Yeah, I hate to admit it, but I've had a playthrough where Ash was saved on Virmire. I hate that choice, and I think it leads to people projecting WAY more hate on both characters than they deserve, but it's just logical to save Kaidan. He is the officer, the valuable stable L2 biotic, and he's your second in command, who was handpicked by Anderson for this mission for a reason.
Add to that what Kirrahe says about how the bomb is only as dependable as the person who sets it...why wouldn't you choose the tech expert to stay with the nuke? And yeah, once the nuke is set, it shouldn't be able to be deactivated, but why would you assume that Saren, with REAPER technology, wouldn't have some unforeseen way of deactivating it? Going back to defend the person with the nuke is logical, and putting Kaidan in that position is the only choice that makes sense to me.
I have to admit, it does prejudice me in some ways when I hear people say that they always choose Ash. It sucks because it's one or the other, but as someone who would REALLY like to see more "Normal Guy" characters in games, knowing that people are blowing him up and proving the devs theory that what people really want are badasses like Zaeed, makes me sad.
To argue (for fun) with what you said.... Anderson didn't handpick him for you. He was originaly part of the crew (and Ashley became part of it) before Shepard's Spectre status. As a Specre (in the first game... the second game basically wrote off being a spectre as nothing and unimportant which is a discussion for another time) you get to choose (according to lore) who you want (obviously the game devs do that for you). They only people who can supersede your authority are the three councilors (and they don't like to get involved with Spectre business). As much as Udina ****es.... he is insignificant (the only reason he can lock the Normandy is because the council allows it)... as well as Anderson (who admits that Shepard answers to nobody but the council). You don't even have a chain of command. You can tell that Rear Admiral to screw off and you tell the reporter that you are only alliance in name so that you can use the Normandy.
Now that you have the Normandy there isn't a need to even be called "Commander". It seems more an honorary title than anything... personaly I want to be called Spectre Shepard, Agent Shepard or Spectre Agent Shepard in the next game.
As for Zaeed... I hope they don't include him in the next game. He is too cliche' and over the top of a character. It is to the point where it is annoying. Where other characters seem to have character flaws that are believable they make his flaw that he is too "hard". He seems to be a character for 20 year-old college boys who have little understanding of reality.
You know, that second paragraph was always in my line of thinking about the whole regs issue with Kaidan. She's a friggin Spectre. She's outside the chain of command, really. If that's the only thing that she's doing "out of line" I don't think that the Council would care. But as Sage pointed out in her fic, it would probably have many more ramifications for Kaidan and Alliance personel likely wouldn't see it the same way.
Even if Anderson didn't handpick him for the Shepard, Kaidan
was selected to serve on the most high-tech experimental ship in the Alliance fleet and possibly in Citadel space (apart from Sovreign). So I think Teen's intent still stands.
Nick
They just don't know how to get out of the house and flirt. If they did then the would find girls that are into some weird stuff (just like guys are).
All they need to do is 1) excersize an hour every morning and 2) go do something which forces them to socialize. It isn't difficult to do... it just takes a little effort. Most of the typical male nerds think that the only place to meet someone is at a bar or dance club (which rarely happens). Honestly... most people meet their significant other at work, school or at some social event not centered around alcohol and loud music.
And once again, if they
learned something from the male LI characters BioWare makes that women like (Carth, Alistair, Kaidan) perhaps they would be more successful as well.

Also, not all female gamers are fat and floppy.
Definitely not. My friend and I are both gamers

EDIT: I think we need a Kaidan photo to counteract the off topic one
