Normally when Bioware puts in the romance options they have to record at least 2 different dialogue trees. One involving the romance and the other just friendly (for those who chose a different option or have a female Shepard).

What is this "friendly toward female Shepard" that you speak of? More like romance dialogue with an abrupt ending. amirite?

Agreed. It's so easy to become emotionally attached to the characters because of their wonderful writers and voice actors.
Hence why I'm always on edge every time I play the sucicide mission. I know what to do, but I still can't stand to see anyone on my team die. (Well, except for one or two, who I shall not name so I don't insult anyone) 
Seriously if Tali's character didn't have that amazing quality of writing and acting, then I wouldn't have felt so bad when she was killed.
But she did.
And I felt like crap.
For two days.

I wish I could congratulate them. It seems to me that most characters are pretty well loved, so they did a really good job at making them interesting for players. Tali's fanbase was already pretty strong (but it did become a lot stronger since ME2 ofcourse).
