@crimson -night, sweet dreams
@oreolover - I don't think its a girls game, there seem to be plenty of guys on these forums that play it & enjoy it. thats as bad as saying ME is a boys game, lol. I can only go on the reactions of my teen boys in RL. One of my teens played it through once & didn't like it, he said there was too much talking (obviously he's not into rpgs, lol). The other one liked it but he tends to play pretty much everything.

and something totally random : I've been going through a darren Hayes/Savage Garden phase over the last few days and this song (& so many others) seems to talk to me in terms of sort of Shenko/Horizon:

Also, it's ridiculously hard to find good reference shots of Alliance uniforms and crew shirts. Anybody have some I can borrow???
Thanks!

I wouldn't say dialogue = girls game but dunno

You're right Becc dialogue doesn't equate to it being a girls game. Unfortunately some guys aren't happy unless they can shoot things & blow stuff up - makes them feel more manly I guess, lolBECC4 wrote...
@Oreolover, I've never heard DA:O described as a girls game, not even close if anything the splatter and swords and generally dark violent story would suggest to me a boys game. In fact away from these forums I don't know a single girl who plays it.

If liking dialogue is effeminate, I'm flamboyantly homosexual... that's definitely one I've never heard before.
From what I've seen, Kaidan doesn't seem to be very well liked. I'm the only one I know who actually saves him over Ashley on my main file (who is a male). He just seems so much more bitter at the confrontation, that it makes a much better scene.

Personally I don't see DAO as a girls- game. I don't see what could be so "girly" about it, so I would need some type of definition of what girls-game means. Does it mean you can change outfits, romance and talk with your companions? I would feel quite insulted to call it a girls-game since it's typical RPG. RPG's have a long history and have largely been dominated by the male demography, as with most games. What I feel with DAO is that it has started to aim itself towards the female demography in a better way then before (there are RPG's with only a male protagonists). So if DAO is something it's equal.
I would love for more females to get into the RPG genre. It would create more incentives for the gaming companies to design the games around their female demography (well designed female protagonist, well designed romances etcetc). What I would hate would be starting to design the game in a stereotyphic way "omg we need more female gamers, lets include pink dresses, fluffy pets, and you favorite coffee shop".
@Sesheta. Haha I had similiar reaction from my teenage brother. He got bored with ME because they talked too much. He also tried out Fallout3 and couldn't understand how to disarm the bomb and everyone hated him for shooting someone in town, because he didn't bother to read the dialogues :X

My hubby is the same way. I think that's probably what those guys meant by "girl game". It's ridiculous, but at the same time, I think it'd be easier to get a girl into gaming with an rpg, than say, an fps. I don't really know any other female gamers though

I don't get it, myself, since I see games as really just another form of entertainment, like film or music or whatever, but it seems a lot of people stay away from certain games as to not be branded a nerd or whatever. I guess a lot of people are too self conscious for their own good.
Then again, I do live in about the worst possible State, so my experience with this kinda thing is probably worse than it could be.

@instantdeath999 - unfortunately too many shallow minded people hate Kaidan "because he sounds like Carth" who they consider to be whiny so they never gave him a chance. He is actually an awesome squad member but too many people never bothered to level him up properly or talk to him. I'm biased I kow but it actually makes more sense to save him on Virmire (apologies to the Ash fans) because in the scheme of things he is more important to the alliance than Ash.
@taigin - they probably regard it as a girls game because the female warden doesn't run around half naked in ridiculous so called "armour", lol
LMAO - the teens just arrived home & saw my desktop (the fab 3)
eldest teen : Oh my god, you have sunk to the lowest depths of moral depravity
youngest teen : they're all gay you know. they're all standing 1/2 naked with each other

I can see a reason for "killing" either one, honestly... you've already summed up the reasons for saving Kaidan, though he also seems a lot more willing to die than Ashley. Plus, it seems like Ashley has much more family, and Kaidan has those constant headaches.
I still prefer having Ashley die, though, mostly because I think Kaidan is a better character.

I have to say that I hate fps (but thats probably because I suck at shooting, lol), which is what the teens mostly play, although the youngest one will play rpg's. I don't really know any girl gamers except my younger sister but she is more into MMO's like WoW & Aion rather than single player games.mynameisdanza wrote...

For me, the combat really isn't all that important as I tend to play on normal or easy. I just love a good story. Oh and making characters >.>

Historically no, it woulnd't be stereotypical. Games have been dominated by male game developers and a male player base. Even when there have been a female protagonist she's been created to be nice to look at (Lara Croft anyone?). The last couple of years it have started to change though. They are creating stereotypical female games (sims, hang out with your friends in city type of games, groom your pet). Many RPG's have put more effort into appealing more to their female demography. I think both ME and DAo does this in a good way.instantdeath999 wrote...
Would it be stereotypical of me to say that most games are "guy" games by default? Where I live, a girl liking a video game is almost something they think is worth hiding, the way a person might not come right out and say that they are an atheist, that they're gay, or in high school, sadly enough, that they've actually read a book in the last year.

And no I wouldn't agree that Kaidan was more willing to die. Ashley wanted to redeem her familys reputation and a good way would be to die a hero for a good cause.

I'm sure games will eventually become as common as film, or, at least I hope so. Might never quite reach that level, but they are becoming much more universal.
As for the whole Ashley/Kaidan thing, yeah, I can see your point. Both have perfectly good reasons to both live and die, though, so there really isn't a wrong choice.

I usually start off on casual & work my way up, I guess I like rpg's for the character creation and story too rather than the shooting probably why I prefer ME to ME2. Although I have to admit that depending on my mood, sometimes it just feels good to kill things, lol.
My main love for rpgs is the story, I just love a good story. For me it's an interactive book and i love reading. I also like the character creation and rp aspects of the game. When i was younger i explored more morally corrupt characters always being evil or chaotic. I got tired of the "stupid evil" though. Now when i'm older I've found I have a hard time doing evil things and always end up being paragon/good.
