JaerWolfe touched on her view of Kaidan's appreciation of asari in her latest fic, and the reason she gave makes sense.  A race of beautiful women for whom biotics are natural, who would not fear or distrust someone like him.  For a teenaged boy, that would sound very appealing...

This was something of a revelation... and is probably the only thing I've picked up out of fic about Kaidan that may stick.

I still didn't get the impression that he liked Liara in the like way (between the "it's just art appreciation" and "I never claimed to be big on alien culture" lines), though I suspect he did look at her (and other asari).  Still haven't played a ManShep, so I may be missing half the information quota, there.  And probably the reason I always get Ashley commenting on Liara's age.  XD

maybe this is me putting ideas of my own onto kaidan, but i think it's entirely possible (quite likely) that he would appreciate asari while not really wanting one. i mean, given the oversimplified explanation, they are a race of hot biotic lesbians. seriously, kaidan noticing that is not surprising. however, i got the impression that he's not into casual flings (his several lines to that affect) and so that implied to me he was looking for something more settled and lasting. while it's possible he could build that with an asari, i think he's looking for something that is a better...fit? i guess i see kaidan as asari-curious, but truly into human women.

in some ways, i think shep is a slightly odd fit. she brings him out of his shell, but she's not the perfect match. it makes their relationship more interesting imo. i guess that's why it hurt so much to hear him say on horizon, "i thought we had something real" - because i saw shep + kaidan as a very real couple, so it was sad to see that breaking.

hmmm...back to DLC thread. Want fixing of shenko, bioware! please??

I agree.  He's a guy.  He's gonna look and I'm sure he appreciates the asari asthetic.
As far as wanting that in his real life?  I agree with you that it is unlikely.  He wouldn't actively pursue an asari woman simply for the asari allure.  If he built a friendship with one and it went from there, that would be different.

I think it depends on the Shepard.  I think some are a really good mesh.  Others may not look like it, but are.  And I don't think there's likely a "perfect" match.  I agree with Jaer's fic that with his reading of stories when he was younger he likely pictured himself as the hero on the white horse.  With Shepard, he's been the damsel in distress instead at times and she's the hero.  I wonder if that rankled him at times.  But while she's the flamboyant woman in front type of hero that storms in and takes charge, he's the quiet often-overlooked hero who has everyone's back and tries to bring everyone home back safe.  I would guess that he doesn't catch that about himself.

Well Kaidan is a man - as mentioned he's going to have his boyish moments. He clearly sees the Asari as attractive, but as Jade said he wouldn't pursue one simply because they are Asari - Kaidan does say that Liara is not his type.

@ jade - i guess you're right. i do think it depends on the type of shep.

this is something i miss from ME1: the extensive coverage of the background stories for shep. added such a level of depth and humanity to shep - not to mention role playing. i think that's something that ME2 really lacked. every shep felt the same because everyone responds to shep in the same way. those little mentions here and there of shep's history really made it feel shep-centric as a story. ah well...

i just miss kaidan's awkward,"Is that why you're here, because of your family?" i always imagined his chagrin to hear an earthborn or colonist response, his nod of understanding to a spacer. lol

edit: chagrin because he probably thought he'd opened some old wounds there. poor kaidan.

But the first story really is more about origins and the intro to the universe (in addition to the first part of the story).
The second act by design isn't going to re-introduce concepts that should already be in play from the first game.

If they want so many new gamers to jump on the franchise without playing ME1, then any important concepts in the first game do need restating.  (Just look at Kaidan - if Horizon was the only introduction and exposition you got regarding his character).

It could have had more acknowledgments of the background choices than simply the news broadcasts and Miranda's astonishment at Shepard being [raised in such a way] and still being perfect - besides, they didn't exhaust the potential background quests in the first game at all.

kaidan seems open-minded and tolerant. capable of having a relationship with the person not the vessel.

my mainshep is a good fit for him because they compliment each other. i'm sure that's not the case for every femshep.

@fire - the dlc thread is the perfect example of what happens when a gamer does not play me1 and the opinions that they form because of it.

They didn't exhaust the potential of anything. Background, returning from the dead, relationships and character interaction, character development, forming an actual team instead of just putting individuals together with barely any dialogue and so on.

Newcomers just don't get why Kaidan and Ash acted the way they did on Horizon, why it was such a big deal for them that Shepard was now with Cerberus. They just see them yelling at their Shepard, accusing him/her to be a traitor for no apparent reason and that results in what some of us may have seen in the VS DLC Wishlist-thread.

Jade, I love that picture of Kaidan so much.

I can't imagine playing ME2 without playing ME1 first. I know the option is there, of course, but you would lose so much in the development of the story. Maybe ME3 could have some flashback sequences to help get new players up to speed.  Nothing could compare with playing all 3 games though.

I've been updating my fic all week. I think it's safe to say that I am Kaidan-addicted. I can't get enough!

No kidding.

Sometimes I'm happy my favorite squadmates were sidelined, though.  Usually when I try to imagine a ME2 style love scene for Kaidan and Ashley, cross reference the human love scenes for comparison (none of which appeal to me), and end up making this face:

hey could we all make a pact to not respond to anything a certain someone says in the dlc thread. it's only encouraging his ignorance. he's also in the disappointed with me2 thread talking about the mistakes in me1. i am refraining from responding that he never played it.

It's obvious s/he is trolling, so I agree, sirius.

to FireEye: Yes, with what I know now I'm also glad, though I just wish - as I have already said numerous times - that things were handled differently and with more care to characters some of us have really grown attached to.

Oh God, yes, the love scenes of ME2. I don't know why exactly but I just prefer the ME1 ones. They seem more profound and tasteful. Maybe a return of them in ME3? I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I know. I was just making one more attempt to talk sense to them. *Rolls eyes*

I, obviously, liked the love scenes in ME1 better, but it would be/would have been nice to be able to snuggle with Kaidan like you can with your LI in ME2.

I don't think the Miranda and Jacob romance scenes were good (no dialog/bad dialog), but the Thane, Tali, and Garrus (haven't seen Jack's yet) romance scenes were okay IMO.

Agree.  Although I still get more out of the locker scene in ME1 than any of the love scenes in ME2.  The Miranda one I thought was particularly weird - like they were trying too hard to make it "hot" and it wound up a bit awkward.  Like seriously, the engine room??  And no kissing?  And the Jacob scene... yeah no words need to be said about that.

If I have to rank romance scenes:

THE ME1 scenes.

Tali, Jack, Garrus, Thane scene in ME2 - tied with locker scene.

Jacob and Mirandas romance scene.

Yeah, but Shepard grabbing Kaidan and then him pressing her against the entire length of himself is just soooo much better--nude scene or no nude scene.

EDIT:  I give up.  I such at being even a medium-core gamer.  I keep dying on Veteran with my maleShep (ME1).  I'm going back down to normal level.  LOL

It was more the final overcoming of that last barrier between people that nudged the ME1 scenes above the locker scene.

I like the dialouge before and after more than the nookies themselves though. Really got to see a human side of shepard more than in ME2.

I don't think either game did a great job of making Shepard seem like a real person and not a generic action hero, but ME1 was definitely better than ME2 here.
