I can see it already: Horizon will not have Ash or Kaidan walking up to you, but - surprise - Liara! Because, you know, the game wouldn't want to make assumptions for the player. Posted Image

They would never want Liara to get any of the Horizon backlash. Kaidan or Ash will still be there. There will just be a renegade punch option...

... huh.  I kinda like the comic as being a "life flashing before your eyes" type thing - that's pretty clever.  But not at the expense of two out of three people who initially had a role in the beginning of the game.  :crying:

You know, it's ironic that the more I play ME1, the less I like ME2.  A good game should age well, like wine.  I should be able to play it a year and a half later and still get sucked in.  With ME2, I was obsessed with it the first couple times I played it, and I couldn't see the flaws past all the glitter and pizzaz.  Now, ME1 is inferior in terms of graphics, cinematics, and combat, but the more I played it, the more I loved Ashley and Kaidan.  <3

BioWare had better make a kick-ass DLC for us.

Oh, and if they change the voice actors for Ashley and Kaidan in ME3, I will not buy it. I might rent it, but not buy it.

If I had only played ME2 once, I wouldn't be so critical of it.  Unfortunately, I played it twice, and the second game lost it for me.  Which is funny, because I can play ME1 for like... two minutes checking out the layouts of things for fic, forget what I was doing, and be happy for the rest of the day.

Once, I was going to make a joke about Ashley/Kaidan being pre-order or DLC characters for ME3 so as to net the people who were waiting to see (or like Cerberus network or even Kasumi or whatever), but I don't know if I want to make light of such a glaring possibility.  At best, they probably wouldn't be, just because it wouldn't be profitable... unless they "ran out of time" to include them in ME3 to begin with.  <_<

I agree that life flashing before eyes is clever, but Shepard is obviously so cool that sees life as a comics.

Why not some Shep's nightmare, or just vivid dream, consisting of parts of actual cutscenes from ME1 interrupted with parts of semi-consciousness and finally massive wakeup call - Collectors' attack? Blu-ray seems to be bottomless compared with DVD. Digital distribution?

I'm just sad, angry and honestly tired of seeing Ash and Kaidan once again neglected in favour of other characters. I start to wonder why, though?

A pre-crash nightmare would have been better, you're right.  And I'm willing to bet it could have tied into the Prothean beacon some.

I'm willing to bet it's the same rights issues keeping ME1 off of  the PS3, though.  I don't know if cutscenes would qualify, but it's better to be safe than sorry.  (Or... well, we've all seen how Mac Walters loves his comics like Drew Karpyshyn loves his fiction-writing?  I do not know.)

It actually occurred to me a couple of minutes ago how they could handle the "squad could be alive or dead" variables on limited resources: if there are no squadmates, and Shepard does missions alone (maybe with instructions from EDI) they could easily set up a few characters with a few key conversations around without having to put in all the effort of making them squadmates.

I don't know if they'd go that far, but that way all the characters would get "equal treatment".

Edit: my idea wasn't coming across.

I just hope for Kaidan and Ash again soon.

Now my hopes for "VS DLC" grows a tiny bit bigger. So, you know, PS3 people would know "who those two ants from the comic are".

That could easily go in the other direction, though, Akodo - they could just as easily not care about them because they saw Ash and Kaidan for 10 minutes in some comic and then get yelled at by them on Horizon.

But I guess we'll have to wait until we see the actual Interactive Comic - the potrayal of Ash and Kaidan will matter, too.

...!

I had a sardonic remark, but I think I'll bite that and offer this here Kaidan instead:

The comic comes after the opening cutscene, so they went with the stalker chick who recovers your body.

That makes sense. But I still think I'm going to cry.

It doesn't even start to make sense that it's her and not an Alliance crewmember.  I would tell Liara to get everyone off the ship and not my Marine?  I think not.

This.  (It doesn't even make sense if you DID romance Liara and played ME1).

I agree that it doesn't really make sense to put a non-Alliance crew member in charge of evacuating the ship. It would be best to have someone with knowledge of the protocols.

Ash and Kaidan now have a total screen time of about four minutes in ME2. That's just lovely. Thank you, BioWare!

Is anyone else looking forward to question and answer sessions with Casey Hudson, once they start promoting ME3 heavily?  I know I have some questions for him.  <_<

I'm sure the answer to anythig will have the words "emotionally engaging" and "compelling" in there somewhere.

Oh, I just noticed. We're at 2500 pages. :wizard:

"Another important thing to consider is that much of the fun of ME1 was the discovery of new people and places. If we made ME2 out of the same characters, you'd miss out of the fun of that discovery."

It's in the same vicinity as the "romances are a three part act" thing, the "Oh, no, they totally have a BIG ROLE for ME3" thing, and the "but you have to admit, the ME2 romances are compelling" bit.

I'm kind of surprised that who to romance is even one of the choices. I don't really see how they can give the characters the justice they deserve in 15 minutes. Are they just suppose to choose a love interest based on their looks? I personally enjoy the build up of the relationship, especially with Kaidan and wouldn't want to miss out on one moment.

This.  I mean, how can you hope to build up an attachment to a character in such a short span of time?

This is why I think you can start a whole new relationship in 3 with the VS or Liara. This crappy intro to the characters who don't or can't play ME1 is ridiculous.

Heck, they won't even care about Wrex's awesomeness.

I thought they might give you the choices beforehand, then play the comic based on your choices.  But then, "interactive comic" wouldn't make sense.  I wonder if they make you choose your LI before or after Virmire.

Anyway.

Might be the reason why all of them look the way they look. Both Ash and Liara seem to have that typical comic book woman look and look nothing like they do in game. and if that one guy is Kaidan, the one shot we got of his face makes me think his mother was grizzly bear.
The art isn't bad itself, but it just doesn't strike me as... mass effect-y like.

I'm trying to imagine new players reactions to Kaidan, Ashley, and Liara.  On the one hand, here is Liara, who rushes to your side at the beginning of the game, has her own awesome adventure, even if she can't be with you for the entire game, and a very nice scene on the Normandy, even if you're just friends.  And if you choose Liara as your previous love interest, the mission is even more dramatic and includes a love scene.

Then there's Kaidan and Ashley -- seen only in a short, badly drawn comic, and then on Horizon.  If you choose them to be a former love interest, the Horizon scene is just more insulting, especially to new players who won't get the full picture on why Cerberus is an awful organization to be working for.

Yeah, they want to completely reset these characters.  We can only hope that they have some use for them in ME3, because at this point I wouldn't be surprised at all if the "big role" planned for Kaidan/Ashley was that they are indoctrinated and Shepard has to put them down.

But it would be emotional, right?  And that's a good thing, right?  And you'd want to sacrifice Kaidan and Ashley for the common good, right:crying:

... Then again, acknowledging the romance in the comic at all is actually a pretty big step, considering how it gets no recognition in any of the newer material at all.  So maybe that's a good sign.
