I doubt that one act would really sabotage the war effort. If the quarians really mean to take back their homeworld, then they'll do it; tech or not.

Well, that's the thing... what the Quarians intend to do about their homeworld is really up in the air, and this could be a major influence for it.  My impression was that exposing the information would reveal exactly how dangerous it is to even look for a way to fight the Geth, as well as turn the general consensus against the people championing the war.

Tali and Shepard sharing the captain's room was kinda the idea for this. I imagine Tali wouldn't assume she could just move in with him until he offered.
