I was just watching one of the romantic conversations with Jacob on youtube and I really like one thing about it. Jacob asks Shepard whether she has something at heart, and Shepard tells him that it’s been only few weeks for her but two years for everyone, and people changed in that time, and she can’t blame them. It’s like she’s talking about the situation with Kaidan and that it is really hard for her to deal with it. Jacob answers that he can understand those people have changed, because their lost her.
Why couldn’t we have that kind of conversation with him without romancing him?? It would be so nice to have someone care for what you’re going through. I would like Jacob a lot more if he could just ask me that with no strings attached.

Oh definitely, I really got to like Miranda and Jack by watching the romance videos, and if I had never looked those up, I never would have known those characters have extra depth and personality beyond the little that FemShep gets to see.  It's such a shame that we couldn't just be friends with most of these characters beyond a few conversations.  I especially felt frustrated when talking to Garrus, I ended both of my playthroughs with the conversation where you can talk to him about blowing off steam...so because I didn't want to romance him, my good buddy had nothing else to say to me after his loyalty quest.  Not cool.

I was poking around the old Mass Effect community page, while looking for information on how to get ahold of the DLC (played ME for the first time just before ME2 came out), and discovered a profile on Ash, which included an email from Ash to one of her sisters.

For brevity's sake I'll just quote the relevant part:

Let's say your unit is in a tight spot. Some bug-eyed aliens are going to overrun the galaxy. They eat babies, smell bad, and don't have elbows. Nasty. You're told to guard the rear.  To let everyone else escape, someone is ordered "hold this spot until we're gone." Someone has to be left behind. You think it's going to be someone you're sleeping with?

I've served with these guys for eight months now. Yeah, some of them make me feel tingly (and yeah, James was kinda scruffy-cute). I hope I never have to decide who lives and who dies. But if I have to, my decision can't be muddled up by magic-sparkly-hearts-and-stars feelings.

Ouch.  I was still feeling guilty about leaving Ash on Virmire, because however my Shep might rationalize it, everybody knew that she would never have left Kaidan.  Kinda made me rethink her final messages to Shep: "I understand, Commander."  Yeah, she probably did. 

It's a shame that email wasn't included in the actual game.  Would surely have been easy enough to allow you to access her laptop down by the gun cleaning table after she had died, and - for me at least - it would have had a lot of emotional impact.

Going by her "You don't take much shore leave, do you, LT?/I'll walk drag, ma'am" comments, I think she'd have teased Kaidan mercilessly! It would have been great to have gotten more scenes like that.

Yeah, I've seen that, and I really liked that profile...wish they had made one for Kaidan too, but he was *just* the male lead of the game, nobody but women would care, and NOBODY markets to women...

Ahem, bitter jealously aside, I think Ash was a very sensitive soul, and passionate.  She wouldn't have left the man she cared for behind, no matter what cold logic told her.  I think you see a bit of this with the Nirali Bhatia quest...logically, letting the Alliance have the body of the soldier for testing would make the most sense, but she understood the husband's pain who just wanted to lay his wife to rest. 

So she would have understood Shepard's decision, and because of her desire to clear her family's name, she would have been okay with it. 

Of course, if Shepard is romancing Liara, and he/she has been rude to Ash throughout the game, she might have a different view on the situation...
