It's fine if he wants to move on but it takes away the specialness of the nickname if he uses it on everyone.

Bah nicknames, they are generic.
He calls all his loves the same name, as it should be.

Maybe he could call Shepard the name of another goddess. Not the same name. While alone a petname may be nice, it's effect is diminished if it was the petname of someone else. You feel like a replacement. Oh, and siha isn't as generic as honey or sweetie, it's an actual name of a goddess.

There's a reason my husband calls me Princess, and it's specific to our history.  There's a reason Thane called his wife Siha specific to their history.  Shepard does not have that history.  AND he calls her that whether she's romancing him or not, thereby cheapening that nickname for his wife.

I'm beginning to think you're trolling, Somebody.

Somebody, it's like Shepard is a replacement for his wife, whom Thane spoke of fondly (not always the best idea). It's kind of like Thane going my wife was the best and perfect, but you'll do, I'll even call you by the same petname. Of course there's more to it than that, but there you have a simple version.

Which makes Shepard second best for both him and Jacob.

Jacob? How him?

Jacob says Miranda needs a better man than him.  Thane is still hung up on his wife.  But yet, they both think Shep is worth a roll in the hay?

I think I'll stick with Garrus or Kaidan.  At least Shep's first in their minds and hearts.

Well Garrus did have that flexibility turian girl.

I tried to have this same conversation with the BF and roommate (both men) and they didn't get it either. Which is just depressing.

Every relationship is different, every couple has their own history, and if they do start calling each other pet names, there's a story behind it.  I had an ex who would write me notes and draw cute bugs on them.  So we started to call each other Cuddlebug.  It was disgustingly cute and probably made people around us want to puke...but it was our little thing.  I would NEVER call my husband that, or even my son, it's just not appropriate.

Thane starts calling Shepard Siha even before the romance is technically started...IMO, it's not really appropriate to call your new platonic friend by the same nickname you used for your dead wife.

That's why I love my husband, he got that.  One of our guy friends didn't, though.  I wanted to smack him upside the head.

I think mine is just being a pigheaded jerk trying to poke fun at me. Which makes me want to smack him upside his head. And then pour a stiff drink and cry.

And I'm going to head to bed since they are grating my nerves in our computer room. Gnite all.

Good night, Sapph and Sia!

My husband is not a nickname kind of guy.  He's more of a stoic alpha male type who has a sensitive side he rarely shows.  He would be a krogan in the Mass Effect universe, or a klingon in the Star Trek universe.

Maybe some would have. The fact that he uses a very personal and unique name that he had with his wife for Shepard is a bit unnerving.

It wouldn't have changed my opinion of him, though, because I wouldn't have attempted his romance regardless. =]

Actually, to be fair to Thane, he says Shepard is a "siha" in the same manner his wife was, but he never indicates he went around calling his wife "siha" as well. So for all we know, it is a personal and unique name to Shepard.

Which doesn't change the fact that Thane can't go around looking like this without threat of dying:

Oh I kid. I love them both.

And just to chime in here, it must have occurred to the writers too, since Shep has the option of ending things after he tells you what "siha" means, by telling him (nicely) that she isn't a replacement for his dead wife. He responds well, but I'm glad she has the option of calling him on it.

@Somebody: Oh, and when you call different lovers by the same supposedly special nickname, it implies that they're a thing, not a person. A PRAAAHHZZEE. That doesn't generally over too well. Just saying.

Yep. It's like "hey, I have an all new Snugglekins, just like the old one".

It's rather cheapening :(

I did try the Thane romance in ME2 but felt so guilty when I went to Sheps cabin & saw Kaidan's photo face down that I deleted the whole game, lol.

Wait, the photo gets turned face down if you cheat on your ME1 love interest?

Oh my gosh, that is awesome!

I imagined it happening a little something like this: Shepard and the new LI are about to do the deed, but before they start smooching, Shepard pads quietly over to the desk and turns over Kaidan's photo.  She doesn't want to feel like he's watching disapprovingly what's about to happen.

It'll turn down if you choose a dialogue option that initiates a romance as well. It's a good indicator if you're a little iffy after you talked to Jacob and want to know if you accidentally went too far.
