's Weakness

Yeah!  That's it!
'cause we she and I talked a bit about how Kaidan seems to have grown a bit in ME2 (from the little that we've seen) and how Shepard has to deal with the fact that he's not her subordinate any more and how Shepard need to start thinking about him and treating him like and equal.

EDIT:  photo time
I still just love how happy and in-love he looks at this point in the scene:

I'm exploring Kaidan's childhood in my current fic and I'm curious about any perspectives others might have on what his childhood would have been like. I figure he was in his early teens 13-14 when he was taken for BAaT so that leaves a lot of the younger years open.

His father retired before the First Contact War, so it seems likely he was raised for the most part in Canada, eh?

Getting caught up - oh, I hate that i'm in different time zones from so many of you, but ah well...

:( freeway, i think you have a good point and you put it very well. if the topic is kaidan, it's on topic, and if people don't like the topic, they can lurk. i think it *is* fair to note, though, that garrus comes up a lot and that does bother some. sometimes the discussion becomes more garrus than kaidan. also, i think the game almost deliberately rubs your face in garrus' loyalty vs. kaidan's leaving. i think it makes sense that each character does what they do: i love garrus, but his vigilante ways concerned me always. i prefer kaidan's more rule-following charm. BUT that's a personal thing. still, i think some people are a little sore over how the game let you save one guy and then romance him, let you save the other and he yells at you.

also, i think the fact that garrus scores so high in popularity sometimes annoys folks here. it's like you wish him well and all, but if the devs listen to popularity polls, they might ignore kaidan for garrus? just thinkin' out loud here.

 Citadel Doctor/Lilith: i find neither threatening and i don't think kaidan had sex with either. "i'd finally let my friends convince me to go out for drinks with a doctor on the citadel. nothing serious, just letting myself have a life again, you know?" key words: finally, let, convince, drinks, nothing-serious (okay, 2 words there), letting myself, life again. To me, NOT the words of a man who chose the date, had more than 1 date, wanted the date, or even thought of it AS a date. i do not see "i don't have sex casually" kaidan doing anything here. it certainly would throw shep for a loop, but i don't see it as meaning anything other than.... well, working on that chapter.  and lilith? nothing. the guy doesn't ask about her after the attack, doesn't mention her in the email. doesn't say "oh, hey, get my buddy lilith back." he scarcely even looks at her as the attack comes in. maybe she liked him, but *shrug* i played a maleshep first and she acts the same way to ash. totally didn't see anything there.

 biotics? always. i LOVE biotics. it's like jedi powers, but without all the inherent narrative problems of the force (because really, the force can do ANYTHING and that sort of makes it hard to limit it, you know? gets to be the "fix all" anyhow...) biotics are hot. and being the only other biotic on the ship...well, it just makes sense for a bond to form. i loved playing with the idea of biotics in my little pointy head...

morning all!

Been reading a lot of fanfics and i noticed that quite a few of the writers have a femshep who is biotic and can relate to Kaidan more because of it.

So it got me thinking how you guys prefer to do the romance and what backgrounds and classes do you choose to play with. And do you think it effects how you see/feel about the romance.

Completely missed this part...

Hmm, I like the silent and deadly classes - so rogues, Snipers, Infiltrators...  (Biotics/ Mages coming next... though I prefer the healer).
I actually did like the idea of my Shep and Kaidan having a different way to relate to each other than biotics - tech. Not that I have the slightest clue about tech in rl... but maybe that is why it is so tempting. Also, it was always mentioned that he was such a powerful biotic and having my Shepard compete against that... was difficult for me to get along with.

Anyway, I think that both ways really work well - having the same class to relate to the other, or having similar abilities to talk about and sometimes it is a lot of fun to have complete opposites - giving them a chance to get to know each other, to work on possible prejudices and fears.

When it comes to backgrounds - I like traumatic events. It may sound a bit sadistic... but that's just how it is. I am a very emotional person and traumatic events usually play well with that. Loss and fear or even something that will make the character complertely irrational... it offers so much potential for my mind to play with.
Now I have no idea if I even answered that or was babbling again... but so be it.
As for ME - Sayen Shepard is Spacer + Akuze Survivor + Infiltrator

Oh, and forgive me but  I couldn't help but laugh when I read "How do you like to do the romance..." Hurray for smut and gutter thoughts...

I figured he was raised in Canada.  Somehow, I suspected that his father might have been older and his mother might have been younger, but I don't know why.  Apparently, he was going to school normal-like when he got picked up by Conatix.

... uh?  I don't know much else to add.

I agree with FireEye. With his father having retired before the First Contact War, that means he was retired when he and his wife had little kid(s). Which tends to mean an age difference, since most women aren't still having kids when they retire. (Unless his father was younger and 'medically' retired for some reason... something obviously not life-threatening, since he was around to be 'eventually' proud of Kaidan's enlistment, but still something that got in the way of being declared fit for active duty.)

I also think Kaidan's either got younger siblings, or a seriously ill relative who lived with them, because he just exudes protective instincts to me. He's good at taking care of people.

And you have to have the horses come back. ^_~

on another note, sadly, I don't have an old save from where Kaidan talked about Finch, but since my renegade PT just started, I can definitely lock the romance with him before I virmire him so I should get there eventually. Also, I frapsed the scene at the view in the wards for your viewing pleasure. I went both renegade-renegade and renegade-nice on him....the latter because his SAD look killed me so I reloaded a quicksave xD I'm a sucker for those eyeses.

Gonna start uploading now, will share the link in a bit. Don't mind the crazy quality. Been messing with my settings and couldn't be bothered to reset them

And if future Vegas is anything like today's, I can see Kaidan being a frequent visitor.

For the gambling, shows, clubs, drinking, etc?  No.  For the buffets, of course!

Actually, since Vegas has changed ownership from mob to non-mob those cheap buffetts and such are a thing of the past.

There are two camps:

One that is royally pissed at Kaidan about Horizon.
The other is pissed at Shepard and agrees with Kaidan.

These are like oil and water and it ends up devolving into an argument that just breeds animosity.

I'm another middle-of-the-roader.  It took two to tango, so to speak.  And the only thing that actually pissed me off was the lack of decent dialogue choices.

since my comments are being brought up from yesterday, the words ban such and such a topic never came up in anything i posted. i said we go overboard with the garrus talk to the point i feel we're in the garrus support thread. also, i said i'd like to bury the horizon discussion because i did not like how it always devolved into something i wanted no part of. again, i never banned any topic. i don't have that power. i'm not sure anyone on here does. i was attempting, i thought in a polite, jovial way, to say 'hey, can this thread be about kaidan?!' and not slam kaidan or rare appearance by kaidan.

concerning the off-topic stuff, i apologized for my part in it. i do it without thinking and appreciate when someone steps in and reminds me to stay on topic. that sort of chatter does not appeal to the masses. and i for one would gladly take it to the kaas, which i have already done, instead of carrying on a conversation in the kast that made even one person feel as though they were being alienated.

^the above is my opinion alone and i had no idea it would start a kerfuffle. sorry about that.

Yay for happy Kaidan. ;) Thanks Jane.

I have no problem w/Kaidan having a past. Most of my Shepard's have a romantic past. Being 30 and not, is likely to indicate a high level of emotional unavailability, possibly enough that a romantic entanglement wouldn't be likely at all.

And look ... more Kaidan! Lost for Words updated again.

morning all!

There is a lot with the ME2 LI and Kaidan that are meant to be plot devices.  The boy scout sticks to his beliefs, and feels betrayed by Shep, so leaves.  But he also had a much higher emotional investment in Shepard than any of the other characters in ME1 (perhaps other than Liara--but unrequited).  So he's going to be more prone to over reacting.  That sets up a separation where disaster can happen and cause angst down the road.

Garrus is a friend and he is there.  Perhaps he always had a little thing for Shepard.  *Shrugs*  who knows.  But he's very different from Kaidan.  More of a vigilante.  And that may fit with some versions of Shepard better--perhaps some that are a bit more renegade.  He's a friend, he's there for Shepard when the previous LI is absent.  Perfect set up.  And remember, this is the 2nd installment of a trilogy.  That means this one is meant to be dark.  Not happy.  There are supposed to be things left up in the air--like the ME1 LI storyline.
I mean, Han and Leia don't exactly get to be happy at the end of Empire, do they?  Posted Image  At least Kaidan and Shepard got their kiss (and more) before being separated.  More than Han and Leia got.

As a hardcore SW nerd, I heartily second this post.  And this is probably one of the reasons I am optimistic for the resolution in ME3.

But Luke is such a boyscout ... and Garrus isn't.  [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/lol.png[/smilie]

I
think, character-wise, Kaidan makes a better Leia.  (What?!? I don't
think he's girly, just... he's more straightlaced leader type, not a
fast-talking rogue, and this despite my love for both Han and Kaidan.)  Which makes Shepard Han, for the romance arc, which is perfect, cause, well, isn't Han really most people's favorite main character?  [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie]

Also, Thane would be Mical - on account of all the meditating.   Garrus would be Bao-Dur - they both love their calibrations.  Mordin and Jolee like to ramble on.  Hmm... can't think of anyone for Jack.
