I had totally forgotten about that. I think I picked up on it subconciously, however, since i thought that was what was going on. I just didn't realized they'd actually said it anywhere

@Sage, that reminds me of the scene where Shepard and Ash are crouching to look at the citadel from the viewport. Kaidan looks like he took the opportunity to get Shep back for all her gorming at his butt by checking out hers!

I don't think we should expect him to drop everything for us at all. He's obviously a special agent that has an 'in' with the Council and Anderson. He'd do more good staying where he is and letting Shepard do her thing. Because if there's a war with the reapers, then the Council will have to be convinced of the reapers. I think that's his job atm (Anderson gives a clue if you drop in after Horizon, "he wasn't able to provide any connection to the reapers though").

I think that is what he can't put aside. His job is absolutely critical to the survival of galactic life, just like Shepard's is.

So you don't think that they maybe is "maybe I'll be willing to work things out, maybe I won't."
You more interpret it as "maybe our duty to the galaxy as a whole will align with our hearts and maybe it won't."
Am I getting that right?

Neither. It's "maybe we could pick things back up when we find the chance... if you'll still have me".

It's definitely not the first one. Why would he apologize if he was only "maybe" willing to work things out? There's nothing to indicate that he's adding conditionals to picking the relationship back up.

Think about the letter. He starts by saying how hard it was to try to move on and how much he failed moving on. He wouldn't be able to stand losing her again. He worries about her safety with Cerberus because of what they've done. Why would he tack a heartless send-off onto that? It makes no sense for him to say something to the effect of "well maybe it'll work out but I doubt it". He's hesitant to assume that they can continue after what he said on Horizon but he desperately wants to be back with Shepard. Still, there's that little bit of hope that maybe they can continue when conditions are more favorable for the both of them and if he hasn't ruined the relationship forever.

I think that's got to be some of the mose optomistic stuff I've ever seen you write, Fort! 
I've always taken the message as a leap of faith on his part.  But there are so many people that have said that the letter angered them or made Horizon worse.  I've never been able to see their POV.

I was curious on your take on it since I tend to be overly optomistic at times.  You tend to have a differing opinions on things at times than I do.  So I was curious on your interpretation with your more "realist" POV--if I was perhaps being too hopeful at what he meant.
I think your interpretation is actually even a little more optomistic than mine.

I'd still think of that as being him leaving a way out.  Not for himself, but for Shepard.  I don't think he's had a way out for himself regarding Shepard since... well, possibly as early as the post-Virmire debrief, but at least since Ilos.

I took it as him being considerate, I guess?

Then there's the interpretation that his email was lame etc and that he was avoiding Shepard so he wrote a stupid letter. I don't get this either. What's he supposed to do? Meet with her? Someone who is associating with terrorists while he is an agent for the council? No, that wouldn't look bad at all. Part of being in the service is putting others before yourself. Having an illicit affair with a known Cerberus affiliate would be incredibly selfish. 

I dunno. I just have to respectfully disagree with people that took a negative interpretation to the email. 

Edit @ FireEye: That's kind of what I was trying to say, but he left it up to Shepard. He's not leaving himself a way out; I think he's telling her he wants to be with her only if she'll have him.

I guess I always took the maybe as "maybe I'll be willing to put my heart on the line again." That with that line about not knowing who either of them are anymore--he's in internal turmoil. And he still thinks she's "with" Cerberus.

The I don't know part was a "I don't know any of the things I thought I knew, so I don't know if I can make promises."

I think that its obvous that he loves her deeply. And my Kimbri Shepard, being an optomist was certain that they start again if she could only talk things out with him.

...*thinks about it a bit more* That perhaps his reticence (sp?) is more out of uncertainty of her feelings/self-protection.

So I do think I agree with you on that.

I think that's the female jealousy thing coming out. It's a normal reaction though. Honestly, Lilith was the one that got me. She gave him looks. I saw it. <_<

LOL, both "He's Gay!" and "Didn't Want A Threesome!" are on there.  I really did feel silly typing that stuff out.  I still can't believe there are people who freely admit to hating characters because they sound like another RPG character or because they quote poetry.

I liked the email. For me the last few lines, show that he's been thinking about them maybe pursuing a relationship again, but doesnt know if they will and how soon due to responsibilities and if Shepard even wants to. Maybe the "I don't know" is also because at the time of writing the letter he himself isnt sure what he wants from Shepard, should he clear the air and leave it as friends, or should he attempt to start a relationship he spent two years struggling to get over. They can't just dive back in after everything. He's changed over the two years and so has Shepard considering she's with Cerberus, it wont be just picking up where they left off even if he (and Shep)  wants to.

Just throwing in my two cents, didnt bother thinking too deeply about it when I first read it. Just the Devs letting me know my relationship still has a chance in 3, if I want it, I don't think they thought it would offend anyone futher if they were upset after horizon.
