Eh. For me, ME2 was not an enjoyable experience. Less to do with Kaidan, more to do with the story/lore problems that killed the interest I had with it to begin with. They could have killed Kaidan off in the intro and I'd still have stuck to it if the story interested me, even though I disliked the gameplay.
So, for me personally, even having Kaidan from the start as such an important squadmate with unique dialogue, comments on any given sidequest, and that you can't ever swap him out because the game demands it, would not save ME3 for me. One character will not fix what ME2 broke.
I truly, honestly, from the depths of my black, shriveled little heart hope that you guys get the experience you want and expect. I just can't share the enthusiasm.
I'm in the "loved the game, didn't love the plot" camp when it comes to ME2. Didn't like the idea of working with Cerberus, didn't like the way recruitment and loyalty missions were cut up, didn't like how short and abrupt the squadmates interactions were if you were not planning to romance them, didn't like the lame final boss...BUT, the game still managed to be fun, despite all of it's flaws. I still prefer traditional RPGs, but if I had to choose between ME1 and 2 when it comes to combat, I preferred the second.
I have hope that this last game will be epic...they really do listen to fan criticisms, even if they don't fix things the way I would have wanted, and they do have some really great writers working at Bioware, so I think they still have a chance to create a balance of the clear and non-holey plot from the first game, with gameplay elements from the second, with more emphasis on character interaction and exploration.
So, if they do it right, hopefully ME3 will be my favorite of the trilogy. I really do hope they do it right.
