IMO I was disappointed Garrus had fallen so far when you meet up with him in ME2. I mean my paragon FemShep had worked very hard in ME1 to convince he to do things the right way not the fastest. I think if he really wanted to help people he should have tried to do something besides shoot mercs.
And yes I could see tension between Kaidan and several crew members: Liara, Garrus, Joker, Chakwas, Miranda, Jacob and my FemShep. I just hope BW gives us lots of dialog and lets the squad mates talk with each other.
I was sad to see the path Garrus had taken (even if it was taking out mercs... his mindset was a bit off), but I thought about how hard you had to work on bringing Garrus around in ME1 then thought about how traumatic it must have been for him when Shepard was lost. He was just getting around to setting out in life on a new path Shepard had helped him find, and then he loses that friend in a blink of the eye. I figured it wasn't much of a stretch for him to revert to a comfortable place and start acting outside the law once more. Especially with everyone Shepard had worked for twisting, hiding, or simply throwning away everything she did and stood for.
Personally, I loved the direction Garrus chose to progress in, story-wise. It goes to show that Shepard, as great as she is, can't prevent every single thing from happening, and that all characters have a moment where they are challenged to their limitations. I wanted to see how far Garrus would take his ambition and idealism for the worse, and then see what he is capable of doing to bring himself back on track. Adversity defines character, and ME2 Garrus delievered, IMO. It was a nice touch to rediscover his old self, though, despite being only available in his romance storyline.
