Maybe, by the year 3000, we might have the means to explore outside our solar system using actual human piloted vessels. Unless we have an amazing discovery or an other race actually meets and helps us then it will take a while before we are able to do any significant space exploration.

My whole problem with other sentient life in the galaxy is that earth has been around for what? 14 billion years? (going off memory, correct me if I'm wrong.) There has been sentient life on here for what? 10-50k years? That's a pretty ugly percentage. The other variable is how long we last. We just aren't going to last 300 million years like the dinosaurs. Something like nuclear war or a situation like on Thane's planet will stop us well short of even a hundred thousand IMO.

It seems a lot more likely that we could find another planet that could be home to sentient life, but either won't for another billion years, or did 5 billion years ago, and they've been extinct for longer than we can imagine.

The counter to that is that there is an unfathomable amount of crap in the universe. No matter how close to zero the probability of humanity's situation being duplicated, there are enough possible locations for it to happen. Forced to bet though, I would say nothing else in the galaxy, most likely something somewhere else in the universe. Not like I have any way to prove it though.

The whole Mass Effect 15 or so sentient races springing up in 50k years seems like total crap when I think about it though.

So, 300 years ago most people were born, lived and died within a few square miles. Today you can be anywhere in the world within 24 hours and we find it mundane. Possibly 300 years from now people will be living on Mars and thinking, I wish I could go _______. Living on the Mars would be mundane, just another day. No matter when a person is born we (as a species) always look to the next river, forest, island, mountain, ocean, planet, galaxy. We are destined to be among the stars. So maybe your great-great-great-great grandchildren will finally meet Tali. Lucky bast**d.

We could find an alien race that was in some way similar to the Quarians in the Mass Effect universe. How cool would that be!?

lol, that's pretty much what I said on the last page. If we find evidence of life out there will probably be ruins, or they will find our ruins.
