Hmm... good question. I always imagined him helping out the engineering crew while he's on board. You know, make sure everything's working alright, fix it if it isn't...

And I think he doesn't really have much of a job... personal management? Maybe? Can't think of any other reason he'd stand around on the crew deck reading reports.

One does have to wonder if he ever fixes that panel though, or if he's just there to watch Shepard go to her locker.

Thank you Jo and Doug for being my guinea pigs
“Where’s my crew god dammit, Kaidan where are you?” I wish this line had been in the game itself. Just a little something to acknowledge that Kaidan was the first thing on her mind.
Loved the extra you put in the email and loved the one Kaidan sent to Joker. It would be nice if the game had all the stuff with Joker sending Kaidan info...it actually felt a little more like ME to me than ME2 and that's a good thing in my opnion. I usually see things from Kaidan's side, but I like where you went with this...I would love to see a follow up.
It was Jo's suggestion that I expand on Kaidan's email to Shepard since everyone was already familiar with the original one. Like most people I felt that the actual email in game was seriously lacking in content.

Thanks. I think it went pretty well, but we'll have to wait until I get my mark back next week.
Personnel management? (Is that what you meant to say?) I don't know why, but I have a hard time picturing Kaidan being good at that kind of thing.

Hummm... I guess a staff lieutenant has some responsibility over the crew. That console he's fiddling all the time could be pretty much anything... weapons systems, life support, power... or maybe it's some kind of console for monitoring the sleeper pods. Hum hum...crimsonrhodelia wrote...

So, question, what exactly does Kaidan do on the Normandy, besides look hot in a uniform, flirt with his commanding officer, fix flickering orange screens and hang out in the co-pilot's chair pressing random buttons?

Good about the exam, crossing my fingers for ya.
And yeah, Personnel; And remember, he is a ranking officer in the Alliance, which strongly suggests he has subordinates to manage.

True. I realize that to be promoted as high as Staff Commander, he must have some skill at that. Maybe it's just because he's so reserved that I have trouble picturing him as the kind of leader Commander Shepard is.

Yup - though I doubt they'd put companies under his command, someone else said he was the ship's 3rd officer below XO Pressly (XO Grumpy is stronger, silent type though

Inquiring minds want to know. That has got to be the hardest question to answer that has been asked yet. And yes it is slow.

I read somewhere (probably the ME wiki, so authenticity might be in question) that he's in charge of the marine detachment on the Normandy. Makes sense to me - Shepard commands the ship, Pressley is a navigation officer but NOT a marine, so Kaidan is the highest ranked marine after Shepard herself. Certainly when Ash is killed on Virmire, he says something about never having lost "someone under his command" to hostile action, so I always assumed that's his primary role. Plenty to do there with performance reviews and training exercises and so forth. He also has both technical and medical skills so I imagine if he's not busy doing marine detachment CO stuff then he's helping out with engineering problems or in the medbay. Being as that's not his main job, maybe that's why he gets stuck with that buggy orange screen.
Engineer Adams: "Yes sir, we've got propulsions and weapons and the stealth tech. under wraps, However, there's this faulty console up in the mess which I can't really spare anyone to look at..."
Kaidan: "Right, I'll see what I can do."
Junior Tech, after Kaidan has gone: "Man, that was evil, sir. He could be there for years..."
Engineer Adams: *humphs* Keeps him out of our hair! Now, back to that game of Solitaire...

He did say he had never lost anyone under his command before. I kind of think that he's the kind of leader that never takes any chances(unless absolutely necessary) that would endanger someones life.

Plus we know that he's never lost a soldier under his command, until Ash (RIP, Ash). I've read fic recently that had Kaidan as the ground team commander and rather liked that idea, but of course he's a Sentinel, and maybe team leader is more of a Soldier's job? Not to stereo type.
Agree that Kaidan, though probably good at the reassuring/talking people down part of managing, is probably too much of an introvert/loner to really excel at leadership the way Shepard does. I think he's happier pressing buttons, taking things apart and putting them back together again, and analyzing data. His reaction to the Beacon felt totally in character for me, even though obvs he had to have that reaction for plot reasons. Maybe he just does a little bit of everything, fits in his jack of all trades class.
Wonder what he did that won him all of those special recommendations?
Edited to fix quotes!

I hope you enjoy it...my fanfic writing has come to a halt. Had a couple of ideas to expand on some of my older fics but I'm kinda 'bleh' with it now. Usually it's spoilers that really give me ideas...I'd like to get a few of those soon...fanfic or not.
