In ME it says they use translators. So everyone mostly speaks thier own language. Otherwise I'm sure that the galactic community would come up with some sort of galactic basic language to facilitate trade.

As for earth my bets are on everyone speaking mandrin or japanese in the future.

English is the most widely spoken language in the world today and that, amongst several other reasons, is why I would choose English as the main language. That it also happens to be easier to learn than many other languages is an added benefit. Besides, simplified and/or traditional Chinese would likely be far more difficult for humanity at large to learn compared to English. This is in part thanks to the history of our planet, though there are other more empirical reasons as well; for example, the Chinese alphabet has 100 characters and are symbols whose meaning can change entirely with just the slightest variance in an ink stroke. This makes it far more difficult to learn quickly and become competent in. Sure, I have my own bias but there are good reasons as to why certain languages - Chinese included - should not be the first choice.
