Quite right, you shouldn't auto level Kaiden, he needs a personal touchsapphyreelf wrote...

I killed off Kaiden (Not on purpose he "sacrificed" himself on Virmire.)
But he was useless in my game, low Biotics and low Combat. I saw no point in Sacrificing Ashly.
Only if you don't spec him right in ME1.

This.
Every caracter is awsome if you set there skill's right, and it also helps what class you are, Kaidan is useful for a soldier class biotics and tech, Ash is useful if you need more firepower if your a adept, vanguard ect. Obveoulsy i picked Ash as she is my favourite caracter, but Kaidan is awsome.
Kaidan is a great compliment to a Vanguard actually. Throw him and Wrex or Liara in a team with a Vanguard and the biotics will destroy just about anything.
Ow i know that, that's the great thing about classes like the vangaurd, infiltrator and sentinel, they are classes with two strength's biotic and tech, combat and biotics and tech and combat. I found Ash and Kaidan great with my vangaurd so you can imagine how much Virmire pissed me off lol.

For my Vanguard I always use Kaidan, and Garrus. My second team is Kaidan, and Wrex.
My standard team too whenever I'm a vangurad or adept.

That actually is the exact combination I played on my last run through ME1.

Re: Kaidan's skillz- I found him to be a good addition to any Shepard's team if he was leveled properly. The people that found him useless either didn't level him properly, didn't set the AI to its max settings, or didn't open the power wheel at all when they played.

I wonder at that too, Fortune. Is it even possible to get through the game without using powers?
I think it's pretty difficult. On my very first playthrough of ME I played as a soldier. I used Kaiden and Wrex throughout, didn't have the AI set up properly and didn't use the powers wheel much at all (d'oh on my part!). I died something like 17 times on Therum but far less once I figured it out.

Also, protip: You can tell Kaidan how and when to use his biotics too. So if you know a big fight is about to happen, you can make things happen.
One of my favorite fights in ME1 was taking Liara and Kaidan with me on the final run through Ilos and beyond with my Adept. Keeping Saren under constant Lift was like... a great wind! A great Biotic wind!

I almost died due to starting to giggle like an idiot as Saren floated past me the first time I brought Kaidan along. Then I hummed on that... song which are often played when people float around in outer space, for the rest of the fight. Da di da da, da da, da da...

Maybe Shep's crew got a notice that their delivery was going to be attacked.
Kaidan was wearing his helmet, so it'd be feasible that she wouldn't know who it was immediately.
Edit: Oooo ninjaed
I wouldn't mind being ninja'd by that
