@Geirahod: so do I...oh look a darkened room and they are alone...

@Sage: Hi!

Wow everyone has so many Sheps, I have my original original that went no further than ME1, Jennifer who I play to death over and over and my renegade Naomi who I think I only got past the first mission with, then stopped.

Well, that's exactly my problem, Love. :/ I have at least three characters for each ME1 LI, just so I can cheat on them. Then I have my loyal characters and the characters that are saving themselves for ME2 and ME3 characters. I've planned ahead. xD

^ This.  I want to do that too, and I'm on the way so far...except 1) I felt guilty for cheating on Kaidan, and I think I would feel bad for doing that to the other characters as well, and 2) That takes a lot of gaming time I don't have.

Part of me wants to make several playthroughs, with each of the love interests, with some cheating involved to see the reactions.  And some faithfuls, but also some non-commited Shepards for ME3 LIs.  So far, I have 3 ME1 FemSheps; 2 of those I beat ME2 with (but accidently deleted one playthrough, incidently the one I'm retconning, so I'm lucky), and working on the 3rd FemShep.  Also beat ME1 with 1 MShep, playing ME2 with him.

But I also don't have time to replay several Shepards; the quickest ME1 playthrough I've done (no sidequests, just main missions) was about 12 hours.  Multiply that by a few, and it's a sad amount of gaming time.  And if I want to import them all to ME3....oy.

So I think I'll just stick with alternates, such as loading from saves from already-made Shepards, and beating the game again, then importing those to ME3.

@ shotgun--Hello!  Welcome to the thread.  There's a group called the KAAS (Kaidan Alenko Appreciation Society) you can join, also a Kaidan and Ashley DLC Wishlist thread that you can contribute your (non-spoiler) ideas to, so BioWare sees (that's in the General Discussion thread).  Also, there's a support group, which my sig banner links to.
@sage--love your fic, feel bad for Garrus though.  :(

Really? You can watch it on Youtube if you don't want to actually leave him on Virmire in-game.

Oh, you guys get what I mean. Establishing a dichotomy between male and female players is practically the only way I can reduce some of the biases in this survey during analysis.

I've looked at alternative ways of conducting such surveys, but it seems that Google Docs is the way to go...

Ah huh.  Tell me, are you naturally a passive-aggressive misogynist, or only when asking why characters you don't like are popular amidst their fans on the internet?

Whoh. Did I ever say that I hated Kaidan? I just don't care much for the guy; that's all. Have any of my posts specifically bashed Kaidan? No. In fact, I have agreed with you guys on numerous occassions that the reason why guys don't like Kaidan is because he doesn't fit into an archetype that guys like to see in their media.

But, something does tell me that girls appreciate Kaidan more than guys do. Regardless, you have to admit at least that. The numbers say so.

I didn't say you hated him.  I said you didn't like him.  Last night, you said you couldn't understand why he was popular - which, as I doubt you know, is what people have come in here and said to try to get a rise out of us.

You keep implying that Kaidan is bland or somehow less awesome than the other characters in all men's eyes, and that somehow sex is important.  It' a good thing that you included gender, apparently, because only three men voted 10 on Kaidan... a statement which unto itself implies that the women's opinions are unimportant and/or that Kaidan is still somehow inferior.

Dunno.  Maybe it's bad wording on your part; maybe it's bad reading comprehension on mine.  I'm merely curious what you're looking for, because the sooner we help you find it, the sooner we can get back to talking about Kaidan's personality, hair bumps, ass, and penis without the, "but why do women like Kaidan?! :o"

... and out of curiosity, did you post your poll in the Fight for the Love thread?  I thought from what I'd read that (orientationunknown) men and (orientationunknown) women who like gay men in their entertainment seem to like Kaidan, too.

I always hate this question. The answer to why people like different things than other people is that they are different people.

Allow me to clarify. Women, from what I saw in the results of the last survey before this one, gave higher marks for certain characters and lower marks for other ones. Same with men. I am merely implying here that people, depending on their gender, tend to have different opinions about the characters that seems to follow a distinct pattern depending on that gender.

No, I am not saying that the female ratings are unimportant; I am saying that asking a person his/her sex can unveil many of the mysteries to how certain people view certain characters. Establishing the dichotomy between female and male players sheds some light in that respect.

I think it's pretty obvious that he was written as a love interest first and foremost and as a friend to MaleShep as a distant second.  That is the main reason more women than men are fans.  Of course, there are guys who do like him despite less friendship content, and women who are put off by his being made specifically for romancing.  I really hope that his writers address this in ME3, if he's a team mate.

^ what Teen said, XX. I think part of the stats will be off because of the gender of the Shep played and if ME1 was ever played. While I appreciate fave character polls, I think they're always going to be a little off. Most women play as women, that changes the game dynamic, thus, changes the perception of the character. I liked Jacob playing maleshep, not so much as femshep, for example.

I don't think XX55XX's intent was to be offensive; he's been courteous since he's arrived in here. I think he's asking for knowledge. Personally, I don't care if someone likes Kaidan or not. I want them to treat me respectfully and the character that I like respectfully, which XX55XX has done IMO. I haven't seen any name calling happening.

Honestly, I think it stems from the fact that we do get occasional trolls and jerks here. Sometimes that makes us very wary of people that come in asking questions.

Ah, that's a good explanation, I daresay. Might help me design the next survey a little better.

As a sidenote, I always play as a girl in video games whenever I can, but... for some reason, I always prefer to play as a dude in Mass Effect. For example, nearly every character I have created for Dragon Age is a girl in some form or another. And I do like the romance between Alistair and the Warden because I try to maintain a female perspective whenever I am roleplaying as a female character, even though I think that Alistair is quite a sissy at times.

Haha, I have beaten ME2 three times:  first on casual with my Adept Paragon Gwen, then again on Normal, but I had replayed the character in ME1 to change her background from Colonist to Spacer, and tweaked her face, and finally as a new game plus on Insanity, and in that one I changed her class to Soldier.  That one is now my "perfect" save, with all N7 missions completed, and all choices that I would want for her made.

My renegade characters have all barely made it past Horizon.  I really like my Paragon, and I have a fleshed out backstory for her, so it feels weird being any other Shepard.  Plus I'm pretty sure I'm in love with Gwen Shepard.  Almost as much as she loves Kaidan.

Thats really true. I didnt like Ash as Maleshep when I played Femshep then she felt like a BF.
I liked Thane more playing as Maleshep for some reason.

@Teen: Sound like me with Jen- all the choices I want made and all missions complete. I have given her a backstory too, writing a fic on it, but I have serious writers block on the second part. Anyone who's willing to have me fire ideas at them and discuss with me so i can get back on track is welcome to PM!

I actually find it difficult to play other Sheps now as I'm so used to being Paragon and acting based on the background I have created. So thats anotherp layer never getting that paramour achievement. I tried a mshep once to get it, didn't even get to rescuing Jacob because I couldn't get one that looks nice. Maybe if I didn't have kaidan to compare him to, but none of those combinations came even close to Mr Alenko. Silly kaidan....gorgeous Kaidan...*wha?*

Okay.  So Kaidan's fans on the BioWare network who happen to notice your poll and are inclined to filling it out are mostly women.

But what does that have to do with character popularity?  Why is it important?  What light does it shed?  Did you start out trying to unravel the player-sex dynamic to the enjoyment of the characters' writing, or did you only get interested when Kaidan exceeded your expectations?  If not, why does it seem you are predominantly hanging out in our thread?  Would you care to tell me about your mother...?

(... sorry.  I'm a psychologist by trade, a sociologist by hobby, and naturally curious.  You haven't annoyed me, just some of your phrasing is uncomfortable and itchy.)

Ash's romance had a bit of a problem with the romance triggers. In order to not romance Ashley as Male Shepard, you have to tell her she's out of line when she talks about the aliens on the ship.

That was the playthrough I was trying to romance her aswell lol,

I dunno maybe with me if the person seems too obvious as a LI or it turns to all that flirting too quickly. It feel like "OK! I get it you're a LI, but maybe I just want to talk to you as a friend" I don't like the forced feeling. I thinks thats why I didnt enjoy the ME2 (Male) LI's as much and why I prefer Kaidan, to me it felt like yeah they're interested in each other, but its slow and doesnt feel forced at all

Well... To be quite honest with you, I used the female/male dichotomy because that was the only way I could split the population and account for certain discrepancies. I might add sexual orientation in a later variation of this survey, but it's difficult to really think of any other factors that may be in play here other than the two which I have mentioned.

In the last survey, which took place six months ago, Kaidan's average with females was nearly 1.9 points higher than Kaidan's average amongst males. That is a huge discrepancy, and I noticed it when I was plugging in the data into SPSS. I don't know the precise z-score for the probability of that occuring by chance, but no doubt, the chance of that occuring randomly would have been less than a single percentage point.
