Actually, if the exposure altered the DNA.... Which, given that the other effects are cancer, it does.... biotics are more than likely inheritable. Or at least, this is the conclusion my molecular biologist husband came to while arguing with me. It IS a mutation, after all.

The main effect I can see is that there would be a lot of stillborn or miscarried fetuses until a viable child was born, however.

Assuming Shep's eggs were resurrected along with her, Kaidan and Shep could have lots of biotic little rugrats.

This is the WIKI on biotics and it does not mention any altering of DNA ... the quote above is direct from the game so  .. Like I said ...  Canon, it doesn't Inherit...

Fan Fic ... it can happen.

Biotic Rugrats?

Shep: "No flying in the house!  I don't care what Granma Samara taught you!"
Kaidan: "What have I told you about levitating your classmates?  You put her down, right now!"

The fact that it produces cancer MEANS it alters DNA, Night.  The only reason I can think of that biotics' DNA alteration would not be transmittable to offspring is that the DNA alterations render the human biotic sterile to begin with.  Which would explain Miranda's sterility.  And no children with Jack, Jacob OR Kaidan or a Biotic Shep.
The biotics entry on the Wiki is REALLY uninformative.

I took it from the game Sia - and the ones who get brain cancer may have altered DNA - But the die- it may be why they die... I do agree about the sterility though since only asari are natural biotics - since there is some other form of reproduction is in play (partial cloning).

Besides - it's okay to disagree with me- you are entitled to your opinion... This is mine.

(and partial cloning is supposed to have a question mark after it cause it's supposition)

LOL, I argue with everyone, Night. When I didn't chuck it all to concentrate on writing as a career, I was in training at different points in my life as a journalist and as a lawyer.

I have no Kaidan hugs to give you, though. :(

A mutation in you DNA can be inherited. Though the probability of passing it on is quite low, I would think.
Which type of chromosome is affected? Is it dominant or recessive?^_^

Who cares, really.

The question of whether biotics are inheritable in humans will eventually be answered, either ingame or in future Mass Effect books or other media, and it really doesn't matter what science says, it's completely up to the imagination of the writers. If we can accept faster than light travel and element zero, it's not a huge stretch to believe that biotics can be passed on as a trait.

Not that it really matters in the larger scheme of things, but I really hope that it is never confirmed that Shepard is sterile, either by resurrection or by virtue of being a biotic. I don't think that having children should be a focus, but it was kind of depressing that my Grey Wardens in Dragon Age were extremely unlikely to have kids. It's not like they had that much to look forward to anyway, but that was an extra kick in the pants.

Thanks for the hug

That is fine Sia...

I was at the clinic and I couldn't check but I am home now and I checked with my "Published" retired cancer studying Mom to find out the Validity of you statement 'because it causes cancer it alters the DNA'... She said that only the Cancer cells them selves have altered DNA ... not the other cells ... and that there would have to have be a predisposition to it.  She said it would be highly unlikely that the nodes in the same body (ie Shepard) would cause it either or then any pregnant woman that was near a boitic would be exposed.  She said this is all based on the game descriptions.  And that she would actually have to do a study on the nodes themselves (she what happens when you ask a research scientist questions... they over investigate) She also said that it is also possible that the Cancer itself would cause altered DNA ... but I didn't want to get into that discussion.

(The "Published" is to make her happy ... she loves that she was published *shrugs* not really important to us lowly 911 operaters)

I'm sure I over simplified my husband's explanation.   But... what if the cancer is because only SOME cells mutated and biotics is because ALL cells mutated?

I know what it means for a researcher to be "published," my dad was a physicist.  ^_^ It's HUGE.

She said it doesn't work that way... what do I know... I can get a cop or firetruck or ambulance to your location and I can deliver a baby over the phone ...

Okay I did work in a lab while I was in college ... but we were doing a study of regrowing nerves... with snakes ... so yeah I didn't do the cancer stuff... the snakes were easier to let go of ,... if you know what I mean.

Edit: for Biotic God.. to stay on topic of course ... we were talking about Biotics and Kaidan but this post didn't reflect that so.....

Slightly off topic: my mom and stepdad both think games are a waste of brain activity.      v.v
And yet here you guys are talking about how biotics could potentially affect reproduction and discussing chromosomes, cancer cells, and mutations with an enthusiasm that I didn't see in my high school biology classes.
I think it's awesome. ^.^  Hooray for proving them wrong!

Well... it has underlying premise as a reward, Brody:  sexy-times with Kaidan.

So... intelligent and STILL gutterific.

A bit late guys, but here's my thoughts~

I have A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, English Language, English Literature and (for some reason) Critical Thinking; but you guys still put me to shame with your enthusiasm. >_O

@Night, your study on nerve regrowth interests me. My doctor's stonewall me whenever I ask them what can be done. ¬_¬

To be on topic: biotic mutations really ought effect all your DNA. You are exposed in utero, when your cells are all primitve. If you are still an embryo, it would make sense for it to be a full re-write, so to speak. Especially if we are talking sci-fi. ;) But I don't know if de novo mutations are any more or less inheritable than any other alleles. However, something tells me that it would be easier for women to pass on the gene, what with our XX chromosomes and such.

Unfortunately, genetic mutation is often known to cause sterility, but I'm so forgetful, I might just not remember in my fanfictions. ;D
