I don't like default male Shepard at all.  The only reason he's iconic is because they plaster him on all the promotional materials (which is odd for a game that prides itself on being a deeply individual experience for each player).

I dislike him as well, mostly jealous, I wanna be all rugged too :(

yeah me too

...wait. :P

In most games, I usually play myself in most of my playthroughs... But Bioware's games are the only ones that I feel the character is actually mine, and not just some guy who makes similar choices. If that makes sense...

Also nice pic, creepily familiar, but nice nonetheless ^_^

Exactly. I couldn't agree more.
Also. On second glance I don't think mine resembles the default Jane Shepard that much at all.

urgh..is it just me or does she not look as iconic as male shepard? or mine? B)

Yeah, I always thought they could've maybe had Shepard always helmeted or something in promo material, so that no one assumes there's the "canon" Shepard. Not a huge issue or anything, but like you said, it's just odd that they'd tie a game that's so individualistic to one specific face.

It's 4:30, but here's draft 4 (Don't worry, you guys never saw draft 1 or 3!). I may consider this one final, but I'm assuming that there's stuff I don't like about it I can't see since it's so late

You guys have it good. I've never been able to play as myself (pretty much) in a game before.  When I realized my Shepard could be a gay female protagonist I had a smile from ear to ear.

Yeah, I'm glad it is coming around.
I can kinda see why though.  Not even a decade ago, conventional wisdom was that the female gamer population was tiny compared to the male market, and the gay female market would be even a smaller slice than that.  It is still true to some extent, and it was even more true then than it is now.  Still, I think Bioware is pretty cutting edge as far as that goes.  Baldur's Gate 2 included female-specific romances --  catering to the female market was not something that happened often then, and that came out a over a decade ago.  DA:O included a gay male romance, I guess ME got the gay female romance.  Hehe

I even made her look sorta like me ...
Oh why the hell not, here ya go, my Shepard:
http://imgur.com/iwdcw....

Nothing out of the ordinary I guess but I think she fits Hale's voice nicely.

She does go with Hale's voice, and she is quite pretty if I may say so.  In a realistic sort of way.
The sort of face I'd expect to see in class, or at the coffee shop.  Attractive but approachable :-)

I see you changed the suit, didn't really mind the other, but this one's just as good. Well done! :D

It's always bothered the hell out of me, it seems to go counter to the philosophy of the game.  A creation of the marketing department, no doubt.  Glad to hear I'm not alone.

Whenever I see/hear him, I'm like "that's not Commander Shepard, you bosh'tets!"

I may be a tomboy, if that translates to no makeup, short hair, and androgynous clothes..but everything I wear is still from the girl's section. I'm really not the butch type; though I do like to make the first move....or all the moves. Whatever. ^_^

I never liked the default male Shepard either.

I made one in ME1 that I kept largely the same in ME2, and I've come to think of him as the real Shepard.

I've been doing a leisurely playthough of ME1 to check out the renegade side of things, and it distresses me to hear all the d-bag things renegade Shep says in "my" Shepard's voice.

Hmm.  If you keep a super-hot moist towel on it for a bit it'll speed the process.

Actually there were games that were released that had a female or gay protagonist. They didn't do well and I believe the dev houses responsible for those games were reorganized. If I remember correctly FFX?? with the female lead had different developers for part 1&2.

I think Bioware is able to introduce those elements because of how persona centric their games are. It's easier to justify having a female protagonist save the world or universe if the storyline derived around that character is as open to personal interpritation and design as the game is.
