Well, it's kinda unprofessional of me to bash other writers, amature or not, on a public forum. ;)  I have Favorited some of the better Sheps on my FF page, though.  I can PM you some blatant examples.

One of the fics I'm having a problem with writing is that in telling Jack off, Meghan lets out too much of her personal history in an emotional diaherrea of the mouth situation.  I haven't been able to decide if it's too much, or not.  I may end up scrapping it or just have her relate it all to Tali or Garrus.

*Nods* I can respect that.

*Goes off to reread Insects and Avians for inspiration* God I loved that fic!

I love Impsy's writing, I desperately want the sequel to Demigod.

While we're on the topic of suggested reading, Michelle and I have mentioned this one before. It's Chem's http://www.fanfictio...1/After_The_End.

It's our favorite piece of fanfic and should be required reading for this forum.

Yes.  Now if only I could transfer my one Dalish from the 360 version to my PC, my obsession would be complete.

On Kaidan... he really is the easiest one to see bouncing a kid off his knee and being a parent of all the LIs.  That just sort of hit me earlier.

I'll let you add whatever they might be saying yourself. =]

****Scene: En Route to Eden Prime. Shepard is walking slowly, but purposefully, towards the cockpit.****

Joker: So, did you meet the new XO? She and the captain were making the rounds yesterday, checkin' on the crew and all.

Kaiden: <blushes> Er...yeah...the XO...

Joker: So, what do you think? She seems... y'know...leaderly like. I guess. I'm not really a people person. What did you think of her?

Kaiden: <stares at screen in front of him. Internal monologue continues:> What did I think? What did I think? That implies that when I met her I was actually able to think. And really, I think every thought went straight out of my head. I remember thinking, she's gorgeous. And amazing. And totally out of my league. And then the captain mentioned her service record - so she's adventurous, too - I always had a weakness for women who liked adventure. And she was charming, and totally not stuck up, though she has to know she's GORGEOUS. Jenkins was just about drooling on her. Heck, I tripped over my tongue trying to talk with her. Didn't help that the captain was right there staring at me like he knew exactly what was going through my head. He probably did, too. He's no dummy. Then this morning, she walked by. She'd zipped herself into one of those hawt jumpsuits that leave NOTHING to the imagination and I really did trip - over Jenkins, who apparently had tripped over his own feet staring at Shepard. Oh, shoot, now I'm even calling her Shepard in my head. That's bad. Next thing you know, I'm going to be saying that out loud and then she'll likely slap me. Or throw me up against the wall. Huh, that sounds nice, actually. I mean, if it was a nice throw. Like, you know, a little shove and... Oh, man, there I go again...

Kaiden: <mutters> So yeah...She seems....Joker? <shakes self, looks around, completely startled to find that Nihilus and Shepard are now standing behind him. Blushes, gulps, bites tongue.>

Joker: ...Drift, just under 1500K. <under breath> Or in the LT's case, he's drifting out of the entire galaxy....

Nihilus: 1500 is good. Your captain will be pleased.

Kaiden: <to self> Act cool, man. Think of something intelligent to say. Come on, man... She's standing right there. This is your chance....

Joker: I hate that guy.

Kaiden: Huh? Hate who? Oh! Right! Ah... Say something relevant, say something relevant... Nihilus gave you a compliment, so you hate him? <Shepard ignores him. Kaiden winces. Face palm.>

Joker: Remember to zip up your jumpsuit...

Kaiden: <staring at Shepard longingly> Jumpsuit....

good morning!:wizard:

Re: Shepards
It's tough to keep a balance of making Shepard human/normal yet keeping that commanderly aura. One rule that I try to keep is that not everyone should know Shepard's exact business, and maybe only one of the crew (the LI) knows the truth. Also, generally speaking, Shepard's personal crap shouldn't be thrown in with the mission. (EG: Shep is  busy checking out ____ or worrying about ___ and almost gets shot)

I've read a few Shepards that treated the Normandy like highschool, and I've also read Shepards that you can't figure out. Sometimes I find myself asking, "But who is this person? Why are they in love? What do they feel about _____?"

Anyway, those are my thoughts.

And those are very valid thoughts. ;)  The only Shepard I can totally enjoy being unprofessional is your Parallax Shepard, Fort.  She's hysterical to the point of parody and I love it.

Meghan kept her boundaries up with the crew, but was a mite less formal with the groud team and even less so with Kaidan.

I like to know about others' Shepards, but really... there are some things Shepard cannot do.

I'm not fond of h.s. fanfic either.  Posted Image   However, people tend to write based upon their own experiences/life focus/level of maturity, so it kinda tells one something about the writer.  When I read fic, I'm looking for stories that expand my understanding/experience of the characters.  One of the challenges of writing romance fanfic is that all too often the focus of the story moves from focusing on the relationship to getting the two characters into bed and writing a hawt scene.   I'm most interested and connected to fics that, while including lovescenes, don't get sidetracked from the relationship.  Hmmm....I notice that the fics I've bookmarked lately and keep reading are ones written by you guys!

Lol. I think the next chapter of Parallax is going to give some people whiplash. She's like the Mrs. Potatohead Shepard... snapping on disguises to suit her mood.

Agreed about some Shepards crossing the lines... like sitting in their quarters all day crying??? I've seen that before.

About 2 years back, I took a creative writing class. One thing the prof told us is that writing is a series of lies. You can lie to people about anything, you just have to make it a convincing lie.  I have fun seeing how much I can get away with in fanfic. Apparently, it's quite a bit

Yeah, relationships fic tend to move in to getting the two characters into bed more than developing the relationship. Which tends to bug the crap out of me.....

Agreed. Too often I have read a fic where they have sex and then there's nothing. I want to know what the couple is like in love; I have to feel that it's going somewhere other than the inevitable 'unplanned baby' or 'and they lived happily ever after' thing. The mind-blowing love scene should be a product of the characters' love or built up emotion.

And the Mass Effect genre of fanfic is a completely different monster than anime-style fics. You've got two successful, career-oriented adults that you're writing about, not a teenaged girl that falls in love with a stoic yet sometimes jerky slightly older might-be teen or young adult. The difference should be stark.

Did I just post twice in a row?

Edit: No I didn't. Some interesting conversation is happening today :wizard:

I consider fanfic practice for the real thing, which I am also writing. The thing about it is, unlike my "professional crap," I get instant feedback on what works and what doesn't in fanfic. So, if I screw up in the characterization of a strong woman/man/elf/dwarf/alien/whatever, I'll know instantly and not get into bad habits later on down the line.
