according to some posters on bsn and escapist, one of the only plausible reasons we romance kaidan is that we're anti-alien.  that's a new one.  also, i liked the 'why bother asking a girl.  you'll never understand the answer anyway.'

In my experience, guys who actively dislike Kaidan, and who are genuinely perplexed why girls, women and some men do like Kaidan, are the same guys who wonder why girls don't like them. "I'm a badass!! Look at my gamerscore!! How come the chicks don't dig me?" *chest thump*

Neanderthals. <_<

And for those who like it a bit different, how about this?

Well, back to lurking, I guess...:)

I tend to be pro-bisexual Kaidan, but would he really go for a Shepard with '80s hair? :P

I remember somebody on the BioWare forums said that Kaidan was the Jacob of ME1; that's why some people don't like him, I guess. They think he has no personality.

I'm just wondering if the thread author will ever read and respond to people who added their constructive opinion. I'm really tired of haters yet still I'm annoyed when I see such things, and I'm not talking about disliking Kaidan only here.

I'm not gonna defend Jacob here, he maybe had his romance written by someone... weird, but lack of personality would be the last words I'd use to describe him.
He's way different than Kaidan thou, it this was Polish board, I'd write a whole poem about it. Then again, I don't want to start comparisons about who's better and for who.

*sigh*

Apparently we like him because he has a dark past and he is in pain everyday. Apparently it's a fan girls dream.

Pahh, boo on them they obviously don't understand the complexities of a character. They seem to be more bothered about getting their Shep laid rather than bothering their dumb asses getting to know their crew. I feel a huge rant coming on but i shall stop now coz when i rant it goes on forever haha:)

randomly, re-posting this from the femshep thread: jennifer hale talking about being femshep. about 7 minutes in, talks about shepard's personality and history - cool stuff.

I actually like Jacob for the most part. I think from a combat standpoint he is somewhat underpowered, but the visual design is pretty good (I would make a few tweaks), and his overall personality isn't bad. He's not as compelling for me as Kaidan, at least not based on the limited dialog from ME2, but I hope his character is expanded and explored further in ME3, I'd like for him to get his day in the sun.

Random question: Who else thinks that Kaidan would look good with a haircut? I've often thought that his hair is a little off, I'd like to see him with a hairstyle more akin to Sheploo's.

Yay, I saw!

I never really saw a Kaidan support thread until ME2 forums . . . . . I only started going into the forums with news of ME2, but anyway, I do love how so many of us materialized out of lurker status. Cameo brought about a good thing, there!

Yeah, I guess so, shame it had to be that way though........... <_< I liked Kaidan (and Ashley) from the get go, when the game was released. I was amazed when I found out there was hate for either of them, tbh.........

There was a Kaidan support thread even before the first Mass Effect was released. People were trying to guess who's going to voice Kaidan, gathering every image of him and writing Kaidan fics... And the first game wasn't even out at that time. I was only a lurker though, like much nowdays, but I remember Kaidan getting muchos of love from the early days.

Sorry, I had to comment on that... :P

I want to contribute a Kaidan picture too! It was posted on the old forums by an active forum member, whose name I can't unfortunately remember. It was the time when no images of femShep had shown and people were getting worried if female Shepard exists at all and Kaidan will remain lonely...

i doubt it.  the person that posed the question obviously is not a fan and the thread was supposed to be about why you like kaidan.  it of course almost immediately turned into the dismiss kaidan and the girls that write fanfic about him thread instead.  with some ash bashing on the side.

yes, this one was laughing at that statement.  i'd pen a response but i have a feeling it would fall on deaf ears.

Maybe Kaidan's hair and Shepard's hair are spending time together outside of duty?

Prior to stumbling upon Mass Effect, I would have thrown myself into that lot (25,000 gamerscore?) but this game series, combined with my recent stalking of this thread (sue me:P) has changed my opinion dramatically.  Thank you, random fangirls, for your support of this fairly misunderstood character.

Kaidan is actually a very interesting character. Too bad I had to make a Femshep to figure all this out. A bromance similar to the one with Garrus would really help his 'rep' with all the idiots who bang Miranda for the whole bra scene...

You sure those "idiots" would bother with a bromance anyway?

I wouldn't really characterize myself as a fangirl, especially since my favorite characters in the game tend not to be the LI's (see avatar), but I do like the Kaidan character. They did a great job with the writing, and the visual design is strong. It's a tough balancing act to get a character to look individualistic and attractive at the same time, and they did a good job. More importantly though, the voice acting and writing supported the visual extremely well. If the writing was bad, if the character had no story, I don't think many of us would be fans of the character. From a purely visual standpoint, there are more attractive characters than Kaidan in the game (some of my ManSheps are freakin' hawt, y'all), but his background and characterization are really interesting and relatable. I don't think it should be any surprise that he is popular.

They all seem to think Garrus is badass (which is true)
But probably not.  Kaidan is kind of a turn off to manly men in that he has a weakness.  The 'idiots' in question probably put him off as gay and want to stay the hell away to keep their character 'pure'.  But it's that attitude that is what makes them so ignorant in the first place.  Regardless, they have their place, and it isn't here.

Kaidan's too cautious. That's his weakness.

And some us would put blindly trusting the Council as a weakness, but that's a completely different bag of stuff there XD

He's sensitive and realistic. You forget these are the people who play Brothers in Arms for the frat-boy talk. They make their Shepards into Master Chief or Marcus Fenix-esque characters in the hopes of being awesome. Kaidan, the reality-grounded man with a terrible past and migraines has no place in their idealized galaxy.

...sorry I got a little carried away...

I think Kaidan's perceived weakness is that he's not an in-your-face rude jerk. Guys who are cooperative and reasonable tend to be viewed as effeminate by a certain subset of the male population. These are guys who insult each other to show they care, that they are "bros".

And let the record show that Garrus is, in fact, a badass (in a good way).

LOL, my seven year old *insisted* yesterday that I bring Garrus with me to Tali's loyalty mission, because Garrus has a real helmet and Miranda doesn't.  Apparently little kids should be advising the people making these games about common sense.

Regarding the myths in the Escapist thread and everywhere but here:

Women like Kaidan because they're anti-alien:  PFFT.  I will freely admit that I prefer humans and asari aesthetically over turians and drell, but personality goes a long way, even in a game.  If Kaidan didn't exist, I would have chosen Thane and Garrus over Jacob in ME2, and I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one.  But Kaidan does exist, and I really, really like Kaidan, so I'm not getting the Paramour achievement this time around, because I am a big nerdy roleplayer and paranoid about statistics being uploaded.

Apparently we like him because he has a dark past and he is in pain everyday. Apparently it's a fan girls dream:  I like Kaidan because he has *overcome* a dark incident in his past, and came out relatively normal and kind and decent.  That's remarkable, when you think about it.  The fact that he also has migraines and never complains about them to FemShep (and only mentions them once to MaleShep), is also noteworthy.  He opens up to Shepard, but he makes an effort to never complain.

Kaidan was the Jacob of ME1; that's why some people don't like him. They think he has no personality:  Kaidan and Jacob both have personalities, and they're pretty different, other than being Human Male Party Members.  If the game was filled with only humans, it would be very apparent, but I guess because aliens are just so much more interesting just by the virtue of being aliens, they're the same?  Of course they have some similarities, but I can draw similarities between Jack and Miranda, or Miranda and Ashley.  Does that mean they're all boring and lack personality, because they are human and have some common traits?

Anyway, no one in the Escapist thread actually *wants* to hear what fans think, which is sad.  I'm not going to waste energy trying to convince them to open their eyes if they don't want to.
