Alright, since the subject has brought up, I'll just say this: My personal opinion on Kaidan/mShep is that I could see it happening, but I think it would necessitate some good development on the subject of how their friendship turns into something more since I do not see any clear signs in ME1 of Kaidan being attracted to men. But my opinion is just that: my opinion.

I also prefer (personally!) leaving the characterization as it is in-game; i.e., Kaidan is interested in femShep rather than maleShep.

However, I think what tends to put me off more than alternative or slash characterizations of NPCs is when FemShep is really out of character - shy and retiring or constantly needing rescued or taken care of  because it seems highly unlikely that the character would have been strong enought to make decisions or undertake/accomplish all those heroics.  Anyway, that's more likely to throw me out of immersion in a story although I do recognize it as a personal preference. ^_^

Personally, Star, I wouldn't mind at all seeing mShep/Kaidan in fics, or even having that option in ME3. I just think that, especially in a fic, it would require thoughtful writing.

Well, maybe you should bookmark it so you don't lose it again :) That's what I do with my favorite FFs. I have two whole bookmark folders full of my favorite Shenkos and Carth/femRevans.

I had bookmarked my favourites.

And then my sister was typing in an internet address, and the suggestion was, 'fanfiction.net."
She snickered at me the whole evening, and I just deleted them all.

I don't bookmark mine. I have them favorited on my ff.net account. And for those that aren't, I have a word doc that's nothing but links.

*snip*

If you hate a character, they shouldn't be in your story.  Fan fiction is supposed to be about fandom - things you like.  It's supposed to draw more people into appreciating your particular obsession.  Unless your obsession is hating Kaidan Alenko, what's the point?

Of course, some people think that unusual sex pairings (m/m, f/f, any triad, etc) ruins a character.  I don't.  I think if it is done well and is based on a more open-minded interpretation of actual dialogue from the game (or TV show, or movie), it's pretty reasonable, and usually makes for some fun reading.  I can understand that some of the real creators would hate it, because they know more about their creations than we do.  But it's all in good fun!  Usually.

Again because It bears repeating.

Yes Authors and Artists below will bring you to all out Author's and Artist's home pages.  Just click if you are looking for a fic.

I don't have fics bookmarked but I do have alerts setup for either the actual fic or the author for any that I follow so I just have to go to ff.net and to my alerts if I can't find a fic.

It's incredibly hard to get good Horizon screenshots with the flycam. Or at least it is for me.

Ah, the beauty of having my own personal gaming laptop :D  No need to worry about anyone snickering at the almost-kiss screenshot I have as my background, or my bookmarks of Shenko and Carth/Revan (is there a name for that?) fan media.

I was so close to letting this go... but...
All pairings should require thoughtful writing. fShep/Kaidan shouldn't get a free pass just because it's already in the game. If all you wanted was to see Kaidan kiss fShep again, you could just watch the pre-Ilos love scene over and over.
mShep got cheated out of Kaidan goodness! I'm not sure what part of Kaidan's personality everyone thinks is at risk from the mere idea of him hooking up with a male. Pairing Kaidan up with mShep doesn't require anyone to prance around in a pink tutu, or hang up their guns. It just means they like each other enough to want to have sex and still talk to each other the morning after. That's all m/m slash is: yet another excuse for our favorite characters to roll around in literary abandon. Literally.
I understand that the mere idea of same-sex activity freaks people out, and I feel sorry for anyone who misses out on all the extra fun having an open mind provides. But everyone is different, and I try to be respectful of other people's limits. It would be nice, however, to get the same respect in return - not everyone here is a straight-laced female that secretly wants to be Shepard. Some of us are perverted males who secretly want to be Shepard.
So long as we can all agree that Kaidan is one of the best LI's that BioWare has ever created, I hope we can all still be friends.

I agree - it would take a great deal of thoughtful writing/scene setting to make it believable.  I don't have a problem with M/M (I have to admit I used to write Harry Potter slash in an on-going on-line story -- I was Lucius Malfoy...lol!).  I just  prefer the Kaidan/FemShep stories atm.Image IPB

I don't know if ye are familiar with this already, but I just happened across a wonderful little Kaidan fic called Unless You Have Been There. It's about his life after Brain Camp but before joining the Alliance. It is very good: not angsty, not over the top, but with a cool, calm, smooth writing style very suited to Kaidan's personality. In part, it shows how he dealt with his issues when he was out in the world by himself.

This is a great post and I'm sorry if I came on a little strong in what I wrote. I watched the mshep/kaidan vids after playing me1 and me2. To me, it feels a little like retconning if that makes sense. For instance, I love Zevran as a male and female LI (and Lelianna too) option because he was introduced to me as such; I would feel a little miffed if I saw videos of him as a straight man. If Kaidan had been Bi before I had gotten to know him for 2 years as a straight dude, the vids wouldn't seem odd. That said, I agree that originally he should have been an M/M option because there is an option for everyone else, and lets face it, Kaidan is the most delicious of them all.

I totally agree with Daewan too....I mean I hadn't thought of a m!Shep x Kaidan until I saw that one picture where both of them were looking at each other naked and then I was like..... *drool* That would be hot. LOL! I also think it would be interesting. I mean obviously the male!Shep is canon, but what if instead of Ashley or Miranda being the canon poster people with him, what if it was Kaidan. I wonder if this would have changed people's perspectives on things.

You know, looking back on the last few pages many of Kaidan's Author's and Artists made an appearance in the thread today to come out and support each other.  I think to reward them you might want to try clicking on the 'Authors & Artists' link below in my sig and say thank you by maybe trying a fic you haven't read before or take a look at some artwork you never looked at before.  You should be able to find something that you like.

If you want to understand where we are coming from, come see where we are.

Hey, Sheploo is not canon, unless you count marketing campaigns as telling a story!  :pinched:

I personally wish this thread had more participation from people who like Kaidan/MShep.  I know I would be desperately happy if I could romance a certain female character in ME2, but I feel awkward about posting in the support thread at the moment, just because I don't want people to pop my little bubble of hope for same sex relationships in ME3.  I wouldn't want to make anyone else feel like their own interest is "lesser" than mine because it isn't currently "canon".  Of course I would want any of those relationships to be written in a believable and natural way, so that it doesn't feel forced.  I'd want any relationship, even friendships, to be done well.

Back on the topic of fanfiction, yeah, I worry a lot about how I will characterize Shepard in future fics.  I don't want to portray her as weak or silly, but I do want to show that she is human and imperfect.  My favorite fics do this balance really well.  It's kind of sad that I don't think ME2 hit this balance -- RoboShep needs to download some emotions for the last game...

I think there's a real difference between writing a believable Shepard with feelings and one who requires constant care and feeding.   Image IPB

Feelings are important and I think society often constrains us - in fact discourages people from asking for help. So with that said, I absolutely believe there are times when even the strongest amongst us needs help or rescue but a Shep who is severely emotionally /psychologically damaged and only able to open up to one person (Kaidan!) would most likely have difficulting focusing on the job much less convincing others to follow her.  (This is my field, so yeah, I have some thoughts on the subject and usually it doesn't really work that way.  I'm not making a claim that it never works; just normally doesn't work.... lol!)

I also hope ME3 will provide us with a more balanced and less archetypal Shep. Image IPB
