I'm with the husk, been playing ME2 on Insane while posting all night, time for it to get my full attention. Shall try to be around for the 1400th page though.

Don't take this the wrong way, but that's a terrible reason to be single! A girlfriend who's fine with you being yourself, letting you do whatever you want? Golden opportunity, mate, golden opportunity;) guys are missing out

Grunt, Zaeed and to a lesser extent Jacob and Garrus give you bonus points for holding the line while you fight the Big Bad so its best to leave them behind in the last segment.

Also Jack, Mordin, Tali, and Legion are the most fragile so you'll want to take 2 of them with you for the final segment and send one of them (loyal) to escort the crew for the best chances of everyone surviving.

First playthrough I sent Grunt to escort the crew, then I took Garrus
and Tali to the final mission and the line held. Everyone survived.
When I heard you could send anyone to escort I was like "waat how did I
not screw that up".

The way I've always done it, and it seems to work fine is:

I usually keep Tali and Zaheed or Thane with me, send Grunt back with the survivors and that seems to work just fine.

The way the hold the line segment works via a simple math equation. Each squad member has a value based on thier "soildieryness". And there are threshold values that determine how many people die. The highest threshold no one dies.

Loyal Squad members have a bonus givin to thier base value.

Grunt and Zaeed have the highest base value and are the best to leave behind.

Tali, Mordin, Jack, and Legion have the lowest base values and are best to either escort your crew or take with you to the final boss.

Having said that having a large amount of loyal squadmates holding the line can negate this effect (through thier combined bonuses) but if not then this is you best bet for survivability.
