And actually, I've found something I DON'T like about Kaidan. That "Enemies everywhere!" line is seriously starting to get to me.

Even if Horizon bad in terms of relationship, it's still one of the most emotion-driving moments of ME2 for me and I still like it for a drama. This mission would be wonderful background for the future reunion

LOL, I am the person who had a drunk Shepard slap Kaidan (not that hard!), but it was a silly little short story, and I didn't think of it as "canon". So I can't blame anyone for injecting drama into their stories. I think it's more believable, however, to have your own Shepard lose control, than to have KAIDAN, of all characters, actually raise his hand against Shepard in anger. Even if he saw her with her new ~*awsum*~ ME2 LI, which is usually how these stories go down. It's cheap, lazy, and doesn't do justice to the new LI either, because if the writer really was secure in how awesome their new love interest was, they wouldn't have to make Kaidan look horrible in comparison. (See: Ron the Death Eater and Die For Our Ship for reference). This is why I can read Sia's Loved without wincing...I *know* that she will treat all of the characters respectfully and intelligently.
Personally, one of the things that made me a passionate Kaidan fan was that he was realistic, and in real life, once you're past a certain age, most relationships don't end with jealous ex-boyfriends slapping women, while the new awesome boyfriend jumps in to protect the damsel. Mature relationships are actually kind of boring, even when they're ending...which is not good for fan fiction (or video games!), but if someone *can* make a mature breakup or bump in the relationship work, it's something special.
So yeah...please don't make Kaidan hit Shepard. That makes me sad.

The fact that Kaidan and Ashley react exactly the same way on Horizon is proof that it's badly written, and they didn't care to spend more time on thinking of a plausible way to explain the "breakup". Because, even though they would both be appalled by Shepard working with Cerberus, I don't think that either of them would yell like that and walk away without getting more information.
Even Tali's scene on Freedom's Progress was weird...she didn't want more info about how Shepard survived, after Veetor was found and they had a minute to talk? She didn't ask why Shepard quit or wouldn't go back to the Alliance? You'd think that resurrection was actually no big deal with the way people reacted to it.
From the previews, I thought Ashley/Kaidan would be kidnapped by the Collectors...and this could have worked to separate Shepard from them, if the writers decided to make it so that they are always rescueable, even if Lilith or Kelly/the crew are on the timed event schedule. But that would not have pushed the characters apart, or made the new LIs more appealing. As someone said above, it's like those terrible fan fiction writers who think it's in character to make Kaidan HIT Shepard on or after Horizon...but it was the actual Bioware writers who decided that the Virmire Survivor couldn't wait five more minutes for a better explanation of what the heck was going on.
And no matter how awesome Kaidan's role is in DLC and/or ME3, I will always feel like ME2 was at least somewhat tainted for me by the derpiness of Shepard, on Horizon, and the fact that this thread has had nothing to talk about but that for all this time. I would *love* to stop moaning about Horizon, believe me.

I'm not trying to make you feel guilty! /hug! I haven't read your particular fic, so I wouldn't try to judge it...I just feel strongly about the idea of that sort of element used to make Kaidan look crazy or mean, or to just insert drama without thinking about what the writer is actually saying about a character who would do that sort of thing.
In my own, personal, life experience I have seen how harmful it can be to have a physically violent relationship. I wouldn't even tolerate someone breaking objects or hitting walls around me; that can be just as intimidating and violent as a threat. So seeing people turn Kaidan into a massive abusive jerk bothers me. I'd rather they just have him die at Virmire if they don't like him that much.
Basically, though, if a writer can make something like that plausible and give good reason for it happening, I would be impressed. I haven't seen it happen, though, in any ME2 LI fics where Kaidan is the jealous ex.
