Here it is. It was by Patrick Weekes, one of Bioware's writers.

i can imagine shepard's first christmas with tali onboard being really awkward. first he gets a box of chocolates for his little shotgun-toting engineer buddy, but then garrus mentions that quarians are amino-dextrous, so the chocolate would kill her.

shepard then remembers her love for both tech and shotguns and ponies up for the best shotgun on the market, along with anti-synthetic ammo mods. he drops by wrex to have him check them out, only to have wrex mention that during one of their elevator rides, tali mentioned her pride in her tech and salvage skills, such that she'd rather make weapons than buy them, and would never like a purchased weapon for a present. wrex then adds that that's an awfully big box of chocolates, and wrex would be happy to hang onto both it and the new shotgun while shepard figures out a new gift for tali.

at this point, shepard says "screw it!" and gets her a gift card at omni-gel emporium. just as he's about to sneak it into tali's stocking (one of six hung up over the galaxy map, one of two with the big toe-sleeves, and the only toe-sleeved one that doesn't have "garrus vakarian" stitched on it, with "spectre" stitched under it and then crossed out with "c-sec officer" stitched under that, in turn also crossed out with "galactic bada" stitched at the bottom and clearly not quite finished in time for christmas), shepard hears joker laughing about the system they've just passed, which has survey teams selling planetary rights to barely habitable worlds for cheap. and shepard remembers tali's stories about what happened with the geth, and how her people are homeless, driven from their world.

in the morning, as they all gather in c&c to unwrap presents, tali is confused by the wrapped box that contains nothing but a card... until she realizes how hard it is to wrap a new homeworld.

(liara is, by the way, really touched by shepard's thoughtfulness in getting her that omni-gel gift card.)

I have no worries about that.  She's a crucial character to the plot, and Bioware obviously loves her.

Sometimes it really does seem like the quarian/geth issue is like a parallel plot to the main storyline.

I think it's going to be huge in ME3.  I'm really hoping that my paragon Shepard and Tali can broker some sort of peace agreement between the Flotilla and the Geth.  Massive armies of Geth platforms on the front lines with the Quarian Navy and machinists backing them up?  I want that combo when it's time to take on the Reapers.

I'm certainly looking forward to a big freaking armada composed of the Council races, my rachni allies, and the united geth facing off against the Reapers.

Read your story again: you're a damn good writer.  I'm a writer myself and I really don't like to read because I don't like the way most other people write, but you have a really good style: it pulls you in.  It makes me remember when I got Tali killed the first time...and makes me feel 10 times worse about it, lol.

The good thing about that is there is always the "load" option, but I think the scarier thing is the unknown future.  We really don't know what Bioware is going to do to Tali in ME 3.  They may indeed decide to do something like this and kill her off to make it more "dramatic."  Reading this evokes a fear that Tali may actually die permanently in ME 3, but stirs me to want to protect her.  If anything, I'm really anxious to see how ME 3 plays out!

Thank you, again. I know it's horrible to say this, but my ego does love praise.

No kidding, man. Life needs that same Load button. She really was the only person in my squad that died, which made it SO MUCH WORSE!
My biggest fear is that we won't even get a 'dramatic' death. That, when ME3 rolls around, we won't even see her, but instead we'll get some lame "Oh, she's off fighting Geth right now."
I don't want to her be cast off so easily, but when you look at how many ways she can die in ME2 mixed with how the Kaiden or Ashley was treated in ME2, it makes you wonder if BioWare would put a lot of work into a character that might not have even survived the suicide mission.

I just hope that our massive pressence is making some kind of impact on their judgement, though.

I know, I really wish I had that load button some time.  One time I actually had something like this happen: it was to a stranger, but I could have prevented his death.  My family was in the Philippines having a party for an orphanage and a deaf school, and we rented out a pool.  I'm a good swimmer, so I had been scouting the deep side of the pool to watch out for the kids most of the time.  One point in the day, I swam over to the other side of the pool just to talk to my stepsister, who was 7 and swimming in the shallow end.  In that ten minutes, a 17 year old kid jumped into the deep end and drowned.  Me and my dad pulled him out and tried to perform CPR on him, but he was dead.  If I had changed a fraction of the past, he may have lived.  I guess that's one of the reasons your story really does it for me.

Oh God. I am so sorry to hear that. I hope that you don't blame yourself for that. There was no way you could have known something was going to happen and it sounds like you did everything you could after.
If it was me, I would have done the exact same thing by looking out for the 7 year old more then the 17 year old.
We all have moments of our past we wish we could change. But since we can't I guess the best we can do is learn for the future.
Seriously, I hope that you're not too hard on yourself for this. You did everything you could.

What I mean is: 'if she does not have a SERIOUS pressence in the game'
As in: Keep her as a damn squad-member and Li, BioWare! Don't you DARE do the same to her as you did to Liara! I will pretend that ME 3 never existed if you do, the same way I pretend that there was never a Matrix 2 and 3. Or that the Snuggee dosn't exist.

You're my boycott buddy as of NOW! *sends add*. In all seriousness, though, we're gunna be on Bioware's ass up until launch, and there will be hell the final few weeks, that can be guaranteed.

Nice, never new some of the Bioware guys were Talimancers themselves!  I hope that has some influence in what happens to her in the next game.

Anyone know specs on which writers write for who? Like who writes for Tali in particular? Does 1 writer work on several characters? Basically who of the devs is a Talimancer? :P

I mostly use her and Liara because I like their wide variety of powers (Liara especially is basically cheating), but I like to swap people out on a whim and for mission-specific ability sets.

I've never actually gotten any of the ally achievements.  I hate that they're in the game, and I was glad to see them gone in ME2.  Why the hell would you want to limit someone's gameplay experience like that?

@canneddream.

I read the story in the link in your signature...

There are two key ingrediants to a great captivating story.

First ingrediant is emotion. Its obvious you were feeling emotion about what you were writing about, and it was evident from the first word.

Second key ingrediant is command of the language. There were no mistakes with grammar, structure, style, spelling, or speed of thought. The descriptive words allowed a picture to be put in my mind, and masterfull use of words allowed sounds... even passage of time to go through. You expertly showed a "racing" of the mind as time slowed.

Give yourself a pat on the back, a grammar **** loves your story.

PS: If there were any errors, They escaped my eye, or at least didn't detract from the story.

I urge you, if you write a story... a full blown story, and publish it. Send me a message and I'll buy a friggin copy, you're good.

I do a little bit at times, but I promised myself I wouldn't because that's just the way things happened.  I don't believe in fate per se, but you never know what's going to happen.  Who knows, if I had stayed at the deep end during that ten minutes, my stepsister might have drowned instead.  I'm sure there have been a time or two that I stayed home instead of going to eat out, and avoided a car accident that could have permanently killed or disabled me.  You have no way of knowing, so I think it's just best to live life and not think about it.  Really tore up my dad though.  He'll still bring it up from time to time and say "what if we did this instead...."  This was like 6 months before the new CPR protocol came out for 30 chest compressions to 2 breaths; the old protocol we used was 15:2.  He'll be like "I wonder if we would have done it the 'right way' (i.e. 30 compressions) would he have lived?"  He was totaly full of water though in stomach and lungs, so i'm pretty confident there was no chance to bring him back.  In reality, CPR only works for like 15 or 20% of people.

she is the best company ever :)
also on me2 as well the moment she was available

so no one did this except me????

For the first playthrough I did, actually, but not in the subsequent ones because I was trying to get all the ally acheivements.  Of course, after I got them it was back to Tali

I went through ME1 with Garrus and Wrex, doing every side mission possible. Never switching out, yet I got no ally achievement.

I'm hopelessly obsessive like that. Tali hasn't left my squad in any playthrough after recruitment. Same in ME1, got Quarian Ally and Garrus Achievement first ;)
