Kaidan Alenko Support Thread Part 2

When I began ME2, I felt lost without Shepard's crew from ME1. I really felt her sense of isolation, although she's an incredibly strong woman and she adapts to the situation. But not without a lot of pain, even if it's internal. It's definitely there. When Horizon came, I was so happy to see Kaidan and then I felt incredibly hurt about his reaction. Then his email came later and for me that just made it worse.
But after stepping back a bit and after reading comments on this thread, I can really understand Kaidan's reaction. It's a very human response and an extremely emotional one. Shepard is stand-offish but I think it's because she's just barely holding it together herself. I have a lot more understanding about Kaidan's email too. (which I hated so much previously that I wrote a fanfic in which Miranda actually composed the message, under a directive from TIM..) As much as a part of me still hates Horizon, I hold onto the hope that it was such an intense moment because it's a very potent and intense relationship. And I hope that there is a reunion in ME3 that makes the relationship even stronger than ever.
As for Shepard being "unfaithful" in ME2, I just can't see my Shepard having a romance with more than one person in so short a time, let alone two crew members. This is my personal take on the way I see Shepard though; your mileage may vary. I don't think she's the type of person to form quick attachments. I don't think she would take the whole fraternization thing lightly either. Having multiple romances just trivializes them for me. (I'm 100 percent for Kaidan anyway.) I think that it would be out of character for her to have something going on with a second crew member. Crazy lady that I am, I did want to see the Garrus/ Shepard romance but I had to make an entire new Shepard for that and played ME1 with no romance at all and then romanced Garrus. (It was torture avoiding Kaidan!!!)

^ enjoying this line of "supportive armor" conversation.
but with ME2 writing: i'm going to have to disagree. it is good - it's just not consistent. IMO, that is the problem.
take the al Jilani interview - brilliant. i loved the garrus and tali missions. omg, krogan genophage stuff - so hard to choose. so many awesome dilemmas. i'm still pondering the geth, though for now i went with re-writing. i may go and retcon that for kyrie.
i guess what i'm saying is that the writing was still superb BUT it felt like with so many paths, some ended abruptly. horizon felt like a very rocky road. i want to think it's leading somewhere, but it was like a romance super highway turned into a goat trail.
so yeah, i'm going to have to stand up and defend the writing because i don't think one can say if it was overall good or bad until the final chapter is written. but for now, it certainly appears inconsistent because some threads got so frayed and others got strengthened and it was all very inconsistent. again, i think the final test is how it all weaves together in the end.
i guess in a week we'll see some of the weaving - looking forward to liara DLC is a major way

No. I don't think the Shepard makes quick attachements either--femShep at least, or not mine (Kimbri or Kara)Ariaya wrote...

But, like you said, she's barely holding it together. The one thing that she searches for, finds, and loses in quite quick succession for is her reunion with Kaidan.
I think that might just push her over an edge. I've found Kara to pick renegade options more often than she did before. And she now hides her face with a mask so she doesn't have to spend as much energy keeping up appearances of how Horizon didn't hurt her like it did.
I could see her falling into something with Garrus most easily--especially if he wasn't quite so...awkward or if he offered one iota of comfort to her after Horizon. (Instead, he puts her off for calibrations when she needs him the most). But he's a friend, he's familiar and he's there. He followed her to help her with her mission when she needed him, no questions asked. So yeah. I could see it.
Jacob not as much (weird voice or priiize aside). Thane--well, he comes on board almost too late. If he were already onboard when Horizon happens, I could see it. Otherwise, I can't see it unless Shepard has completely give up on Kaidan--which is harder to do when he reached out with his e-mail.
Anyways, my $2 worth (cause its much longer than 2 cents)

huh, i'm not allowed to have an opinion on the writing in me. seriously?
no, that wasn't my intention in what i said. i simply want to defend ME2's writing.
let me try saying it a different way. ME1 was a very linear novel. ME2 was like a collection of short stories with a theme. some of the short stories were awesome, but some seemed weaker. i have a hard time saying that the short story collection was worse than the novel, because they're just very different styles for one and the overall narrative of the trilogy is not done yet. i, personally, cannot form an opinion.
but i'm sorry that i implied that no one else should. clearly, that's silly.

Someone said that ME2 was like a bunch of episodes of a TV drama. So that goes along with what you are saying about the short stories.sagequeen wrote...

And while ME1 was linear, then there were all of these somewhat inconsequential to the whole story side quests. ME2 seems to tie them into the "Episode" stories better.
But we probably ought to be careful and not get too OT from Kaidan.

Since I talked about other LI's up above, I'll put in the Kaidan vs. Jacob pic.

Sage, that is the best explanation for the writing in ME2 I think I've ever seen. It's not, for me, that the writing isn't good, it's that the editor of the collection, so to speak, didn't tie all the stories together in a way my brain processes particularly well. It's got some spectacular individual pieces though.

Best metaphor ever for ME2.

i'll say it again - i did not mean to stomp on anyone else's opinion. i simply like ME2 a lot, though in a different way from ME1. i will defend either of them. but i understand that not everyone feels as i do.

Beautiful job again, Sage. I'm too lazy to log into ff.net to leave a review tonight though and I hate giving anonymous ones.
