Yep, it's as low-tech as it sounds (non-techie here; I usually kidnap quarians to do that stuff for me). That's exactly what he did. We waited until night, to get the best contrast, got to a dialogue scene where Shep held still for a moment, took a shot with the best camera we had (his), uploaded it to the Mac, tweaked it, cropped out the extraneous stuff, and voila! Shep pic. I didn't realize at the time you couldn't use actual pictures for your avatars.

If they do, just write down the code, and it SHOULD allow me just to type in the code and get your Shepard in appearance. And if I load up a save game, I can use the editor to adjust paragon/renegade levels... I think
