Anyhow, on Carth Onasi; somehow the thing that really endeared me to him was some of the dialogue you could have with him - notably how you could just run verbal circles around his head until he was adorably befuddled, and then shouting insults at him. I realize this might reflect badly on me, but those dialogues were pretty much what first "made" Carth for me.

I actually have a friend who has repeatedly expressed that she wishes Ash were into women as that'd be her preferred love interest for Mass Effect 1. Just as an amusing aside.fortunesque wrote...
I think if either Ash or Kaidan switch teams in ME3, I'd like Shepard to say something like, "I saved you on Virmire because I love you. PS: I'm so gay."
Now on Kaidan, and I don't recall to what extents this has been rambled before so I'll just run with it, the thing that really struck me with him is that he seems to be the only team member in Mass Effect 1 that's.. well.. looking out for you, specifically? I mean, Garrus, Wrex and Tali all talk of themselves and their own people because you ask them to, and in a manner because there are things they seem to be hoping you can help them with. Liara seem to be mostly just starstruck, and I admit my experiences with Ash are.. limited.. due to her generally succumbing to an unfortunate and terminal case of death.. (don't get me wrong, I like Ash. I just like Kaidan more. ahem)
Kaidan, by contrast, tells you about his past to illustrate a point because he doesn't want you to paint yourself into a corner. He's.. well.. there, and isn't about how you can help him but how he can help you. He doesn't tell you about how Brain Camp was terrible because he's emo about it but because he's over it. He has a very "It was bad at the time, but I got better." sort of vibe to him, which I really like.
Among all these people who try to help you take down Saren, Kaidan seems to be the only one intent on making sure you don't suffer for the trying. I'm aware I'm probably just preaching the choir here, not to mention the choir takes turns doing the same preaching, but having recently replayed Mass Effect 1 to change my main Shepard (hereby called "Kate") from a colonist to a spacer because I couldn't picture her growing up as a farmer, I found myself doing a fair bit of thinking what exactly Kaidan represents to her with the experience.
Both Doctor Chakwas and Tali'Zorah seem to suggest that Shepard is something of an immovable center, a sort of shelter from the storm that people can cling to; heck, the game seems to suggest that with how some people seem outright betrayed that she had the gall to die on them. With that in mind, Kaidan struck me as a tether - someone that helps keep her anchored, even after what he said on Horizon.
One thing that strikes me is that the love interests in Mass Effect seemed to have a more deeply rooted place in the story compared to the ones in Mass Effect 2, especially considering the scene when the Normandy is grounded. I'm actually really curious what turns things will take in Mass Effect 3 and what they'll do regarding Horizon. All signs point to Kaidan/Ashley holding a key role somewhere, and if they also carry over as love interest.. I can't see that not ending up a significant element of it.
I'm also not sure what I'd like to see the most - Shepard pulling Kaidan out of the fire (again) or Kaidan returning the favor.. both have the potential to cause significant glee. I'd love to able to yell something like "you don't think I haven't missed you too?!" or something at him regarding Horizon, but hey.
And I just noted that not only does Opera's spell checker mark Kaidan as a misspelled word but also suggests "Giordano" as a possible alternative..????? What the heck, Opera!
