I'd say for the next series.  Not necessarily the next game.  We have the quintessential (sp?) male LI already. 
But their character is supposed to be the b.a. of the team.  So the male LI would be redundant and they likely wouldn't use him anyways.
Besides, Kaidan does kick butt.  He's a great squadmate on missions.  He has biotic, he has tech and he has his pistol.  I routinely trust that as a NPC he has my back in the game itself.  If I don't get around to lifitng the Collossus quickly enough, or if my lift has worn off, he's done it before I can even think to bring up the action wheel to make him do it.
They would just rather have the woman in the catsuit probably at the side.  *shrugs*

@ jade: no, that's so true: the real reason is because the male player's character MUST be the baddest man on the team and clearly we can't have two cool guys without establishing that the PC is cooler in EVERY way and has no room for anything but a harem squad of females in tight clothing.

i think women tend to be so thrilled to find another strong female character in games that they're happy to have women that are badass as the main femPC. however, the same thing goes the other way in women who dislike miranda or jack or whatever on grounds that (to me, anyhow) sound suspiciously like "they're cooler/prettier than my PC"

Exactly! I love it when the crew (including women!) are all competent, capable members. I don't like it when dev's bend over backwards to make sure that the player is more awesome and badass in every way. That's one of the reasons why I love Mass Effect so freaking much. Your crew in both games doesn't feel like it's chock full of incompetent jackasses who think they're the best thing alive. I don't think the PC should be any different. You should complement your crew, not over-shadow them and make them practically unnecessary. 

Going in to ME2 I thought I was gonna hate Jack, based on the subject zero clips and what not, but I absolutely fell in love with her character. And I looooooove writing her lines in my fanfic. Miranda's like an onion with a "frosty ****" exterior, and I think she's amazing. I particularly love her line at the end of the game if you're a paragon and took her with you on the final mission: "Consider this my resignation." Haha, stuff it TIM.

Sort of like a Chris Redfield (Resident Evil 5) type? I would be down with that. He's a nice mix of good guy and bamf.

Nah.  Wrex just wants Kaidan and Shepard to breed so he can raise himself an army of human warriors with a pedigree.  Which is cool if you're into that sort of thing, but not really LI material.

(Though I was curious why he doesn't have a thread of his own.  )

You know I really love this picture, who made it?

I love the juxtaposition of it. Kaidan standing with the Citadel in the background as place just like him is/was broken (when shepard was KIA) and had/has to rebuild. And just like the Citadel hes not completely healed as apparent when he sees Shepard again on horizon.
Versus Shepard standing in what looks like a confined space. Not much light or air, its like a reminder of the burden shes faced with. She pretty much cant get a break. Shes brought back from death and thrust into her duty again. She has no escape from what she must do, whether she wants to be a hero or not she hasnt really got a choice if she wont do it, who else will? She doesnt get any human moments, she has to present herself as superwoman all the time. Its like that picture of kaidan on her desk not only reminds us that she longs for him, but it reminds us that shes a human, not superwoman and needs support as physically represented with her leaning agaisnt a wall much like kaidan. Longing for the support of her loved one

Sorry done some rambling and probably boring analysis to you guys (i love analysing things) about this picture (well if anyone cares to read it). Not saying that is was the owner's intention Its just I was looking at it think wow this shepard is beautiful and part of that was the emotion captured in her face. it seems like its telling a thousand words. Meh or I should go to bed because its 2am you know either one
