For soundtracks I'd probably give that off to Halo Reach. Needless to say Mass Effect has some awesome music.

I never played Halo-Reach, I wouldn't know  I guess we'll know in due times, until then let's just appreciate ME for it's awesomeness ^_^

I have a problem that maybe some of the fine folks in here can help me with (and it does tangentially relate to Kaidan, don't worry):

I'm slowly beginning to loathe playing a femShep.

I used to be able to play both femShep and maleShep with equal enthusiasm but the frequency and sheer amount of vitriol that Mark Meer's voice acting gets is really making me irrationally just detest having to listen to/play as a female Shepard.

I love Meer's voice acting; I really don't understand why some people seem to think it's as horrible as they make it sound. And quite frankly, I'm getting to the point where I don't want to encourage the 'Hale is a voice acting goddess' people anymore by playing a female Shepard where I always romance Kaidan.

The problem is that if I don't play a femShep anymore, I can't romance Kaidan. ARGH! Why must you torment me so, game?!* Would anyone happen to have any advice as to how I can simply tune out all these ****y naysayers? Lord, I have so much sympathy for what Jacob romancers go through daily.

* And before anyone suggests the Same Sex mod, I'm not really into mods that change established game lore (such as the Anyone Can Marry Alistair mod from Dragon Age), regardless of the situation.

I think both actors have their merits. One thing I've found is that Meer's acting lends itself to more paragon gameplay and Hale's acting is more suited to renegade. Roleplaying as a hard-ass femShep that gets inexplicably swept off her feet and made a little bit nicer has been fun for me. Perhaps you could try it that way? :/

Man, I feel so guilty playing a Renegade femShep (don't have that problem with maleShep, though. Go figure). Maybe I'll try it again. Thanks.

I don't have a problem with Meer's voice. I don't play male shep, but I watch my husband do it. Hale falls flat occasionally, too. Just ignore the peanut gallery and make up your own mind.

BTW, I have a romance save with Jacob.

One can always turn the sound off and just read the words on the screen.  ;)

Oddly enough, I find the voice actors to be representative for the exact opposite. I've enjoyed Meer's renegade lines more than his paragon, and Hale's paragon to her renegade lines.

Don't worry about what other people say, honestly, I can understand why people have personal preferences one way or another.  I don't EVER play male characters if a female option is available, so it's not about Mark Meer's voice at all, and I think there are some points where Hale over does it (or misses the mark) when it comes to emotion...but I wouldn't consider my opinion anything but mine.  I would never tell anyone else how to play, just like I don't really care for the criticism I get when I'm told that I'm "depriving" myself by only playing as a female character...usually by guys who don't have to worry about games giving them the option to play as their preferred gender.  Different playstyles for everyone.

I'm the same way as you about not wanting to use mods to do same sex romances...I might as well just write fan fiction, at that point, is my reasoning, and it would be more interesting than listening to an LI call me a dude.  It's one of the reasons I'd really like Bioware to reconsider their stance on same sex relationships in ME3...even if every character doesn't swing both ways, there should be *some* indication of it, other than asari.

So yeah, anyway, ignore the silly fan wars between Hale and Meer fans, and you can enjoy more quality time (at least in ME1) with this guy:

I like both just fine for what they are.

I just don't understand why some people think Hale has a "butch lesbian bull horse voice" more than the people who think Meer has a wooden voice.

He's detached because of his past. He's been judged and looked at as a monster for his biotics and hasn't fit in with normal society because of them. So he keeps an emotional distance from everyone.

Shepard can break down those walls (femShep moreso than dudeShep but dudeShep can forge a friendship- would like to see this expanded upon in ME3). Shepard is probably one of the first people to not get heebiejeebies from Kaidan and his notorious implants.

I wouldn't even consider Kaidan detached, he's just introverted.

Okay, so I sort of said this on the other forum, but I think Kaidan tries to be detached because he doesn't want to lose control like he did with that Turian guy (Oh geez I can't remember his name). I figured that was the source of his mild-manneredness. Also as an L2 he would probably not be much of a people person in general.

I agree with Kaidan being introverted more than detached. Maybe he is "scared" of what people might think so he doesn't want to get close to anyone until Shepard. She (or he) listens to him without judging so he can open up.

I think he's also a very task-oriented professional. He's not one to screw around when there's work to be done. He'll be amiable but he's not around to be pals with everyone.

I'd wager that he has workaholic tendencies.

He does spend a lot of time leaning over that tiny screen in the corner of the mess hall.

Thanks for your replies, interesting perspectives.

What was that one turian's name anyway? Vrynus?

Oh, and could anyone post the Kaidan "cross armed" (or Kaidan facepalm, if there is one) picture and the Kaidan "smiling" picture?

Another shenko writer and i were discussing this. I think the thing with Kaidan is he's a social introvert. He's not a shy, hide in the corner guy. He likes people and gets along with very different types of folks. He's polite, mature, and able to judge each person based on their own actions, not their race, gender, etc. He likes to be around people.

But as social as he is, he also is an introvert, as in, he gets energy from time alone. After a while, he has to go take a breather and sort through his thoughts. It's just what social introverts do. Social introverts tend to read other people really well, but sometimes take a little longer to analyze their own motivations, because they often are very high self-monitors. While they like to be with people, they worry they'll say something stupid. Kaidan's blunder while looking at the citadel view is classic social introversion. Commenting upon what he thinks of shep (quick to analyze another person), realizing belatedly he just made himself look like an idiot (slow to analyze self). Ash, on the other hand, just blurts out something inappropriate, not a comment about maleshep, which is fitting for her foot-in-mouth tendencies.

Anyhow, my 2 cents. I know a number of social introverts, and they're hard to spot and even harder to "get." I think that's the key to kaidan, though.
