Hmmm. I just had a vodka nightcap, so here's a Parallax preview against my better judgement:blush:

Corporal Toombs stood in the engineering bay, transfixed by a picture of a woman in a frame. She looked young, probably in her mid-twenties, and her dark eyes held a determined fire. The woman wore the Alliance uniform, her hair and makeup done perfectly to regulation. He could tell that she was no-nonesense from the fierce look on her unconventionally beautiful face.

She was dead.

He knew she was; there wouldn't be a picture otherwise. How did she die? Toombs hoped it didn't hurt her too much; his unit was not so fortunate. Thresher acid slowly dissolved armor and flesh. He still remembered the pain and the screams that roared through his head whenever it got too quiet. And the Corporal knew that the VAO would tell him that he had PTSD. Then they'd give him medication that made him number than he already was; perhaps they'd make him talk about what happened.

Toombs tensed up when he heard someone approach.

“They are our best friends; they become closer than anyone we'll ever meet,” Shepard murmured.

He nodded, still staring at the picture.

“Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams, killed in action,” she sighed.

“That's what they tell you to say,” Toombs murmured, “but it's not just 'killed in action'.”

Shepard nodded solemnly, focusing intently on the photo.

“Ash, my only sister,” she mumbled, “sentenced to death because I had to choose who had to live or die.”

“Why?” Toombs asked, his voice taking on a child-like tone.

“There were two teams,” Shepard replied, “Ash was in one, Kaidan in the other. Geth had her team pinned down at her location; Kaidan and a small group were guarding a bomb. The bomb was about to go off; I had to choose.”

“Secure the bomb, save the higher ranking soldier,” the Corporal murmured, “Why did the corporal live while everyone else died?"

Shepard sighed and shook her head, her eyes downcast.

“I don't know why **** happens the way it does,” she said, putting a tentative arm around Toombs' shoulder. “What I do know is that when life gives you another chance, you take it.”

“They're going to give me drugs and then leave me,” he said.

That said, some voice at the back of my head has issues with every pregnancy storyline I've come across.  In my mind, a future co-ed armed forces that schedules long tours of duty full of all the potential hazards possible in deep space would REQUIRE some sort of mandatory contraceptive implant.  That's just me though.

I always thought this too, although like others have said I try not to let it interfere with my enjoyment of stories where Shep does end up pregnant - Your Shepard May Vary™, as they say!

In my own little ME world, I tend towards thinking that the Normandy isn't necessarily a great example of how things might work because it's such a small crew - you're probably running afoul of the fraternization regs looking at anyone else on the ship. On the bigger ships, like the dreadnaughts, the crew could potentially run into the hundreds and having a relationship with someone on board isn't necessarily going to complicate the chain of command. So I would imagine that the Alliance Military would have instituted some sort of policy regarding contraception whilst on a tour of duty, and it would apply across the board.

Certainly for my Shep, I imagine that's one regulation that she would be grateful for the next morning - it's not like it was the first thought on her mind the night before Ilos... Posted Image

Goodmorning, bit of a busy morning so tried playing catch up.

About the OT stuff. I'm fine with it, as long as it turns around to Kaidan/ ME related things in the end. It's understandable that after such a long time, the regulars have discussed pretty much all there's left to discuss since there's little to go on in ME2. But this thread isn't just about those who were here from the start, there are a LOT of lurkers around, occassional posters, new faces and they haven't discussed it all yet.
I'm sure we'll be repeating the same discussions over the coming time and personally I'm fine with it since we'll get new input as well.
That doesn't mean I like seeing page after page of rp Off Topicness that seems to last longer than it used to do, despite me understanding where it's coming from.
However, people should be allowed to speak up if they don't approve without getting snapped at just as people should be allowed to vent and giggle OT as well without receiving the same treatment.

This thread will slow down over time, unless Bioware gives us more to go on through DLC *crosses fingers*. Especially with Awakening and whatnot to draw people's attention away from the yummyness that is Kaidan. It's going to be a long, tough ride to keep our support going but we knew that from the start. The little there is of Kaidan in ME2 is hardly enough to fuel our enthusiasm for the coming years but it will have to do. Luckily we have ME1 even though that's been discussed for over two years now and yet here we are ;)

Anyway I need to get back to work and will leave you with Kaidan :D

@Jho: Very well said. That's pretty much how I feel about the whole OT thing too.

I do want to add that (despite any involvement I had in some of the OT) that I had noticed several people who were barely posting of late, and I missed their contributions.

Kaidan can die like Ashley in ME1, and if u don't import save from ME1, in ME2 Kaidan is dead and u meet only Ashley. I don't think Bioware import Ashley and Kaidan in ME3 as squadmates.

imo you need to create more sekrit pics to drag out the lurkers who has to acknowledge themselves to get it (like me ;x).

I don't mind the OT, as long as it's mixed with disussions about Kaidan. Without it the flow of the thread will slow down since there is only so many new topics you can come up with to discuss. My main reason for posting is just to show support for Kaidan so Bioware give him the role he deserves (imo) in ME3 (strategy similar to the Talimancers).

My biggest fear is that the "sidelining to keeping Kaidan alive for ME3" just means he has a important plot role (him taking the role of Shepard in ME1 and Shepard being in Sarens role which could be a scenario and which some has discussed) and that if you cheated or not only affects how well you will be able to solve the situation with no continuation of the romance at all. I don't want that, I want epic conclussion of the Kaidan romance for Me3! :P

In a non imported game you will only see Ash if you're a male shepard, you will get kaidan if you play a femshep :) Bioware 'saved' the ME1 LI's for ME3 as they stated, hence why they are not going with you on the suicide mission in ME2. We don't know what their role will be in ME3 but they will be there and it sure will be a bigger role than the one they got in ME2, why else would Bioware save them? :)

*tabs out to work again* :innocent:

Edit : and more sekret pics? yes it does bring out the lurkers, but it feels like bribing them in doing so  In a very delicious way ;)

Who you will meet depends on which gender you start out as. A default female will always have Kaidan alive for Me2. One of them will always be alive for Me3 so i think it isn't that difficult to have them as a squad mate only they always fill the same role. With your type of reasoning none of the Me2 squad should be squad mates as all can die.

It really annoyed me to see on other threads people claiming that Ashely surviving was canon since when they started up a new male shep in ME2 Ashely was the one present on the Normandy.   They didn't even bother making fem sheps to test that theory or they would have seen Kaidan as the defult ME1 choice where no ME1 save game was used for a fem shep.

As others have pointed out, Kaidan is still alive for a female Shepard, even in a "default" ME2 game. There is no reason why Ash or Kaidan couldn't be squadmates in ME3, and I'm really hoping it will happen. And as a Tali fan, you really shouldn't throw around the "they could be dead so they shouldn't join your party in the next game" argument...the same could be said about her.

Apologies. I read your post when I had just woken up and I confess that my internetese hadn't mentally booted up.

Like the others said, whoever is saved on Virmire when starting fresh depends on Shepards gender. Males get Ash and females get Kaidan. I've heard that a patch to choose who died and who didn't is in the works... only a rumor.

Kaidan has more likelihood of being in ME3 than all of the ME2 squadmates. He is guaranteed to be alive in about 50% of everyone's games, whereas any combination of dead squadmates is possible from ME2.

Nooooo, that would make me a very sad Shepard if that scenario came to pass.  I have to keep being positive right now, because they said that the ME1 love interests were in a three-act romance, and I'm holding them to that...

Agreed. I am silently praying for my awesome third act of the romance.

I'll say it is hard to be optimistic right now though. The cameo in ME2, and the utter feeling of dread that is haunting me through playing Awakening (for no good cause so far... just me being distrustful after ME2) has left me not so happy.

I really do hope they give us something between ME2 and 3 to keep us going, just a flicker of hope so to speak. While knowing Kaidan will return in ME3, I would love a little extra in ME2. Would adore a holovid mail thing but paying Sbarge to VO that would most likely be too expensive...sadly ;)
