It is a big deal. Kaidan and Ashley are not in ME2 enough to lose any of that time without it being anything other than a big deal.
I've been excitedly waiting for the PS3 release because I'm really interested in how everything is portrayed. I imagine there won't be much time to get to know the characters in-depth, so which traits of Kaidan and Ashley's come through will show how their characters are summed up by the people that matter--whether Ashley will be racist or xenophobic or nothing, for instance--and give us an idea of what is going to be taken forward to ME3.
Looking at this release as a means of speculation for ME3 is one of the reasons why the intro cut gets to me.
Unless there are some awesome surprises we know nothing about, the first time their models will be seen in the PS3 version is the Lilith scene. We all know that, for most people, Horizon doesn't put the VS in a good light, but, when coupled with the intro, at least you could go with the we-love because-we-care argument that Chignon (not to drag her into my rant) says was one of the things that intrigued her and made her go back to play ME1. Maybe the comic will accomplish that just as well, but the Kaidan/Ash should still be there at the beginning of ME2.
I actually enjoy playing ME2, and I take pride in the fact that each time I do I can add a little tally mark to the "stayed loyal" statistic. Kaidan is on the Normandy before it goes down, on Horizon, and in the picture at the end. I fill in the rest of the game with lines that I interpret as Shepard thinking about him, but I need those basic pillars of beginning, middle, and end.
This is so much worse than not mentioning Kaidan/Ashley in other places. They weren't ignored here. They were REMOVED. If I didn't know that scene was Kaidan/Shepard's goodbye, then maybe I wouldn't think this, but, as it stands, they just took away that goodbye. Kaidan/Ashley just take off without interacting with Shepard? Any fanfiction about Kaidan feeling guilty for leaving will have to include a note that this is not the PS3 version because otherwise it won't be clear whether or not he even gave a damn. And you can say, oh, the goodbye was just off screen for the PS3--but that doesn't work with the other versions of ME2. That was the one and only goodbye. There is no reason the games wouldn't be compatible. It IS possible for the VS to have that goodbye in the ME universe, they just don't in any of the PS3 playthroughs.
Horizon I can forgive because I can buy into the whole 2nd act thing. The assault rifle on Horizon I can roll my eyes about and then move on because I get it would take more time and money. The DLC issues I can forgive as a silly oversight because I think they were concentrating on ME2 characters so hard. The dossier I can forgive because I don't think we are allowed to know what the VS has been up to. The phoenix armor I can now forgive because at least he was there to be wearing it. But this...this is the first thing that really, really gets to me. Why take away what little they gave us?
If the PS3 version was just going for a "how cool would a life-flashes-before-your-eyes thing" or anything along the lines of better immersion or something, then I don't think it was worth it. And I think it says something that whoever made this decision DOES think it was worth it. And if there were other considerations, then I guess I just need to calm down.
Alright, this should have been enough of a vent for me. I'll just hope that we get VS DLC news soon and I can go back to being blissfully (and now I'm thinking possibly ignorantly) optimistic about ME3 again.
I just miss Kaidan. Also, I know they don't look like their characters in the comic, but do you think Kaidan's hair will be curly?
