On the subject of fanfiction: I am pretty much a canon purist when it comes to characterization. Liberty with in-game events, I quite welcome and enjoy (a la Shenzi's JBHWTBA). But... well, let's take Kaidan for example. As his character is portrayed in Mass Effect, he isn't into casual sex. So a fic involving Kaidan having a one-night stand would really have to convince me as to what his motivations are for doing such a thing.



But that's just my personal taste. For me, and I'm guessing the same is true of a lot of other writers, I write first and foremost for myself. If anyone else happens to get enjoyment out of it, that's just icing on the cake. So I realize that people may write slashfics, or fics involving one-night stands, threesomes, or horridly unlikely pairings (Harry/Draco, anyone?) without much concern for keeping it in character because they find it amusing and think other people might too. That's their right, but if I see such a fic, I will just scroll right on past because I'm not going to waste my time reading something I don't like.

It comes from the slash '/' commonly used in tags for defining a romantic aspect of fiction (ex: Kaidan/Shepard).  Once it was for all pairings, but the current widespread definition of 'slash' is fanfiction with a (male) homosexual pairing.  There's also femslash (for lesbian pairings) and het (for heterosexual pairings).

It was. The only well thought out detail, aside from the hug on Horizon, regarding the Kaidan romance in ME2. In my opinion at least.

I'm glad I heard this as a dramatic reading. I went to the original website and nearly cried over the non-existent grammar and horrible self-insert... >_< Fanfics like that one are just... Not even fanfics. They're jotted down delusions.

You can write unlikely pairings without having to change characters. Like Jack/Miranda. Jack would still be Jack, Miranda still Miranda. If you do it well, that is. When it comes to unlikely pairings, you just need to find a likely reason to bring them together. 

Jack and Miranda could work after Miranda turns on Cerberus. :/ I quite like them as a pair. 

As for Harry/Draco... I always had a soft spot for that pairing. Which is why I write about them... xD Although, I'll admit that in my most successful story with H/D, they are both outrageously OOC... Temporarily. So I guess it depends on how you do what you do, and if you're doing it for serious or for jokes. xP

And I can totally see Kaidan with mShep. He's just that open-minded to me.

The neutral options aren't even as helpful as I remember them to be.  "Something bothering you" vs. "How've you been".  Psh.  <_<

Some are indeed. I agree, Fenris.

And don't get me started on the Garrus/Shepard fanfics that start out with Garrus or Shepard beating Kaidan to a bloody pulp.

And I agree that there's a difference between unlikely pairings and unlikely pairings where the couple involved is so OOC that they share little with their canonical counterparts except a name and physical description. That is why I specifically added the qualifier. You mention Jack/Miranda, and TZ mentioned Kaidan/Jack. I think those are both unlikely pairings that could be done very well in the hands of a good writer with a healthy respect for who the characters are.

I really had to struggle to find decent conversation options to chose.

Fire, I hadn't even thought of connecting what he said before Ilos and what he did on Horizon.

I did not want to start arguments about this either. I mentioned it because I was trying to explain how used to a certain character I get that I have a hard time seeing them another way. I have this whole image/background for Kaidan already in my head that doesn't like conflicting theories.

Alright, since the subject has brought up, I'll just say this: My personal opinion on Kaidan/mShep is that I could see it happening, but I think it would necessitate some good development on the subject of how their friendship turns into something more since I do not see any clear signs in ME1 of Kaidan being attracted to men. But my opinion is just that: my opinion.

i started reading some fanfic from this thread and i didnt put it on favorites so now i dont know whos is it or where to find it (and no time to browse 2352 pages to find out )

the story is where Shep meets and saves kai and takes him to ship and helps her make that shower......and they are preparing to meet Anderson.......thats where i stopped........any help?

Well, maybe you should bookmark it so you don't lose it again That's what I do with my favorite FFs. I have two whole bookmark folders full of my favorite Shenkos and Carth/femRevans.
