Although this applies to only the subset of Garrus fans that fit this model.  Not all Garrus fans hate on Kaidan; not all people who hate on Kaidan are Garrus fans; and not all Garrus fans who romanced Kaidan and dislike him have cognitive dissonance.

I really like Garrus, though I think it's more of a lust thing, as odd as that sounds. I find him very attractive. I like his personality too but I think his romance is really lacking, though some of the good fanfiction does a great job of filling in the blanks.

I find Kaidan's romance much more compelling because of the buildup before the nookie.

But as to why people hate positive characters ... I don't get it. I have a hard time hating on Jacob despite his horrible femshep interactions because of how he behaves during his loyalty mission. I had to give him mad props for hating how his father treated the crew, particularly the women.

I was wondering if it had something to do with Kaidan being the only romancable male in ME1.  From comments, I got the impression that a lot of people who wanted to romance Garrus romanced Kaidan instead because he was there (for the achievement, because they accidentally triggered the romance, or because they wanted a romance even if they didn't want Kaidan, and so were "stuck with him").  I thought this might have led to a cognitive dissonance backlash, particularly after romancing Garrus was possible.  Horizon was unlikely to have helped matters.

That reminds me...  regardless of the whole Garrus thing, I've noticed certain trends with people outside of the fandom when it comes to Horizon.  Those who liked Kaidan in ME1 usually give him the benefit of the doubt, whether or not they stay loyal, and still like his character overall.  Those who didn't like him in ME1, usually go one of two ways:  they're either impressed that he "grew a backbone", which actually seems more common or it just reinforces their dislike.  And people who were meh, seem to hold Horizon against him the most.

It's not odd for me to gravitate towards characters that tend to be interweb punching bags.  At least with Kaidan, there's a place to discuss him without the " kaiden is gay har har" crowd chiming in.  I stopped posting on the DA boards partially because as a Loghain fan (don't judge! XD), it became impossible to discuss the character without eleventy variations of "he became a blood stain on the floor in all of my playthroughs lulz".  Sound familiar?  >.>

I expect to see character development for him, perhaps slightly depressed. But to turn into a hardened, bitter person who sudden uses his biotics willy-nilly and will kill people to get what he wants wouldn't be good character development. :S
I do hope he keeps giving advice to Shepard to help him/her, and that he keeps his logical manner in analyzing situations like the rachni.

Is it wrong that I think a slightly hardened and bitter Kaidan would be super sexy?  I don't think he would kill people randomly like some blue chick we know, though.  But I can see him losing some of his wide-eyed sparkly innocence.  That whole bit about watching your commanding officer (and possible lover) die to save you should change a man.

I would like this too. Maybe if he is feisty like he was when you renegadeize him.

That was hot. Seriously. :D

Yeah that sounds familiar.

I'm just glad that this board isn't as bad as the old boards were about Kaidan. The constant trolling was a nightmare.

So long live the KAST of his foofly hairness! :o

since casting my votes in the Mass Effect-Best Written, and Most Well-Developed Romance and the Best male love interest in a BioWare game polls, i realized the reason i finally let my protaganist fall for an intended love interest.  everything i like about kaidan and his romance happens within the confines of the game.  i do not have to invent a storyline for them.  he may not reveal all aspects of his life and personality to shep but what he does share is ordinary and telling.  kaidan asks nothing of his commanding officer or of his comrades.  he recounts his past to shep as a lesson instead of requesting a favor or requiring her to put him back together.  he's intelligent, accepting and shows compassion for others not just his love interest.  he's looking for something real and does not do those sorts of things lightly.  despite his remarkable achievements and extraordinary abilities, he's normal.  thanks bioware for creating a character that bucks the trend of the typical leading male.  my femshep is a lucky lady.

I want him to get so mad his clothes fall off, Hulk style.  There'd be more <3:devil::whistle:   once Kaidan and Shepard made up.

Im not sure i want any hardening or change to Kaidan's character, theres too much of a chance they could get it VERY wrong, like Liara.

Maybe when we finally join up again he could be a little reserved and we'd have to show him we're here to stay this time. I know its terribly cliche but i think better safe than sorry in a case of something that sooooo many people love. Could also make for some mushy word exchanges <3 hehe

I dunno, I don't think even a hardened or more bitter Kaidan would ruin what it is in Kaidan that I like so much. I see him as someone who would age well - he's dealt with BAaT well, but he then came to trust the Alliance. It's like the rug got pulled out from under him. I see him as being able to find his feet again, just being wary about where he lands this time. That would be cool.

What I'd like to see as far as changes to Kaidan:

- slightly more cynical or bitterness about the Alliance

- less hesitant to give advice or opinions, more of a leader

- more open and willing to share with Shepard, after the relationship has been repaired

What I do not want to see:

- MurderKnife!Kaidan killing people for looking at him funny

- giving him less exposition or character development for the sake of making him "badass"

- making him anything like Jacob when it comes to romance (oh god no)

i hope kaidan keeps his nice-guy charm, though. even if it takes a while for him to loosen up enough to show it

Let's hope he won't - it's what I really like about him and sets him apart from most romances in ME.

Nice screenshot, sagequeen. I love that scene. Ash's "You don't get much shore leave, do you, LT?" never fails to make me smile.

Those tight suits must be a b!tch for men trying to conceal that, i mean just look at how they accentuate your ass. Is there even a waistband it can be tucked into?

Ah, du ist ein nicht deutsch Londoner! Wonderbar!

I'd love info on alien babies. I think of a lil Salarian with big eyes that still has his tadpole tail and Image IPB

Shepard wouldnt want to lose her figure to children, her and Kaidan can just adopt the cutest aliens

edit: And kaidan will have to adopt the son she already has, Grunt

That reminds me I really should go reread Fort's Parallax.  There's a particularly hilarious scene where Kaidan finds himself in this situation.

Nein, ich bin nicht Deutsch... xD Ich bin Schwedisch! Hope I got that right, the little German I know is very rusty. o_O

They should at least have one child... If only because pregnant women are beautiful. And often they have increased sex-drives, which I'm sure Kaidan would appreciate... xD
But I agree, they should adopt at least one kid of every alien species... xD Then they'll have to teach my bubba (that's my pet name for Grunt) how to read and write properly so he can teach his little siblings... xD

Edit; @Chignon, well feep. I knew I should've payed moar attention in class. ¬_¬
