@allerleihrau - sesh posted this about a week ago.  after the last mission prior to ilos, you have a rather lengthy chat with kaidan.  take the paragon path up until:

K:  No bull, Shepard. I wanna follow through with this.  It's tough keeping it separated from duty.  But when the mission's complete, it'll be different.

K:  I hope you feel the same way. Ma'am.

Then pick the neutral option:

S:  (Absolutely.)  I hear you soldier.  I’m waiting with bated breath.

K :  Oh, you are good at that.  Shepard you are hard to step away from.

K:  We'll get this done Commander.  The sooner the better.

Re: Horizon.

I'm of the, "I wish Shepard had a better variety of dialogue" crowd.  I can understand Kaidan being pissed off, but I can't get Shepard blaming him for not understanding her working for Cerberus (when I don't understand her working for Cerberus, as it's presented).  But Horizon was possibly my favorite part of ME2, after the prologue, so... *shrug?*

Re: The Letter

I thought the letter was very Kaidan.  He's laying everything on the table and letting Shepard make the call.

Re: Ethnicity

A mix of things, like everybody else in THE FUTURE.  ^_^

Re: "You are hard to step away from."

I get this line a lot.  It's at the end of a conversation, I think either the third or fourth, but I don't remember how to trigger it.  I thought it was the automatic end of conversation line for that conversation, too, but I guess not.

Sorry for interrupting with a completely unrelated question (still about Kaidan though), but I figured if anyone knows Kaidan's dialogue by heart, it's the people posting here.

I remember that at some point in his ME 1 dialogue, Kaidan says "You are hard to step away from, Shepard." (or something similar). I got this line the first time I played the game (that was ~ 2 months ago, I know I'm quite late), but I just don't find it anymore, despite saving before talking to him and trying different dialogue routes.
Now I want to re-play ME 1 with my main Shepard again and, of course, romance Kaidan. I'd really like to hear the line this time, can anyone tell me when (and how) to get it?

Thanks! :)

yeah, sirius totally beat me to it.

i will add, it's the 4th below decks convo.  first one is about Baat, 2nd about "letting things slide" intro fo vyrrnus, 3rd is about killing vyrrnus, 4th is about shore leave.

have a kaidan:

I thought it's the one where he tells you that he wants to follow through with whatever the two of you have and asks Shepard if she feels the same. You have to pick the neutral option and then you get: "Oh, you are good at that. Shepard you are hard to step away from."

This is one thing that puzzles me about people who absolutely despise Kaidan and Ashley after Horizon:  what did they actually expect them to do?  Go AWOL from the Alliance and join Cerberus, because Shepard asked nicely???  Even if they weren't as upset, or didn't call Shepard a traitor, what were they supposed to think, when Shepard shows up with no explanation of where she's been for two years?

Very well said. It's even worse when they start to compare Ash and Kaidan's reaction to Tali and Garrus joining you without a question. As if the two situations were even remotely comparable.

yeah, i tune out the who's more loyal argument.  it's very silly.

Well it's not Horizon - but there is certainly Kaidan in it...

Chapter 15 Should Shadows Be Avoided?  of Panoplied is up... for those interested...

and of course you deserve a Kaidan....

this one is apropos:

Ok, first of all: thank you all very much for your incredibly quick and helpful answers! :)

I've just tried it (as most people here, I just happen to have a savegame before every conversation with him  ) and although I don't know why, I'm still not getting this line. I used the right conversation (as siriusrambles said, the one after the last mission before Ilos, it starts with "We're so close now"), used the upper right Paragon options and I did get Kaidan's

"No bull, Shepard. I wanna follow through with this.  It's tough
keeping it separated from duty.  But when the mission's complete, it'll
be different. I hope you feel the same way. Ma'am."

But then, picking the middle option (Absolutely) my Shepard says

"I hear you soldier. I'm in agreement." (instead of " I’m waiting with bated breath.")

to which Kaidan answers

"Glad to hear it."

Why can't my Shepard sy the line she's supposed to say, so Kaidan can say the line he is supposed to say?! *sobs*
Seriously though, does anyone know what's causing this?

Is it before or after Virmire? Because I thought some lines changed in response to that... and I thought I generally got that conversation around then.

... also, is he renegaded? (I'm not sure if it makes a difference for that line in particular, but I haven't played through in a while and it never hurts to check particulars).

You might have to renegade Kaidan to get that line. I'm not sure, though. :/

yes. it is. tali is out on missions. garrus is a VIGILANTE. kaidah/ash are alliance soldiers. they are not even in remotely the same relationship to cerberus. and if you romanced ash/kaidan they have further reason to be angry. again, it's the problem of people mistaking characterization for "disloyalty because the NPC didn't fall at my feet." *grumble grumble*

anyhow

@ all:  no clue. that's where that line should be.  hmmm... could it be an earlier convo hangover? i always ended the previous convo full paragon answers. anyone know?

@Alle Fire may be right about it being because of the Virmire status. A few of the lines do change. Before Virmire, Kaidan ends his line about "no bull" with "I hope you feel the same. Ma'am." That's when you get my favorite path in that dialogue.

After Virmire it's "At least I hope so. Ma'am," and the responses aren't nearly as fun.

i got that line pre-virmire, non-renegaded kaidan, if that helps any.

I get that line from Kaidan and I never renegade him, so its not that. I will have to check one of my playthroughs though to see if its before or after Virmire but I don't remember that making a difference. Up until that conversation I usually take the paragon options in every conversation with him.

@ FireEye
It's after Virmire. In this playthrough I did Feros->Therum->Virmire->Noveria, so this conversation is after Noveria for me. You might be on to something here, because in my very first playthrough I did Virmire last and I got this line then.

@ FireEye & Chignon
He is not renegaded. But as I've never renegaded him in any playthrough yet, but still got the line once.

[edit]
Honestly, can I type any slower?!

So, if I understand this correctly, I have to go to Virmire last to get the dialogue path I want?

Thank you all again for helping me to figure this out! :)

Sesh and Alle, I'm 99% sure that FireEye is right and to get the line about "you're hard to step away from" you have to have the conversation before Virmire. The fact that Sesh has the line "I hope you feel the same, ma'am" instead of "At least I hope so, ma'am" is the biggest tip-off.

pre virmire makes sense. huh. i really didn't realize kaidan changed up his convos after, but it makes sense - poor guy is probably feeling a little shell shocked then.

which just goes to show that while i love me2 a LOT, i do miss the writing/convos from me1. they were more nuanced, to say the least.

@allerleihrau - the conversation i mentioned was with a non-renegaded kaidan following virmire. i usually save that mission for last.

I just checked again, and I too get "At least I hope so, ma'am."

It's settled then. I usually like to go to Virmire straight away, but for Kaidan's sake, the salarians will have to wait a bit longer from now on. Ah well, that way Ashley can spend a little more time in the cargo deck.

Thank you all so much! I know, I've thanked you a couple of times now, but this was really driving me crazy as I kept reloading and reloading all the conversations and just not getting it.

Ok just checked one of my playthroughs and I got that line before Virmire in that one anyway.  I'd already done Novaria, Feros, & Therum.  I usually mix up the order I do the missions in though so I will check some of my other playthroughs when I get a chance.  I can't help myself I always save before I talk to Kaidan in every playthrough, lol.

You might still be able to get it while doing Virmire third if you do a lot of sidequests to run through the dialogues quicker, but I'm not sure how the sidequests are measured when it comes to the dialogues.

Well, that would explain why I always get the "hard to step away from" line. I always do Virmire last. And I always go through all of the conversations before Virmire (I try to spread them out. I hated how big of a gap there was my first play through between the last conversation with him and the kiss-near-miss scene.)

I'll try that. If the relevant conversation hasn't come up when I have to decide where to go for the third mission, I'll just avoid Virmire.

But I have to say, having different dialogue trees depending on the oder of completing missions really shows how much more effort was put into the romances of ME 1. (Understandable though, doing this for all six romances in ME 2 would have been a huge effort. Sometimes, less really is more.)

the order of missions does change kaidan's responses. i have so many kaidan save files that i'm getting them confused. it's prior to virmire. not after.

Quite true.  2 choices per sex would be plenty.  ME1 was a little odd in having 2 choices by for femSheps who don't really swing the other direction only one choice.  However, in case of Kaidan, no other choice was really necessary anyways.  Had there been 10 choices I would have romanced him.  Posted Image
