You've all made some really excellent points...and I agree that it'd be great for Jhosephine's rant to get to the devs somehow, because she does sum up pretty well how a lot of us feel in regards to the inconsistencies in ME2...
I like the game, I really do...but yes, there's a big part of me that can't help but feel that some bits were indeed withheld in order to focus most of the attention on the ME2 squadmates and "new" love interests.
And again I realize that those newer LI's have their fanbases as well...and there are some out there that prefer the new to the old, and that's their right...I like to think that even if I wasn't so interested in keeping Kaidan that I might have felt a bit shortchanged simply due to such limited character interactions in the second game, as so many have already pointed out, you can't hardly speak to anyone for any real amount of time unless your pursuing them romantically and that's well...kinda lame.
I get the impression that maybe the devs would think that hey!! the game isn't all about characters/romance...and that's true that isn't ALL that it's about....but the characters, both the ones that you love and the ones that you hate are what keep you coming back to the story, and what keep you giving a crap about doing everything in your power to make sure your mission to save the galaxy is succesful...I don't know about anyone else, but I'm certainly not going to put much effort into, or rather I won't be "inspired" all that much into saving a world full of people that I don't have much of a connection with...
Bioware has shown that they have the ability to create amazing characters and have them interact with us in ways that touch our hearts and souls, to suddenly well...skimp on that just doesn't seem like them...Yes I'm thinking about Kaidan/Ash/Liara, but I'm also thinking about the new characters like Thane, Miranda, Jacob, Kelly, Legion, Mordin, etc...even the ones that aren't romanceable (which is a small minority and sometimes makes me think Shep should wear a t-shirt that says "I'm commander Shepard and I'll hump anything with a pulse...")...I really enjoyed some of the newer characters and would have welcomed the opportunity to get to know them a little better....but I'm not willing to jump into bed with them to get to that stage and I don't believe that I should have to.
and yes....as has been touched upon many, many times...the way Femshep speaks to Jacob is just disgusting...IMO that is NOT the way a tough, career military lady speaks to a man....even if it's one that she's interested in...I mean crikey, even when she "flirted" with Kaidan in ME1, it NEVER sounded nasty...and it wasn't even suggestive in ALL of their conversations....whenever Femshep speaks to Jacob, I expect her to jump on the table, tear off her clothes and scream "do me"...and that's just not right and IMO, it's downright disrespectful of Femshep as a character, and I'll say it...I think it's kinda disrespectful to women in general...
I don't know...and I am officially rambling now...maybe if more time was spent on fleshing out existing characters, really putting them out there...instead of trying to make things all shiny and new, even those that are all in lust with the new characters would have re-discovered aspects of the old ones and come to like them more....or even cutting down all the potential LI's/bed partners for favor of a couple of really well done, fleshed out, emotionally engaging relationships?....I like Kelly Chambers, I do...but did her little mini-relationship thingie really have to be there?, it just seemed like unneccesary filler and yet another thing that took away from the potential for more involving relationships...
I won't go into the well...ridiculousness of Kaidan/no biotics on Horizon thing again because as I've seen, a lot of you ladies here have discussed it recently with more eloquence than I could come up with...suffice to say, it's a continuity thing to me...I expect people to change over time, but well...cookie cutter scenarios just don't do justice to either Kaidan or Ash as characters...
