My whole problem with other sentient life in the galaxy is that earth has been around for what? 14 billion years? (going off memory, correct me if I'm wrong.) There has been sentient life on here for what? 10-50k years? That's a pretty ugly percentage. The other variable is how long we last. We just aren't going to last 300 million years like the dinosaurs. Something like nuclear war or a situation like on Thane's planet will stop us well short of even a hundred thousand IMO.
It seems a lot more likely that we could find another planet that could be home to sentient life, but either won't for another billion years, or did 5 billion years ago, and they've been extinct for longer than we can imagine.
The counter to that is that there is an unfathomable amount of crap in the universe. No matter how close to zero the probability of humanity's situation being duplicated, there are enough possible locations for it to happen. Forced to bet though, I would say nothing else in the galaxy, most likely something somewhere else in the universe. Not like I have any way to prove it though.
The whole Mass Effect 15 or so sentient races springing up in 50k years seems like total crap when I think about it though.
lol, that's pretty much what I said on the last page. If we find evidence of life out there will probably be ruins, or they will find our ruins.
better than nothing
