I"m worried about ME3 in that we already have 9 (10 if you count Kelly) LI's on the books already.  BW wants to make each game stand alone, which might mean more choices.  Ugh.  Its not that I'm against that, just that it was painfully obvious that they probably have only a certain amount of time and money to put in to the romance angle of the game.  And whereas in ME1 it was divided amongst 3 characters and was full and meaningful, then in ME2 it was divided amongst 6 or 7 new characters--making it short and not satisfying.  And if they add more characters into the mix...  Image IPB

I think about this a lot. And then I think about the fact that I'm a minority in every sense in this game with my decisions and my likes and dislikes. And then I look at what the majority players got (romances for characters that originally non-romances, more shootah, *huge* focus on popular characters) and I just sigh and sit in my skeptical corner.

Yes. Men, not boys.  And I agree, Jade; I'm really worried about the sheer number of LIs now.  In ME2 we already saw the sacrificing of quality for quantity.  Will it get even worse in ME3 with having to tie off the Kaidan, Ash, and Liara romance arcs as well?
*Ahem*

Isn't Winde just amazing?  I'd much rather stare at that then get depressed thinking about what might happen in ME3.

True point, if Kaidan accused me of being unfaithful after i was totally faithful with my fem shep... there'd be no other way about it, we'd all have to fly out to the company with flaming torches

But im sure they considered all this before they made so many bloody LI's for the second game, theyve given themselves a massive task doh. Unless they hoped we were all crap and killed most of them off for the suicide mission, sorting the problem ourselves. And they must know their are so many crazy obsessed fans that would have slight emotional breakdowns as a result of crap endings...

I really dont know how im gonna wait til late 2011-2012

Oh, and on the subject of men...

And by way of apology for the slight OT deviation:

Give us some satisfying Kaidan in ME3, Bioware. You don't want to make Kaidan look like that, do you? ...do you?

Forget his facial expression, mine would be much sadder :(

Im actually worrying how it will end now. I only got into ME once the second game was realeased, but i can imagine people playing from the first starting ME2 and being like "What!? A freaking cameo? Thats it!" Glad i didnt have to go through that drama

They really do need to let it play out as romances do, no more twists, like him running off with Jack. Let it be boring and consistant!

We were fairly warned... at least, those of us who hung around the forums prior to ME2 were. So Horizon didn't surprise me, but it was incredibly disappointing.

I'm glad I played ME2 first. I knew more or less what was coming.

Edited for a Kaidan hug:

I wonder what my take on ME2 would have been if I played it first.  I almost passed up ME1 because I prefer "traditional" RPGs, and Mass Effect didn't look like it was something I would enjoy, especially after not loving Jade Empire.  But once I did play, and got used to the combat, I really did enjoy the story and setting.

ME2  has better combat, but I don't know if I would have bought it just for that.  The story doesn't impress me, when compared to ME1, although individual missions do have some bright spots.  And, no offense intended to those who like the ME2 romances, but I never really liked ANY video game romances written for female characters before Kaidan in ME1, and I think I would have been annoyed and unimpressed by the choices in ME2 without knowing I was staying faithful to another character.

It's pretty cool to see people who played ME2 first in this thread, though.  Honestly, I'm still thrilled when I see new people posting here, and when I think about how many posters we've had who enjoy Kaidan.  If you had just gone by the old Bioware ME forum, you'd think that nobody liked him or wanted him back.  So good to know we're not alone!

I bought it on a hunch. I don't usually like sci-fi or shooter games, but this one just drew me in.

The VA was done well, the music was great and the first time Kaidan was on screen, well.
ME2 made me want to discover more about his character; why he does what he does and says what he says. I loved the opening scene with him and as a FemShep who did not romance him, Horizon wasn't so bad.
I was thrilled to discover that he is a potential LI in ME1 and bought it after finishing ME2. Playing ME1 second made the romance subplot with Kaidan bittersweet - you know what is in store for them right from the moment Shepard and Kaidan first talk.
I think I'm glad I've never seen the old ME forum, TeenZombie. It's bad enough now with some people constantly going on how Kaidan (or Ash) betrayed their Shepard and "chewed him/her out" for working with Cerberus. I don't want to imagine how it must've been before.

This is why I support M/M romances even though I don't play them. Its a niche, sure, but female gamers are also a minority. If they eliminate romances for not appealing to the majority, we could lose male LIs altogether. Female LIs are more popular to straight males (the majority) as both heteros or lesbians.

What they mean by "standalone" is ambiguous. Can't read the devs mind, but it's more likely that they mean a situation like ME2 where one can play the game, enjoy it, and understand the story well enough, without needing to have played any of the other games. As I see it.

Just finished LotSB as mShep who was faithful to Liara.  Holy cr...ud.  That was worth the 70 or so hours of gameplay as a male character.
And I really  hope that this is like what we can expect of Kaidan DLC if we get it.
SPOILERS AHEAD:

Its a bit ambiguous about what, um, happens in the loft.  For Liara, its fine if a lot happened (her eyes did seem to go dark, although attention isn't brought to it).  She knew that Shepard was being revived.  And she never seemed to lose faith in him.  So though she changed quite a bit in those 2 years, they aren't as far apart as a femShep and Kaidan would be.

I love the bits of dialogue that actually nods to the fact that they both have been through a lot in the past 2 years.  Yet they are willing to work through it.
The kiss at the end of the battle *happy sigh*
And Shepard mentions wanting marriage and lots of little blue children.  I"m so happy for my mShep.  Image IPB

I want all of the above for Kimbri and Kara now.  Well, except I would prefer no quick make up sex at this point in the story.  It works (if that happened) for Liara as I said above.  But there's a lot more hurt and separation between Shepard and Kaidan to just jump that far ahead.  Too much resolved too quickly.  But for the rest of it, I would be absolutely delighted if we got this type of DLC for Kaidan.  Please please please!

EDIT:  Oh!  And I was quite relieved that Liara didn't confront him about Kelly.  So nothing happened with him and Kelly.  I was so afraid that she had date raped him when he had her up for dinner so that she would feed his fish.  Apparently that wasn't the case.  fwew!

I only played ME1 once in preparation for ME2 (hadn't played ME1 originally then found out when ME2 was about to come out that Sbarge voiced Kaidan and I was already huge Carth fan so I just had to play it) and I still feel like I didn't really understand the back story in depth till I went back and played ME1 through a few more times.

I think Liara will be fine simply because of LotSB and she is now set in stone, it's Kai and Ash I am worried about, and that's for many reasons.

Just finished a ME1 playthrough myself.

Had a Vanguard Shep, brought Liara and Kaidan with me against Saren and Sovereign. Damn, but there were geth flying all over the place. Image IPB

I miss that feeling of power biotics used to give you. Nowadays they are stopped by "heavy armored plating"... Image IPB

ME2 has more polished game mechanics and improved graphics, but the story and writing generally don't measure up to ME1.

You're right, it didn't. We'll just have to hope that Bioware will combine the best of both games for ME3.

LotSB did prove that BW still has it in them, I just don't understand why they didn't do a good job with the main story, you know it's sad when Halo Reach has a better and engaging story then ME2 :/

Plus the great fail job they did with Kai raises even more questions that Bioware refuses to answer.

Having finished my mShep story arc (for now), I went back and finally started my Renegade-ish Vanguard Shepard that I have named Kitty.  Image IPB

Gosh.  Its like going home again--having Kaidan there on your team, making comments while in battle and when running around.  We sooo need this in ME3 again.  I've missed him.

Well, Priestly always seems to have new announcements on Mondays. So, I'll check tomorrow and remain optimistic that there will be some sort of DLC announcement. And then it will turn back to pessimism.
