Well, luckily, I tend to socialize with some fairly intelligent people; intelligent enough to understand his humor and the deeper, more subtle elements he puts into the books.
So, I'd say.. Uh, yeah, it's working out quite well. Dibbler wouldn't be pleased, but he wants everything yesterday anyway. I think Havelock would approve though.
The thing about Pratchett is that he's a one-trick pony, which means that if people don't like that particular trick, it doesn't matter how well it's done, even with an author like pterry, who does it better than anyone else.
It's a bit like listening to Meat Loaf/Jim Steinman. You can spot a Steinman song a mile away. My first wife had Celine Dion's "Falling Into You", which has her version of Steinman's "It's All Coming Back To Me" on it. I didn't even have to hear the first 10 seconds of the intro to know it was a Steinman song. Every single one of Steinman's songs sounds the same, which is a good thing if you like the way they sound. Not so good if you don't.
Luckily, I happen to rather like Pratchett's trick. The fact that he does it so well is a bonus.
I know of no other author that can sum up the human condition as creatively, effectively and concisely as Pratchett did with the line ".. where the falling angel meets the rising ape."

Yeah, I guess you could say it is one trick pony stuff, but maybe he just realised that if you find your audience you cater to themRaphael diSanto wrote...

One of the best bits of Discworld advice has to be Mrs Cosmopolite ''Nothing ever gets better from picking at it'', which is true at many levels!

Okay, so in my current playthrough, I had just spent some time getting drunk with Dr. Chakwas. So now I'm wondering about what exactly led Kaidan to do a biotic throw on Jenkins. Did Jenkins keep going "come on, do it, just one throw" over and over until Kaidan did it just to get the kid to shut up? Or did Kaidan do it much less impulsively with "you sure? oookay..." Or did Kaidan do it willingly knowing it would be a laugh?

i've always wondered that myself, actually, as it's not like Kaidan takes his biotics remotely lightly. I lean towards option 2, but I still don't see how Jenkins could've talked him into it.

Yeah, but that seems so uncharacteristic of the reserved and controlled persona Kaidan has going.
Jenkins must have been really annoying.

I think he was. Probably wore poor Kaidan down, and he's too paragon to pull rank in a hardcore way.

I really don't see Kaidan getting worn down and just giving in like that when it comes to his biotics. He's too controlled. I think the phrase Chakwas uses is "Alenko's biotic display" so I like to think Jenkins may have convinced Kaidan to just show Jenkins his biotics. And then Jenkins, being the over excited and eager kid he was, just managed to get in the way somehow.

Maybe it was part of a regular Marine training exercise, like when police officers volunteer to get tased. Jenkins would like being the guinea pig I'm sure, especially if he got to do it in front of the entire marine detachment. And it would make sense for the doctor to be there watching in that situation, just in case something went wrong. Not that it would with Kaidan, but it would probably be SOP for biotics.

Maybe it was a kind of light-hearted sparring session, they are marines after all and they were just keeping their skills sharp. That's how I imagined it anyway

I would have figured him pulling rank before losing his control.
Could have been like the whole Mission/Bastila moment in KOTOR, though.
Jenkins: Hey Kaidan, you ever use your Biotics for fun? Toss someone around just a little bit?
Kaidan: Corporal, being a Biotic is a responsibility you don't take lightly.
Jenkins: Ah come on! There must have been times when you thought about it! Don't be such a tightass!
Kaidan: I am not a tightass! [KAAS: oh yes you do] I've spent years of training to refine and control my biotics to just throw idiots around in a carefree manner!
Jenkins: Idiot? Is that a crack about my combat evaluation because I'll have you know it's simply ridiculous to assume waist-high walls mean there will always be a sneak attack around the corn--
Kaidan: [Biotic Throw]
Jenkins: THAT WAS AWESOME!

What?? When my shep got tanked with Chakwas, she had a long conversation about Joker; there's something about Kaidan too??

I have never gotten the Joker conversation. It's always been about Kaidan and Jenkins. And then toasting to Jenkins, Ashley, and the rest of the Normandy crew that died.

My thoughts:
Jenkins is over eager and when he finds out that Kaidan is a very strong biotic, he develops a case of hero worship for Kaidan. So he follows him around, asking him all about biotics. Poor Kaidan feels a headache coming on, so he visits Chakwas. While he's receiving his meds, Jenkins hounds him about, "Oooo, throw me!!!!". Shepard's insistance that she doesn't care what happens so long as the kid doesn't get hurt doesn't help. Finally Kaidan does it, just to get some peace. Instead, Jenkins jumps up and yells, "That was awesome!!!!11!!!!!!". Kaidan instead gains a starry-eyed fanboy.

You just have to keep picking the options on the left of the wheel that aren't related to a toast until all the options you have left are just the toasts themselves.

It actually cuts to Chakwas in the middle of talking about Alenko and Jenkins when we first see them drinking. "That was awesome!"

You make it sound like Jenkins and Conrad are cut from the same fabric.

Kaidan probably encouraged Conrad to keep hounding Shepard in some subtle attempt at revenge.
