I can't help but think--to what extent are our perceptions of Kaidan influenced by fanfiction? I know I've been reading my fair share. You guys think the same way?

Mine have been influenced by fanfiction, too. But I don't think that's a bad thing. You get to see different views regarding  is character and actions, throughout the game and after, filling in the blanks that were left by Bioware or sometimes just giving a new sense to something that we found hard to accept like Horizon or not being able to reply to kaidan's message. And sometimes just things I hadn't considered this way before or even noticed

We really have so many talented writers in this thread, it is hard not to be somewhat influenced by their stories. Posted Image

I'm with y'all on the reading thing. Not much else to do and I'd imagine ebooks are easy to come by and can be read on one's omnitool. Dunno 'bout reading Fornax, though.... :)

JaerWolfe touched on her view of Kaidan's appreciation of asari in her latest fic, and the reason she gave makes sense.  A race of beautiful women for whom biotics are natural, who would not fear or distrust someone like him.  For a teenaged boy, that would sound very appealing...

on the subject of fanfiction, i formed my opinion of kaidan while playing the game.  defining in my mind his quirks, personality traits, his background and such.  when reading other perspectives, i gleaned new insights into the man.  it did not change how i initially took to him but it reinforced what a well-developed character he was in the mass effect universe.  jaer writes kaidan very closely to how i view him.

in relation to everyone else, my indifference for a couple squadmates has improved by reading fanfiction.  understanding them in a way i never did before.  it has its benefits but unfortunately is often discounted by detractors.

I should read other fandom FF's but its hard for me to see Shepard with anyone but Kaidan. I might try Thane FF. Just haven't gotten around to it.

Jaer's new story rocked!

You all have to read her stuff.

And yeah. I never thought about the Asari preoccupation from that POV until Jaer pointed it out--that for Kaidan a race of beautiful women that were strong biotics would naturally be attractive for him when he's on a planet of "normal" human girls that are fearful of his talents.

I think he only starts to realize his own interest after that line.  The way he makes the comparison, he sounds like he's out in space and not even talking to Shepard for a moment.  He also only starts to actively show interest after Shepard does ("do you talk to everyone like this?") and I personally think ME1 spans quite a bit of time that they can get to know each other.

What about his conversation with Ash when you are looking out over the Destiny Ascension?  Shep can make a sort of vaguely romantic statement there that isn't expressly targeted at him and he stumbles a little as he agrees with her.  Ash even ribs him about it.  And there is also the little pleased smirk he gives when you thank him for bringing you back to the ship post Eden Prime. Granted that could just be chalked up him being concerned because he triggered the beacon and he is just pleased that you don't blame him for it.  I personally thank the moment Shep pulls him away from the beacon is the moment he starts to get interested.  Same with Ashley.

I agree actually. I think the beacon scene on Eden Prime is the catalyst for Kaidan's interest. So long as you don't rebuff him outright, he gets that little half-smile. I think it's just an innocent crush at that point though. It's not until you get into further conversations and drop similar signals that he really gets stricken.

And going back to an early thought from other posters, I do disagree with the thought that Kaidan is socially inept around women. Yes, there is that whole awkward, flustered thing he has in a few places in regards to Shepard. I've always felt that it had less to do with the fact that Shepard is a woman, and more to do with Shepard being his superior officer. He's a career man and a stickler for Regs. It's hard to be smooth when you don't want to get thrown off your post or out of the service.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.  I don't think he's socially inept, but more thinking out loud and then getting flustered because she is his superior officer.  That's how I always hear it, anyway.  Honestly, I don't think he even realizes what he's said until Ashley ribs him about it.  Whereas Ashley's go-go boots statement is an open flirt.

As an aside, I LOVE that little smirk.  Some people have commented about how it's Kaidan's voice that they fall in love with first, but for me, it is that smirk!  And if my Shep was looking at him, instead of away, that is when she would have fallen for him!  Posted Image

You know, its funny. I take Kaidan's being a biotic for granted. And we all seem to find it an attractive quality. But I tend to forget how odd and potentially frightening it would be to the "common" person in the ME universe. And how potentially ostracisized Kaidan might feel outside of the military.

That's because we're all adventurous women (or men!) like our Shep.  Posted Image

No! He does NOT!
FemShep (yeah female impersonator) during FIRST conversation after getting Liara, Kaidan:wub: prefers a woMAN of ACTION (upper left option, FemShep NO lower left option), not some bookish type. And he is NOT into casual sex. Liara is soft and squishy, "where do you get a good grip?"
He also says that line with MaleShep both at the med clinic & landing dock.

Kaidan expresses an attraction to Liara if Shepard doesn't get to him first.
After Therum:
Shep: Just remember, I saw her first.
Kaidan: Only by a few seconds.

If you pick her up after Virmire (he says this regardless of if he's romanced):
Shep: Just how old are you exactly?
Liara: I hate to admit it but I am only a hundred and six.
Kaidan: *looking Liara up and down* You sure look good for your age. I-I mean, you don't look that old.

So yeah, he's attracted to Liara. A lot. But femShep always trumps that attraction.

I know, right?!

It also proves that he doesn't know how to talk to *any* attractive woman and is prone to word vomit. :pinched:

true, but he's also pretty vague about "she's nice enough, i suppose" if you ask him about liara earlier. i truly take it that kaidan is not a social outcast, but he's an introvert who is very much focused on the job. biotics add to that, i think. he's able to interact fine so long as the rules of engagement are in place. with ashley, he very much comes off as the veteran helping out the newbie, and he's really nice about it and very cool. with liara, that's a little out of his depth as an attractive alien who sort of shows up out of nowhere, but he can easily think of her as someone they're helping out. shepard though, if she pursues a relationship with him, continually is throwing him into unfamiliar territory. CO, beautiful woman, not afraid of his biotics, someone he can't keep completely safe - it all adds up to kaidan very much confused as to what to do and what to say.

my take, anyhow

I was going to say that its not that he's socially inept.  He's an introvert.  Chakwas says that he keeps to himself.
Its probably the fact that femShep goes out of her way to engage him in conversation that he's able to break out of his shell a bit more.  Also that his couple of slips aren't rebuffed, too.
With his biotics, he's likely had a few bad experiences when he has tried to be more bold (outside of the chain of command, of course) and may have been made to feel out of place due to his biotics.  Heck.  Even Rhana who had biotics rejected him because of what he could do with his abilities.

EDIT:  Man.  What an idiot she was!  LOL.

I'm not saying he's socially inept; he's proven that he can talk to mShep and to Ash. It's just that he's not very good at talking to women that he finds attractive, which seems to be a common male affliction xD

Personally, Kaidan has always struck me as the kind of guy who has a stack of messages from ex-girlfriends waiting on his omni-tool. You know the guy. Quiet, serious, doesn't go out much. Smiles politely at the waitress. Ends up running into her into the library and the supermarket, and doesn't seem to notice that he's being hunted. Ends most relationships in a friendly way. He totally seems like that guy.

Rat bastard. I hate that guy.
