I find the lack of same-sex romance to be one of the weirdest things about the ME universe. One would assume that in the future, sexual orientation would be less of an issue than it is now, given how much culture has come to change re: same-sex relationships in just the last 20 years or so. So give it 100+ years and there's no reason to believe that same-sex orientation would be much an issue anymore. Add in that you have the asari, a whole race who are "same sex" to start with, and it makes less sense. I see NO reason why Shepard couldn't be homosexual or bisexual for humans or non-asari aliens except that it's an imposed character decision Shep by the devs. It's truly bizarre.
I *like* that femshep is an empowered woman saving the galaxy. That makes the game SO awesome to me. I'm sure a lot of people would like Shep to be a strong, empowered person of whatever sexual orientation they so chose, not "must be straight because it's a shooter." It is just too weird. I am straight and I find hetero romance the most interesting to follow. If it was in the game, I don't know if I'd ever play a gay or bisexual character. But I find it jarring all the same to know that Shep *can't* be gay or bisexual. it does sort of ruin the illusion of full roleplay, just to know that choice isn't there.
edit: actually, i take it back. if i could, i think i'd play a renegon infiltrator and romance miri over garrus. i feel bad that miri got my stupid-head renegade maleshep
