Jacob not being tight? What?! I have a problem with both Jacob and Miranda, that being that the two of them are idealized body shapes. Jacob looks like a swimmer, and a crazy one at that, while I'm sure everyone knows Miranda...jillyfae wrote...

Well, per chance Jack is trying to use it to her tactical advantage. All that flesh flying at male adversaries at once? They won't know which gun to use.
Weirdly enough, Jack's get up only bothers me in hostile environments, where she really ought to be in a suit of some sort. It fits her personality the rest of the time. And she has proper heavy boots on, at least?
I am more annoyed by Samara and Miranda's heels, to be perfectly honest. Who fights in heels if they don't have to? (The cumulative effect of all three outfit choices, however well they may fit the personality quirks bioware wanted to highlight, is highly disturbing. Stupid bioware and excessive fan service.)
I mean, Garrus gets to wear armor the entire game, and Jacob and Thane and Mordin at least have clothes over their entire bodies that aren't so tight as to show off everything underneath them, even if they don't actually look like proper combat-wear.
And, um, on topic, combat hurts. Armor is good:

NOpe, the explanation to Jack's get up is writer's libido.
While we're at it, mr Rhodes had many cool concepts: 1. 2.
About Kaidan's five o'clock shadow, it applies to most of men with deep brown/black hair, alas, to every guy I know with this color, my father included.
LOL, explain my husband, then (auburn haired). I think it's amount, not shade.
My husband's hair, while brown, isn't really all that dark. It is very thick, though. Kaidan appears to have both dark and thick hair, so his poor face is just doomed.

My husband's had that problem too, really thick, coarse brown hair paired up ultra sensitive skin. So not too long after we were married (coming up on 15 years now) he just grew a beard and said to hell with shaving.

LOL, my seven year old *insisted* yesterday that I bring Garrus with me to Tali's loyalty mission, because Garrus has a real helmet and Miranda doesn't. Apparently little kids should be advising the people making these games about common sense.
Regarding the myths in the Escapist thread and everywhere but here:
Women like Kaidan because they're anti-alien: PFFT. I will freely admit that I prefer humans and asari aesthetically over turians and drell, but personality goes a long way, even in a game. If Kaidan didn't exist, I would have chosen Thane and Garrus over Jacob in ME2, and I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one. But Kaidan does exist, and I really, really like Kaidan, so I'm not getting the Paramour achievement this time around, because I am a big nerdy roleplayer and paranoid about statistics being uploaded.
Apparently we like him because he has a dark past and he is in pain everyday. Apparently it's a fan girls dream: I like Kaidan because he has *overcome* a dark incident in his past, and came out relatively normal and kind and decent. That's remarkable, when you think about it. The fact that he also has migraines and never complains about them to FemShep (and only mentions them once to MaleShep), is also noteworthy. He opens up to Shepard, but he makes an effort to never complain.
Kaidan was the Jacob of ME1; that's why some people don't like him. They think he has no personality: Kaidan and Jacob both have personalities, and they're pretty different, other than being Human Male Party Members. If the game was filled with only humans, it would be very apparent, but I guess because aliens are just so much more interesting just by the virtue of being aliens, they're the same? Of course they have some similarities, but I can draw similarities between Jack and Miranda, or Miranda and Ashley. Does that mean they're all boring and lack personality, because they are human and have some common traits?
Anyway, no one in the Escapist thread actually *wants* to hear what fans think, which is sad. I'm not going to waste energy trying to convince them to open their eyes if they don't want to.
Very eloquently said. I agree with everything here. Though sadly any informing of ill-advised gamers would most likely fail. The people around me that I've noticed don't like Kaidan also tend to be the type of people that caremore about action than plot, resolving issues rather than dealing with feelings, and hasn't kept a SO for longer than 6 months.
Personally, I love Kaidan because I find his character has a lot of depth and thought behind it. You can tell he was lovingly crafted, and not just thrown into the game. You learn about BAaT through him, and why it was shut down. You learn why he's so reserved and self-controlled. You get to understand Kaidan and be amazed that he has managed to come through all of this adversity with sensitivity and empathy. Rather than lose himself, he found a rock-hard center that has carried him through life. I love that kind of depth to a person.
I imagine people don't like Ashley because she didn't have that. But I figured the events of ME1 with a paragon Shepard were akin to helping her realize she could be so much greater and better than she is. And when you reach Virmire, she's more than willing to give up her life for everyone on the Normandy without regrets. What more can anyone ask of someone? Seriously. She lays down her life for the crew of the Normandy.
Jacob personally isn't my cup of tea, but that's because he's a little more... rough around the edges? than I prefer. As a non-LI, he's great and I like chatting with him. He's frank, honest, and doesn't bull-**** Shepard or try to manipulate Shepard. He voices his opinion, and while you may not always agree with him, at least he was honest about it. I respect that. And he'll change his mind or think about what you've said (based on conversations I've had with him at least).
Meh. I'm pretty damn accepting of people in general. I've just never understood the character hate.
Plus, Kaidan just freaking rocks. He's sexy, sweet, honest, and fights like a badass. 'Nuff said.

And Kaidan's looks weren't what initially made me interested in the character. His voice was and I got used to his darker look (I tend to be attracted to Northern Europe coloration with dark hair and blue eyes). But Kaidan's writing was just so lovely that his character is one of my all-time favorites in fiction. The fact that he looks different from my usual heros in my favorite stories now just makes him all the more exotic and sexy.
Point #2: When Chakwas mentioned Kaidan's migraines, I expected that to play a part in the game at some point. And he never let it interfere with duty or even complained about it. Heck. He never even complained about his past. He just used it as an illustration as an effort to help Shepard through the moral quagmire that this mission could become.
And he's one of the few characters in the series that never asks anything of Shepard. No special missions. No favors. The only thing he asks is to be treated with honesty if you get the "confrontation" scene with Liara. And in that he's extremely mature.

i think a big chunk of the problem is the set-up. kaidan had no cool intro sequence. i think a lot of the people take the cut scenes where the character is introduced as their complete understanding of the character. that means that since garrus snipes people, he = cool (and he is, though not just because of that). wrex is snotty to a cop and shoots fist = cool. tali/ashley/liara require rescuing. (omg, don't even get me started on THAT), which = hawt. maybe. but ashley's tough, so that might not be hot.
anyhow, i think people who see thane kick butt, jack break loose, etc. see kaidan just sitting next to joker and then asking anderson if they have leave to save survivors on eden prime and everyone assumes "oh, weak."
but to find out otherwise requires a sort of willingness to find out more about the character by talking to them than these folks obviously want to do.

Well, that's the thing, didn't you know? You can't be a 'real man' in the eyes of a 13-year-old boy if you have 'feelings' for a woman. They're still coming to terms with having erections, grown-up emotions are still a foreign language, and they don't even know the alphabet yet. Only an immature idiot thinks turning down a threesome is a sign of anything other than having character and self-respect. And if my decades-old memory serves, middle school boys are just such immature idiots.

I guess they don't like that Kaidan's not strutting around like a freaking "bamf" all the time. I mean, I think he's a pretty great character (understatement here), even not as a love interest. I mean, he was great as Shep's second in command, had a quirky sense of humor and was actually fun to interact with between and on missions ("Mom was right, I should have brought a sweater"). I don't understand what's hard to get about that. And yeah, I don't fancy my chances explaining why us fangirls go a bit loco over Kaidan. All I have to say for them is this: go figure.

@ sian: yeah. BW has their work cut out for them, that's for sure. i guess the only thing you can really do is make a host of characters, hope that everyone will find one that resonates for them, and make the game sufficiently customizable that you can ignore the parts that just don't do it for you. kind of how i tried to ignore the consort for all i was worth.
