I agree. Kaidan is totally a dog person. Gotta love dogs. They can always tell when you're upset, always happy to see you, freely share their favorite toys with you even you really don't want it right now. "But no, master, I insist!"
Honestly I never wanted a cat (they tend to be elitest snobs), but then I saw my little guy in the back of a trailer at the motor pool surviving all alone...well..I couldn't just couldn't let animal control take him and put him down...sooo now I haz lol cat. He was raised by dogs though, so he's confused. And then I found five dollars.
One of my cats thinks the oldest Labrador is his mom. He's actually run to her for protection when she was closer to him than I was. He's a bit confused as well.
I don't actually think Kaidan is a pet person at all.

But I think that Kaidan would not have had the opportunity to be around animals much what with Brain Camp and service in the Alliance.
I do have to wonder, though, what the salarians, asari, turians et al would think of humanity and its symbiotic relationship with the lesser species of Earth. Krogan kept the verran around, so I think they'd get it, but what would the other races think of Labs?
Who would have known that puppies would have been more effective than Kaidan.Doug84 wrote...

I have 10 dogs and 1 cat. The cat was not my idea, but she and I manage to coexist.

what's the story on kaidan's folks? dead, alive? dad's in the alliance, or retired? and his mother?
Dad's retired Alliance. No mention of dead or alive but I'm going to assume alive. Never talks about his mother or whether he has siblings as far as I know.

Interesting question. Its hard to tell because we're unusual in that regard for Earth species - we seem able to bond with and develop symbolic relationships with a vast range of species - other species might have 1 or 2 relationships of that type, but we have them with herd animals, cats, dogs, horses, hamsters, gerbals, dolphins, to name but a few.
I would imagine other intelligent beings would reckonize the value of such relationships, so I imagine we wouldn't be unique in that regard.

- father is alive
- from obsessive conversation with him, you will learn that he is reconciled with his father at some point before Ilos
- his conversation implies that his mother is dead but they never said so
- it sounds like he has a large extended family but no siblings are ever mentioned
- and of course, the cousin who is a farmer. I forget when that comes up, sorry.

Good call; if Kaidan is a spacer kid he probably didn't get the chance to have a pet (at least, a dog) of his own. I could see him getting away with having a cat (they don't usually need as much room as big dogs do, for one), though. Military ships/stations with family quarters probably have a little more flexibility than a warship would - like a military base with family residences. Just speculation.
As for the other races... "Ah yes. "Pets." We have dismissed this claim." Haha of course. I think the Salarians would be confused as to the purpose of such a creature; I'm not sure what the Asari would think. They seem to support Life as a whole and the belief that we are all connected, and might think that having a pet would help humans "embrace eternity" or something?
I've had hamsters (of the non-space variety) a few times in my life, and usually have 2-3 cats. I really, really want a dog though - something big and loyal and loving and playful.

Thanks for the info! I finally have a new fic idea and I wanted it to be somewhat accurate with what we know.

I think it would depend upon their evolution as a species. Would they have wiped out everything but what they needed to survive (ie, nothing left but food animals, no partner animals at all)? Are their home planets nothing but cityscapes? Did they wipe out all the "partner" animals before they pulled themselves into civilization? We left quite a few "competitors" in the extinction pile after all.
Just how ruthless were the other species in their evolutionary phase of their civilization before they realized, hey, wait, that animal over there is kinda cute and it's not a threat? Or would we (and the krogan) be the oddballs?

Ah, but the thing is, its not just a matter of pets, see?
Dogs are really tamer wolves, and helped early humans hunt - and later on where useful in wars, in herding, in guarding. As pets, they've been shown to increase life expectancy, probably cus they help relax their owners.
Horses are good work animals, can be used for rides over long distances, and so forth.
And so on. Symbolic relationships benefited our ancestors greatly - not as much today, but their are still working dogs, horses, and so on.
