Just a quick question. Didn't mass effect originally have Kaidan and Maleshep as a romance option? I'm pretty sure this was in the game somewhere in dev and the audio files are still in the game. I'm not sure if i made this up though.

Yes.

The audio files are there, and there's a hack/mod available that allows you to make use of them and romance Kaidan if you are playing a maleshep.  There's also a mod that allows femsheps to romance Ashley, as that was also originally intended and the audio files are also there for that.

The same sex options were removed from the game as shipped, though.  I understand that if you use the hack and try to import a character in a same sex relationship from ME1 to ME2, ME2 just locks up before it finishes loading.

From what I heard, Shepard's dialog was given to the voice actors, regardless of gender choices. Whether or not this meant that Ash and Kaidan were meant to be s/s, the devs haven't said. It certainly wasn't animated to work that way though, as when you do a m/m romance, a random woman shows up in the place of what femShep would be doing.

The f/f between Shep and Ash is animated though and fem shep acknowledges Ash. Kaidan refers to Shepard as a woman in the love scene if you are using a male shep, but male shep acknowledges Kaidan too.

I've seen them. I've just heard it that the same lines of dialog were recorded for Shepard, regardless of gender. The Ash romance would be accounted for perfectly though, since the ME1 scenes are always a female crawling on top of another character. That's why the m/m scene doesn't work.



I'm not saying they weren't bi though... I just don't think it was confirmed by the devs either way if I remember correctly. So it's just speculation atm :/

Rumours on local press were even weirder - it's believed that Kaidan was homosexual only option but later suddenly became straight.
Recently started new playthrough and noticed this. In ME1, you could find hand of friend and face ready to listen. In ME2

It is kind of weird IMO. Why sometimes people give me the impression that they know the characters better than their writers, and are able to tell their sexual preferences on a first sight? Just wondering, don't mean to offend anyone.

Yes, I do believe writers know them better, but they can't really discuss that due to different reasons. (edit: one of them is to give us room for interpretations)

Tbh I dont get the fuss with some people wanting to make characters they're assuming were originally intended as homosexual to be so in the next game. It was either left out or never intended either way it weren't in the final game so I would find it to be an odd character change to be honest. It should have been that way or hinted at from the beginning or a new character introduced. Doubt the average gamer knows about any extra audio files.

This isn't really the thread for discussions about s/s romances (although I understand why it's come up, because of Kaidan's lost files, and the amount of Kaidan fans who would like to see him as s/s option). There is a thread in general if you want to talk to people there about it. It's a very good thread, and I think you'll probably find a lot of answers to your questions about why people think of certain characters in certain ways, and why people want to see Kaidan (or others) as s/s LIs. Take the time to read through the whole thread - chances are the questions you're asking have been asked and answered there a dozen times over.
