I don't get why people get so upset over this...

It's like when your GF calls you into talk while she's going to the bathroom, sure it's gross and you'll more than likely just walk out; but it won't stop you from hitting that later on.

Why not? It's not exactly a complicated process... 

I believe according to one of the codex entries, they process some waste and store the rest in a suit pocket, which can then be emptied via some sort of port into a standard waste receptacle like a toilet.

Stored and then used as fertilizer on other ships... 

Yeah that's what it was, I remember now.  We'd actually save a lot of money if we used our own waste to fertilize crops.  It's just as good as animal waste, it's just the thought of it that prevents people from doing it.

Not considering all the random junk we eat... 

Couldn't be worse than the number of pesticides and fungicides we grow the crops with, or the amount of additives we put in the food to process it.
