Especially we females.  The romance with Kaidan was consummated.  Yet we are wanting more!  So I think that belies that argument right there.
Perhaps for younger players who can't hold a relationship beyound a couple months in real life, or for males with wandering attention to begin with (not all males, just the ones that stick with a choice) get bored.

Well, time to get back to work...

Sure, I agree with that. Kaidan and Shepard should have a happy ending. But I want them to work damn hard for it. ¬_¬

That goes for any relationship though. I suppose you can tell what kind of stories I like from my fanfictions. I'm all for love, but love never comes without complications. Love is a part of life. Life comes with A LOT of complications. Just something I'd like to see reflected in a game that otherwise has rather realistic interaction between characters and environments.

EDIT: Do you think it's possible that the players choices throughout the trilogy would affect the end of the romances? Because I can sorta see where all my relationships would go in that case. >_O

I'm sure all of us here are fine with complications in the romances. Hell, we already had it on Horizon (although we don't really like how it was executed) - and we still want Kaidan. There's nothing wrong with a rocky road, and in many cases it makes the romance all the sweeter when things shape up. Having romance conmplications and a happy ending aren't mutually exclusive - the former can lead to the latter.

I'm always one for a great happy ending. I think that is one reason too why I stopped hanging around the DA boards. None of them seemed to like happy endings (plus Kaidan is tons better anyway).

I want a great conclusion to the romance, but I also fear they might pull a sacrificial type scene. I would really not like that. "Hey I'm back, I love you. Now I will go die in some heroic way." No thank you.

Some quotes from Chris Avellone, lead writer for KOTOR 2, on romance:

CA:

*snip*

once a relationship is consummated, you are now in
danger of boring the player.
Because it’s consummated, that problem is
solved, and in a dramatic situation that’s not necessarily what you want
to happen. It just seemed like more tension could be had when there’s
something flawed there, or there’s a disconnect

I'm probably in the minority here, but this is why I like the -idea- of Horizon.  Since I went into ME2 99% spoiler-free, I was afraid that the relationship might stagnate, from a gameplay perspective.  So I was glad they put a wedge between them, and am optimistic (especially after LotSB) that the payoff will be worth it, in the end.

But 'meh' to rest of what he said.  Image IPB

Kaidan's an L2 biotic (not to mention with the even more rare circumstance of not having as bad of headaches as the other L2s) with a very well decorated leadership history. He also has technical skills. You can't really replace him. He also obviously gets along better with aliens. If Shepard dies in battle, Kaidan would easily be the best choice to replace Shepard against Saren.

Also, he's not as psychotic as the other L2s.

As much as we love Ashley, my Shepard is a Soldier - she can handle Ash's role on her own, but Kaidan's skillset is more useful to her on her mission and to the Alliance in general.  It didn't make the choice any easier for me, but it made it practical.  (Biotic Shepards might have an easier time with choosing Ashley, for similar reasons).

Of course, my Shepard wanted to go back after she picked up Kaidan, bomb or no bomb.  :crying:

Well, this is why Horizon didn't upset me very much. I can't help but feel like it was necessary. I almost liked being shouted at by Kaidan. >_O

Eh.  I would have been more impressed if you had kept your old crew and your old ship and your old love interest (add a couple of more characters for variety, but still keep it below 12 and add the final few in ME3) in the second game and kept the story flowing.  Sure, have a couple of rocky conversations or even flat-out fights that compromise your relationship or the mission (depending on how you play them).

Heck, you want to cut Shepard loose from the Alliance?  Have her and her people kicked out for mutiny (but not executed solely out of respect for what she did).  Have Kaidan or Ashley broken up about it, and grouchy for the first few conversations and implying that their breaking regs was part of the problem.

Dunno.  I don't believe in the "will they/won't they?" standard of media writing, because you can make it interesting after they did.  Life doesn't end after sex, goshdarnit!

I do agree that the suicide mission was kinda worthless.  They should have attached actual random variables to who lived and who died, and make it so you could never get a perfect score.  But I may still have a love/hate thing going for Virmire.  <_<

The idea is alright, the execution not so much.

There's been enough drama for the rest of Shepard and Kaidan's life and the trilogy isn't even over yet. They deserve a happy ending. Image IPB

That would have been really intriguing, character development and story wise. But Bioware wanted to blow the SR-1 up, so that's what we got (didn't someone post a quote about that?).

I'm not suggesting a "will they/won't they." More of a "do or don't ****s. ¬_¬" Make sense...? No, didn't think so. I can't describe it properly, but if everything goes off without a hitch, and I don't count small disagreements as hitches, then I'd be pissed. I mean, let them be jealous or something, throw in some commitment issues.

Or just scrap the romances. >:/

Urh, no. Don't do that BW. O_O I'll just stop posting for a while. I'm in a sh*tty mood. ¬_¬

That kind of talk makes me mad! Just the idea of "When a relation ship is all settled and happy, it's boring." Hell to the know! But I suppose that in a trilogy that is Mass Effect, drama is a given. But we better have our happy ending or **** will hit the fan!

Would you guys think less of me if I disagreed with this...?

I was so pissed off when no one died on my first suicide mission. Killed the drama... So, I intentionally made a playthrough where I treated everyone like sh*te and made sure they all died. >:/

I'm not completely against happiness, but when things end with an "all was well" or "happily ever after" I just wanna shoot something to ruin the mood. >:(

Nope I felt similar. I made every effort to make sure my team stayed alive, but once they did I was dissapointed and thought it was kinda dull. Its a suicide mission and every single person managed to stay alive seriously? Seriously wow.

I really liked the banter between Liara and Shepard in LotSB. It could be interpreted as just old friends who care about each other, or lovers who are comfortable together. I really hope the writers understand that being in love does NOT have to equal boring. The things we love about the love interests in ME wouldn't go away if our Shepard is in a relationship with them, and was allowed to have banters that acknowledge the relationship.

I had heard that Chris Avellone had said that stuff before, but not read the quotes. I think he's a really creative and interesting writer, but he probably feels self conscious about writing a full fledged romance, and he doesn't want to admit it. I'm sure he realizes that full fledged romances don't *have* to be boring once they are consummated, and it would be subverting the norm by having a romance continue throughout the game...but writing romances in GRIMDARK video games is not "cool" or edgy. Heavens forfend he gets put in the same category as David Gaider, amirite???

Anyway, I do think it's possible to have a current love interest *and* maintain the fun in the relationship. I actually hope it's addressed in both DA2 and ME3.

All of the "romances" in KOTOR II (besides Disciple, what a surprise) had a certain darkness to it. Atton had a very dark past. And there's literally, not even in the cut content  an actual happy romance ending with him. Either there's something horribly dark or Atton just hasn't revealed his feelings yet...how depressing.

Visas? She was broken. Admittedly, the romance with her was more...mutual, and in a way, happier than Atton's. But Visas is pretty much irredeemably affected by what happened with Nihlus. Any relationship with her would have severe psychological problems to go through.

Handmaiden has to turn on her former master, and in some cases, even the other handmaidens. Though her romance was definitely the least troubled. I always thought Handmaiden was kind of boring. Like Disciple.

Disciple...Disciple was too much of an opposite to Atton.

I wonder what's in store for Kaidan's romance.

The Shepard Project has been renamed:  Persephone Rising.  TSP was always supposed to be the series' name, not the title for the first part.  And now we finally decided on a permanent title.

I can see some foreshadowing that some of the romances are doomed in some way. Those would be Thane and Jack. They're both dying a lot quicker than Shepard. But at least there are hints of upcoming tragedy. Those would make sense to be tragic.

For other romances, there isn't that kind of indication. Though I'm crossing my fingers with the VS romances because Horizon really screwed with the whole thing.

Jack only kind of. We don't really know for sure. The upgrade thingy is ambiguous. It could be indicative that Jack will eventually die (or you know...become a vegetable and/or more crazy) from the neutral degeneration, but at the same time it may not be saying that.

Thane, of course, Shepard knows what she's going into from the start.

Let's see. What is foreshadowed in Kaidan's romance? Right from the top I think of one thing. The Alliance disapproving of the relationship.

Manaan was beautiful.

As for KOTOR II. The "romances" were so subtle and off-screen that I prefer they hadn't included it at all. It's a little frustrating when Atton is obviously into your exile but you can't express interest in him too.

I was happy with how the romance with Atton started.  then he would talk to everyone BUT Exile about his feelings for her.  then it went no where.
I agree.  I would rather it was left out completely.  then again, i don't like KOTOR II and have struck it completely from my personal cannon.

I would be fine with there being different romantic outcomes via some algorhythm like they used in ME2 for the suicine mission or a la DA:O.
That loyal Shepards would get the happy endings with their LI's
Others may have to work harder--like would have to have made xyx decisions along the way to get the happy ending, but they could also get a somewhat happy ending--like an elf female with Alistair if you did certain conversation options with him at a couple of points.
this is the only scenerio where I could accept there being a tragic ending--if there was a 100% happy ending available for Kaidan and Shepard--i.e. marriage or being engaged to be married.

With Jack, she reminds me a lot of Morrigan where she might not be able to stand the idea of being in love and freaking out and ultimately leaving.

I do wonder about the Alliance and the fraternization thing. Shepard isn't Alliance anymore so that snag is highly likely to be over with. The continued Cerberus associations is whats seems to be the major issue atm; somehow they have to find a way to make keeping/discarding the base and/or supporting Cerberus make sense in regards to the relationship.

One way that I suspect they might handle this is by having the Alliance completely shut the VS out due to... something. It could be about the reapers, about Shepard or about something else. Or they could have Cerberus actually come out as being part of the Alliance. I'd rather the first one because I hate Cerberus that much :?

ME2 is supposed to be the "dark chapter" in the trilogy, so logic would dictate that things should start looking up for Shepard in ME3. Hopefully, that includes the romance department.

I thought the not-so-happy endings in DA:O fit perfectly within a dark fantasy world. But I also think that's where they should stay.

I agree. You don't give the end of a trilogy an intentionally dark and tragic ending or people will end up really pissed off (I'm looking at you, Matrix trilogy...) :innocent:

This.
This is why we hopefully will have a happy ending, that is the nature of trilogies. And Shepard deserves some love after saving the galaxy.

Try the first page of the Ash thread.  They have a TON of linked vids there.  I had to go raid it to get dialogue.
