Jade,
I HATED Kaidan's letter. With a passion. Rant to follow!
The apology part was fine, of course. But the rest of it I just found incredibly hurtful. When I started playing ME2, I felt so lonely. I missed the crew from the first game immensely. Shepard sounds so sad/ angry/ hurt when she says to TIM (another acronym....finally figured that one out!!) "I get it. They're not available." Referring to her former crew.
Can you imagine waking up after two years of your life have disappeared in a cold, unfamiliar, and sterile lab? All the people that she knew and cared about were gone. She was thrown into the lion's den, so to speak, full of untrustworthy Cerberus operatives. I've never been able to warm up to Miranda or Jacob and I still don't trust them.
Then Horizon happens and she sees Kaidan again. He won't really listen to her and he pretty much calls her a traitor and just walks away. Ugh. But then that letter....it just gets worse.
He's so wishy washy. "Ilos meant everything to me. You were dead. I've tried to get on with my life. I kicked back a few drinks with some tart citadel doctor. Blah blah blah. Maybe, just maybe when things 'settle down' I just might give you the time of day. I claim to have loved you but I've abandoned you in what is probably one of the most difficult times of your life. Good luck with the Collectors. Try not to get hurt. See ya." - Kaidan
I can understand his immediate reaction at Horizon and I can even justify some of his logic. But his email....hate, hate, hate it.
LOL /rant over
Edited to add: I agree about being frustrated by the fact that Spacer Shepard doesn't appear to contact her mother, so much so in fact, that I addressed that, too, in my fic. In fact, it plays rather a large part. I think she absolutely would have contacted Hannah Shepard, hands down.
