I'm trying to imagine new players reactions to Kaidan, Ashley, and Liara.  On the one hand, here is Liara, who rushes to your side at the beginning of the game, has her own awesome adventure, even if she can't be with you for the entire game, and a very nice scene on the Normandy, even if you're just friends.  And if you choose Liara as your previous love interest, the mission is even more dramatic and includes a love scene.

Then there's Kaidan and Ashley -- seen only in a short, badly drawn comic, and then on Horizon.  If you choose them to be a former love interest, the Horizon scene is just more insulting, especially to new players who won't get the full picture on why Cerberus is an awful organization to be working for.

Yeah, they want to completely reset these characters.  We can only hope that they have some use for them in ME3, because at this point I wouldn't be surprised at all if the "big role" planned for Kaidan/Ashley was that they are indoctrinated and Shepard has to put them down.

QFT

I played ME2 first and what got me interested in ME1 and Kaidan is exactly the introduction scene where he was so reluctant to leave Shepard's side. And now that'll be left out in the PS3 version - I wonder whose wonderful idea that was? What purpose does it serve other than sidelining Ash and Kaidan yet again? And why change it in the first place?

I'm replaying ME1 right now for like the millionth time. Now, ME2...I've only played once. I just didn't get into the ME2 storyline/characters as much as I did with ME1.

I really hope Bioware doesn't screw everything up by keeping Kaidan/Ashley on the bench in ME3 when they should be starting (sorry, bit of a sports nut, lol).

Honestly, I think the main reason I don't like ME2 is because of the lack of my Kaidan. As a matter of fact, the only reason I was so excited for ME2 was because I wanted to see Kaidan. Bioware needs to step up to the plate and do Kai/Ash justice in ME3.

I still say Liara makes no sense.  Non Alliance personel and also what Teen said.  I mean really, better they have a non named Marine then Liara.  They will have no reason to love Kaidan or Ashley, the only one they actually see in action is Liara until the VS comes out yelling.  Come on here... Would you love Kaidan if you had nothing else but a bit of comic (think about it, we call them 'comics') and a yelling scene... who among us wouldn't think stupid jerk (words used for PG, I was thinking stronger ones)

I have a friend who played ME2 first with no knowledge of ME1 characters (though he did buy ME1 after playing ME2 and then replayed it with an imported character). He doesn't understand why I still love Kaidan after Horizon. Of course, we all have our different reasons for keeping true to Kaidan, but my friend's first real experience of Kaidan was Horizon and it wasn't good. :(

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I agree with Night. PS3 users are only going to get a brief glimpse of what Kai/Ash are actually like before the whole debacle on Horizon. It's not fair to either character that they will be judged so harshly based on only a few minutes of interaction.

I have no problem with Liara being the one to come find her LI at the beginning of ME2 -- it makes sense that the person who loves Shepard the most would want to find them at that moment -- and perhaps she asked Kaidan or Ashley to let her go to Shepard before the scene began (because, honestly, why would she be the one to have the info on Joker not leaving the ship?  An Alliance member would have most likely passed that info along to her to relay to Shepard).  So, that, to me, is fine.  It's the fact that she would come to every Shepard, no matter the relationship, that I question.  Why couldn't they put the comic at the very beginning, before the destruction of the Normandy?  Doesn't that make the most sense???

Ugh.  We need the marketing campaign for ME3 to start now, so I can stop mulling over every little bit of info like this.

Because they don't want to make an assumption on the player's behalf.  Posted Image

That explanation is almost as believable as to why Ash and Kaidan got the wonderful, three minute Horizon cameo.

So...

... if Kaidan and Ashley are squadmates and the programmers wanted to take the easy way out, they would combine the classes into one class/character slot.  If that were the case, would it be more acceptable for Ashley to lose her soldier talents to gain biotic/tech talents, for Kaidan to get his biotic/tech removed and replaced by pure soldier talents, for both of them to have biotic/tech/soldier talents, or for both of them to have tech and maybe soldier talents?

Or... I don't know, that may have sounded more coherent when I was wondering it in my head.  :?

In other news, I want to try to get an image of him glowing with the omnitool out, but that may require exceptional timing.  :innocent:

That would be truly awful.  I'm pretty sure Ashley fans would hate that too, the game would have to come up with a plausible reason for the changes, and Kaidan's biotics are a big part of who he is, along with Ashley's skills as a pure soldier.  I would like to give Bioware more credit than that, and hope that they could find a way to include Kaidan/Ashley without mashing them up into one bland character.

Another thing I just realized about Liara's appearance at the beginning of the game on the PS3:  Casey Hudson called this the definitive version...which means all of our games, where Kaidan ran up to us are non-canon.  I'm sure it won't even be mentioned in ME3, but it still sucks, really, really bad.

I think it just means in the 'definitive default' its only Liara who runs up to Shepard now.

That doesn't over ride anyones choices.

Heh.  I already have to make major changes to either ME2 or my Shepard's personality as I spun it out of her ME1 behavior to make ME2 function storywise.  Not to mention all the internal and ME1 to ME2 inconsistencies.  Using Kaidan running up to Shepard from a previous version instead of Liara from the PS3 version isn't half bad as far as canon incongruities go.  :wizard:

I think he was saying that it was more the best version of ME2, not that it was the default or anything.
Although, maybe that's what he meant.

But a trilogy cannot exist without its first game, and a comic book cannot replace that.

I thought he meant that it was definitive because it had all of the DLC. But I haven't watched the video yet.

Take everything Casey Hudson says in his interviews with a grain of salt. He's also said that Liara is asexual and has completely mixed up Liara and Tali. I think he knows the games but I don't think he chooses his words right at times.

"Definitive" can mean something that is final and not able to be changed or tweaked any further because it has reached its peak quality. If that's not what Casey meant, then he was probably just saying, because, you know, Casey says a lot of things!

I thought it meant "I will say anything to get this thing to sell". People think PS3 version is inferior because it doesn't have ME1 with it. Microsoft even mocked that it's inferior. This isn't good because they want to sell the game. Bioware had to try to say something to make the PS3 version look good.

Im reading a lot of other threads, especially the ones about squadmates for ME3 and most ppl think that the VS will be there as a squadmate. And i think of this as a good sign :)

Ugh, I thought maybe in the PS3 version they would change Kaidan out of the Phoenix armor in the intro but I just read that it's only going to be Liara for everyone now. That's disappointing =/

"The other edit is located in the opening act of Mass Effect 2. The character you romanced in the first game (Liara, Ashley or Kaidan) normally runs up to you for a short scene, but in the PS3 version it's always the same – Liara. If you start up a new save in Mass Effect 2 on the Xbox 360, the game makes a decision for you and chooses either Kaidan or Ashley (depending on if you choose female or male Shepard). The explanation is simple: you're actually able to pick who you want to romance in the comic section, so the game doesn't make an assumption based on your gender anymore.
