Good call; if Kaidan is a spacer kid he probably didn't get the chance to have a pet (at least, a dog) of his own. I could see him getting away with having a cat (they don't usually need as much room as big dogs do, for one), though. Military ships/stations with family quarters probably have a little more flexibility than a warship would - like a military base with family residences. Just speculation.
I got the impression that he grew up on Earth. When he's talking about BaAT the first time, he says "a bunch of guys show up at your house", which implies to me that he must have had planetside roots - ain't no houses on space stations. He also talks about that family owned place in Vancouver and says that his dad retired there before the First Contact War. Kaidan would have only been about seven years old when the First Contact War happened, so I tend to assume he would have been living with his folks in said house up until he was fifteen and Conatix showed up to haul him away. Unless of course his parents were seperated and he lived with his mother somewhere else, but there's no evidence either way on that.
Assuming he was living in a big ol' family place (since it's matured from inland to new beachfront in the time the family has owned it, it's obviously been around a while), I can totally see that there might have been a family dog when he was younger!
I have four cats, all of whom I love to bits. I would also like to have a dog (I'm very keen on akitas, hence why I thought of them earlier!) but me and t'other half both work full days, so we don't really have the lifestyle where we can give a dog proper attention. Maybe one day!

I'm not sure what the Asari would think. They seem to support Life as a whole and the belief that we are all connected, and might think that having a pet would help humans "embrace eternity" or something?
I sincerely hope nobody on this thread is using pet's to embrace eternity!:P
Wait! I didn't - that's not what I mea - Aaaugh my brain! My cat likes to nip my hand if I pet him too much...I really would not want to see his reaction to asari mind melding...

That's why you have more than one dog. They entertain each other.

Ah, but the thing is, its not just a matter of pets, see?
Dogs are really tamer wolves, and helped early humans hunt - and later on where useful in wars, in herding, in guarding. As pets, they've been shown to increase life expectancy, probably cus they help relax their owners.
Horses are good work animals, can be used for rides over long distances, and so forth.
And so on. Symbolic relationships benefited our ancestors greatly - not as much today, but their are still working dogs, horses, and so on.
That's why I called them partner animals, not pets. They helped us a great deal in our evolution. I'm just wondering, if say, asari had horse-like animals, maybe salarians used giant lizards to haul wagons, or turians kept some sort of hunting assistants around. And if they kept them around like we would have.
But no, I still don't think Kaidan would have had a lot of experience with pets.
I would think so, myself.
But no, Kaidan might like dogs, but I doubt he'll have owned one as a kid.

Heh, would have loved to have owned a dog as a kid, but between my dad being in the army and mum working and/or being sick, wasn't really practical.

We've gone through a whole lotta pairs of slippers in my house.
My husband just can't remember to put his slippers in the closet up on a shelf when he's not wearing them, he also never closes the closet door.

Nice. The village here is good for dogs, but its not really something I've thought about doing these days.

Mine are Rhodesian Ridgeback, my older dog was a nightmare of a puppy. We had a retired brood **** for company for him but she didn't play with him enough. My older dog when he was a puppy ate my husbands wallet (was nice enough to toss all the credit cards out of it first), the remote several times, my husband's windbreaker, multiple dog beds and anything else he could drag out othe doggie door including comforters and throw rugs. Our younger dog was an angel of a puppy, we'd already had built up enough positive karma with the first dog.
I used to have to call Verizon for new remotes, I'd get the automated voice system that asks you to describe the problem
me - "dog ate the remote"
Verizion automated system - "you need a new remote"

Yeah, I used to play around lot with the German Shepards - apparently, I even tried to take some poor kid's bike from him with the dog growling at him... I was only 4 too!

Boris is the newer addition, he's a Weimeraner and he's about 9mths old, he wasn't planned, my brother bought him but wasn't really prepared to change his life style so he came to me at 6mths old.

Lol tell me about it, Boris can leap baby gates so I had to buy a special tall one and he escaped his training cage oh and he also chewed through a door! Managed to contain him now in the kitchen when I'm out but hell, he's like Houdini! He's not too bad for chwing things when I'm home and I just make sure there's nothing in his reach when I'm not!
