Even with a renegade Shepard, I don't see why anyone would pick Udina over Anderson, unless its because they know how much cabin fever Anderson will end up with by having a desk job. If Udina is Cauncilman, it could throw a wrench into the plans of Shepard rejoining the Alliance.

Udina has more political experience. I'd imagine he'd be more able to manipulate the council into doing what he desires. I could imagine him as being a tyrant in an all human council, and progressively better if you concentrated on sovereign or saved the council.

He's like the Senator Palpatine of Mass Effect. I can't not have one character siding with him.

Um, because he's been a politician for decades, knows how to work the system, knows how to work with the other councilors, and has proven to be an effective ambassador?  IIRC, the only time he goes against Shepard is pre-Ilos, for which he has completely legitimate reasons – by going along with Shepard, the Council could spark a full-scale war with the Terminus systems on what is very likely red herring (all Shepard has to go by are some hallucinations and a traitor's daughter – not really going to hold up well).

Btw, sorry to any Udina fans! He just rubbed me the wrong way ;P

It also feels wrong to recommend Anderson as Counsellor, since he's a military man, and appears to hate it to a degree in ME3, but Udina totally rubs me the wrong way!

=p Hardly an Udina fan really. I just want Udina to be more visibly effective in ME3, he's that character that many people love to hate (sometimes this is an indication that the character was written well) and could have a lot of potential beyond "the dude who betrays you."

That's pretty much it right there.

I think they've failed so far in making Udina a viable alternative.

Aside from the fact that he's a toad and I hate him, in ME2 if he's the councillor he's just a big jerk to you and that's it. It would've been nice for him to show some political savvy there and maybe, you know, some grudging gratitude for your recommendation.

I see what you're saying. Udina has more way more experience than Anderson.

But at the same time, I don't see that having much of an effect in ME3. Who you chose to lead the Salarians and who you chose to go with the bomb on Virmire in ME1 didn't have an effect, though specialties could have easily come into play.

I see them having Anderson always doing _____, while Udina always does ______, regardless of who you reccomend for the Council.

I think the intent was to deride politicians with Udina.  It worked well since everyone hates him just like most hate politicians.

That's a good point; they break the "show don't tell" with that since all you have to go by is Anderson telling you that he's doing a good job.  Would have been interesting if, for example, the council died with Udina in charge he does a better job of handling the situation than Anderson and humans aren't having quite the same troubles.

Being a leader is different from being a politician.  A politician is solely worried about the political landscape.  A leader, like Anderson, would throw the council and its politics down to the wolves if it meant saving a lot of people.

I just mentioned this in the Ash/Liara?Kaidan group, but I really hope that the interchangeability with Ash and Kaidan disappears. They can get away with it for ME2, but I don't think they can again without some seriously lazy writing. Kaidan has the chance as a character to advance in his military career, develop those leadership skills, become Shepard's XO, a Spectre, etc. I don't see Ash achieving any of this. I see her more as a specialist type of soldier.

I suspect this is too much to expect, but wouldn't it be great . . .

Yea, there's no way the dialogue is becoming interchangeable again. Bioware said they're going to have large roles, I don't think dialogue will be the same in light of that.

The problem with this argument is that he's generally shown in ME2 to not be an effective politician.  If you listen to the news broadcasts he a "diplomatic incident waiting to happen" and none of the other races (or reporters) can stand him.  He won't even bother getting you reinstated as a Spectre, and any impartial logic I can apply suggests it would be good PR, if the Savior of the Citadel™ is still alive, to be able to claim that s/he is still working for the Council and the general good of the galaxy.  *shrugs*

This.  The fact that he can't swallow his dislike of Shepard long enough to get her reinstated as Spectre is a big indicator of his lack of professionalism.  Hell, SHE made him a Councilor!

I hope you're right.

Ashley and Kaidan are foils of each other. They deserve completely different dialogue etc.
